To Celebrate the GameCube's 20th birthday, let's take a look at the history of the GameCube, how it came to be, why it didn't succeed as much as other Nintendo consoles, and what it might have led to.
Following the release of the Nintendo 64 in 1996, technology not only continued to innovate and grow more complex, but it did so at a rapid rate. By 1998 Sega had released the first of the 6th Generation of home consoles, that being the Dreamcast. A technical powerhouse blowing the PlayStation, Saturn, and even the Nintendo 64 out of the water, the Dreamcast was hailed as the future of not only 3D Graphics but home console gaming as a whole. Not long after, in March of 1999 Sony unveiled the PlayStation 2, which was by far superior to the Dreamcast in just about every aspect. Finally, by May of 1999 Nintendo would announce they were indeed working on a successor to the Nintendo 64.

While I did grow up with the N64, I feel like GameCube is my true childhood console because it’s where I have the most memories. Playing Mario Kart double dash with my cousins, waking up one Christmas morning to Sonic Adventure 2 Battle in my stocking. I still remember going to WalMart with my grandparents and them buying me a GameCube with Mario Sunshine. Powerful stuff. Still to this day I’m emulating GameCube games and playing them, currently playing Star Fox Adventures on dolphin on my steam deck. GameCube will always be one of Nintendos best consoles

I feel that. I was a GameCube guy, always jealous of how successful the PS2 was when I was younger lol. Still saddened it wasn't as successful since it's probably my favorite console, but hey, it's what happens. Much love for the PS2 though, some really great games on that system.

When I was in jr high, my school held an assembly celebrating student accomplishments with prizes. I knew one of the prizes that day was a GameCube, and given that my PS2 had bit the dust, I really wanted the GameCube. I ended up winning it that day, along with copies of Luigi’s mansion and Star Fox adventures, and fell in love with the system. Sure it wasn’t my ps2, but I could play games again. Looking back now, the system still holds a special place in my heart.

The gamecube DID have better graphics, I had ps2 until about 2011 and I can admit as much, nothing on ps2 could touch Rogue Squadron. Honestly, if it had come with a dvd drive, I would have chosen it over the ps2.

I grew up on team Playstation, but the GameCube has always been a favorite of mine. I didn't know until years later that the GameCube didn't really do all that well. It's a shame, because I consider the GC era a golden age of Nintendo first-party games.

It's kind of nice to see how relatively powerful the GameCube was, when compared with its contemporaries, not only because it was my console of choice for that generation, following the death of the Dreamcast, but also because I personally noticed that the system's graphics often looked better than competing titles/ports of the same game. It wasn't even like a "my choice is inherently better" console wars kind of perspective. It's just something I naturally noticed from having experienced all three systems from hanging out with different friends.

I think it easily passes every other video game console I’ve ever had… which is strange since I’m an adult now (I technically was when the GC came out but entering college isn’t exactly “adult” adult). My favorite video game console ever, it brought a lot of great times for me when I was 8 to 10 years old! I played so much Star Fox Adventures, Super Mario Sunshine, Mario Kart: Double Dash, Sonic Heroes, Wario World, Super Smash Bros Melee, Kirby Air Ride, Custom Robo and Pokemon Colosseum! My biggest regret from my childhood though was getting rid of my Gamecube for a Playstation 2, I only did that because I was desperate to play Grand Theft Auto. But, I missed Mario so much. Thankfully though, I got a Wii in 2006 and I was able to play those games again ASAP. Backwards compatibility is a blessing sometimes.

It's always is kind of a shocker to me personally to hear and see how badly the GameCube sold. Literally everyone I knew at the time had one or one plus an Xbox, and myself and like four other kids were the odd men out with our PS1's and PS2's. Because of that everyone was always wanting to trade consoles for the week or the weekend so I got to play a lot of GameCube and Xbox and got to appreciate that entire generation save the Dreamcast.

Really good run-through! I understood the Rare buyout slightly differently though, I thought they tried to sell to Nintendo but were turned down. On the GC vs Playstation et al, Sony blew the market open. They sold to non-gamers. I'd wager a good proportion of their sales were to people looking for a cheap DVD player and got the option to play games along with it. Wife asks what they've bought, they