The Nintendo 64 was my first console. I bought it with my hard-earned money. Taking off the rose-tinted glasses of nostalgia, it wasn't a perfect system. However, while the PS1 had an amazing library of almost every conceivable genre, what I believe the N64 excelled in was its colorful adventure platformers with great characters, as well as its great party games and multiplayer.

Gladly, in the 32/64 bit era I was old enough to have a sense of quality, I was not a child with bug in the nose that today hates/love that systems because of some blurry rememberance of that era. I used to be well informed (well, as good as we could be in that era, through magazines and the first websites about gaming news). So, I was more concerned about the innovation aspect of the consoles and triple A production values. While I was concerned about gameplay, kids were amazed by CG's and FMVs. While I could play innovative games, even if the game was colorful, kids were amazed by bad games with a "suposed" more adult thematics. Of course, I choosed the n64 over the ps1 (still, in the end of that era I bought a cheap used Ps1). The games on n64 were, in general, more revolutionary than the ps1 games that never really could decide if wanted to step in the 3d revolution or stay in the old confort zone of the 16bit era. By default, n64 had the analog stick, the four controller port. Sony started the gen with a d-pad to play 3d games: they totally failed to understand the true potential of the 3d games. In result, we have a lot of clunky games on the ps1. We have the absolutely lack of multiplayer games. We had comercial success games like Tomb Raider, Metal Gear, Crash, Resident Evil, that played like shit when compared to games of the like of Zelda, Mario 64. The "innovation" that ps1 and Saturn had, the cd, helped both to stay stuck in the past with more possibilities for 2d games (that worked only for a handful of games like Castlevania Symphony of the Night and Capcom vs series, that I have to say, looked and played very bad on ps1, the Saturn versions were great) and to have the damned, outrageous long and boring loading times. So, one console brought the real 3d revolution with real 3d gameplay and better, smoother and elegant graphics. The others, a half baked, wannabe 3d games with tons of loading times. In that scenario, I couldn't care less about library size: It was more valuable to have a handful of revolutionary top notch games in my hands than thousands of half baked games mixed with lots of shovelware on my shelve, peppered with infinity loading times. My long hours and hours of multiplayer matches with 3 or more friends on n64 games and occasionaly some great revolutionary single player experiences (like in Zelda Ocarina and Majoras Mask), make me glad to have choosen wisely and not with a child point of view (the more the better, yay!). I must remember people that ps1 and saturn, occasionally, had some really revolutionary games, and even some bad in gameplay term games like Metal Gear, helped to bring some good things for future games (like cinematic style), and anyway, I played a lot of ps1 games like everyone (even if it constantly failed to wowed me like the n64 best games). I'm not an ignorant about ps1 library, you can say any of the most beloved games of the console and I assure you that I played a lot of these games. But I don't have the nostalgic glasses to fool me about what set new rules and higher standards to the industry and what not (and no, to have dozen of follow ups don't make an IP revolutionary or a game changer, like Tomb Raider or Final Fantasy for example).

This is my favorite console of all time. Before it, I owned the SNES and Sega Genesis, in that order. I credit this console with turning me into a gamer because, to me, it blew the two major 16 bit consoles out of the water. With childhood favorites like Super Mario 64, Ocarina of Time/Majora's Mask, Star Fox 64, Banjo Kazooie, Mario Kart 64, Goldeneye and Rogue Squadron, you couldn't beat these games with quality at the time. The games may look rough nowadays, but one can't overlook the way this console paved for future 3d games. Thanks for covering this guys. This N64 fanboy appreciates it and all the content you guys put out.

I'm a bit conflicted about the N64. It was one of my favorite consoles as a child because it gave me some of my fondest gaming memories (OOT remains the greatest game ever made). On the other hand, after revisiting the console as an adult, I've discovered that its library really is startlingly sparse with probably the least strength in depth of any major Nintendo system. Overall, I'd say it's definitely my least favorite of the major 5th generation console (PS1 and Saturn both have bigger and better libraries), but would still probably make it into my top 10 favorite consoles ever. It has relatively few good games, but those it does have are extremely good indeed. You simply can't argue with the quality and influence of Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Mario 64 and the like.

Same goes for Perfect Dark, it was widely popular despite 007, which says a lot for the game's success.

I liked this episode on the basis that it shows a lot of games that I don´t know. I don´t mind if game sack may not have the same opinions and memories that I had. I just try to enjoy all of these older consoles and discovering old games. The only sad part is some of these older games can get very expensive, the retro video game hobby is becoming more and more popular.

What? I've played everything was kind of video game, PlayStation 1,2,3 to the 4, Xbox 360, 380, the line of SEGA, Super Nintendo, everything ... and I never saw and enjoyed a vídeo game as perfect as the Nintendo 64, for me the best video game ever developed of all time ... his matches were marked by generations ... Nintendo 64 is forever ...

I really wish these guys had made some mention of the wrestling games that graced the system. Whether you enjoyed the WWF or WCW titles, they were all a ton of fun to play with friends. Despite its shortcomings, the Nintendo 64 is one of the best collectable consoles around thanks to the games being cartridge-based. If you can overlook its faulty controller and fuzzy graphics there is a library of titles that really make this system a must-own.

Not a bad selection but I would have add Ogre Battle 64, Doom 64, Goemon/Mystical Ninja games, Rayman 2, Wipeout 64, Star Wars Racer, Resident Evil 2, World Driver Championship, ISS 98, Rocket Robot on wheel and 007 World is not enough. Also Top Gear Rally is a great racing game but it needs time to warm up (almost as good as Sega Rally on Saturn IMO).

Yeah people are pretty sensitive when it comes to differing opinions on their favorite games. Dave is a HUGE Kirby fan and for him to call it the weakest in the series says a lot. But no, he said something bad about a 1st party N64 game! Bring out the pitchforks! I'm not referring to you or your comment, by the way... just an example.

Game Sack I just find that funny...I'm a huge Kirby fan as well, grew up on it since my mom wouldn't buy me gory games or anything violent (I'm a chick so it had to be suitable for a little girl to play), so what better game then an adorable pink ball? Anyways...my favorite Kirby game to this day is Crystal Shards on the N64. It's fun and addictive, yes it's a bit slow but I like slow games..let's me enjoy and relax a bit. And that combining powers thing was pretty kick ass...I had some fav combos back in the day. But to each his or her own. There are so many games out there and every gamer is different, so if you say you dislike something, you'll piss on a few peoples parade. For instance, I hate every Final Fantasy game and most RPG's. Do you know how much hate I've gotten because of that? Enough to keep the fires of hell stoked till the end of time.

LadyAllegra55 I find it hilarious that your mom bought you Kirby because of how "non-violent" it was, considering the final boss is an angelic bleeding eyeball monster made of hate. God do I love that trend in the Kirby series. Also, I wish there were more new platformer IPs these days. Even the most derivitive of them back then were leaps and bounds more creative than the current wave of "KILL ALL FOREIGNERS" modern millitary FPSes.

My biggest disappointment with N64 was no Metroid. I was a huge Metroid fan and they never did release a game. One of the creators of Metroid passed away I believe. Mario 64, Zelda Ocarina of Time, Killer Instinct Gold, Golden Eye and Mario Kart 64 is about all I owned and like for the system. Turok I and II also but, those games made me nauseous after about an hour.

I really enjoyed the review but felt like all the in depth reviews focused too much on the racing games whereas some of the bigger titles for the system such as Conker's Bad Fur Day, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Star Fox 64, Smash Bros, Paper Mario etc etc should've had more time taken into account talking about them . Especially for varieties sake. Still another top notch review regardless guys :D

They picked a great list of games that really highlights the N64's strengths. It did racing games really well, and while they picked some games they didn't like they made sure to clarify that was their opinion. On the Zelda titles it may just depend on which console you started on, my first Nintendo home console was the N64, and I refer the N64 Zelda titles to Link to the Past. That being said I have yet to play a Zelda game I didn't really enjoy and I've played just about all of them except for a few handheld titles.

Majora's Mask is the best Zelda ever made. The best part about it is the cast of characters, side quests and the 3 day mechanic which allows you to do everything over again and again adding to the replay value.

Funny that Gust used time mechanics in theyr Atelier games on PS3 as well (Atelier Rorona, Totori, Meruru, Ayesha and Esha&Lodgy), excelent games by the way (with exception of Atelier Totori), and in my opinion miles more interesting and beautiful than Majora's Mask. Seriously, if Majora's Mask was the best Zelda ever, I would have serious concern about future of the series. But I like Skyward Sword the best, so I am clearly wrong on that.

The benefit of it being on a 3-day system was that it was able to give citizens actual schedules since they only had to worry about giving them 3 days worth of stuff to do. It really made the game feel alive for its time, you just didn't see things like that and you still largely don't even today. Sure, there are much bigger games today but how many of them have citizens with deliberate tasks in their daily lives that it feels like they're actual people instead of just NPC's?

I don't think you know what you're asking for. Trilinear filtering (which causes the blurryness) reduces aliasing when textures are minified (yes, it really is called that). You seem to want nearest filtering (sharp, lots of aliasing/texture shimmer). Anti-aliasing is a technique to reduce the stair-stepping effect on edges, that's also probably not what you're talking about. If you want to see the game look like Quake in software mode, basically, then you're shit out of luck even on emulators. In order to accomplish the expensive trilinear filtering, they had to sacrifice texture resolution to fit into on-chip caches; otherwise you're doing 8 texture reads from RAM and it would take 8 times more time to render. If you're reading 8 times from cache it's almost free, but the cache is only 64x32 pixels (trilinear) or 64x64 pixels (bilinear). That's also why the only art style that looks OK on N64 is cartoony, almost flat shaded graphics that hides the attrocious texture resolution.
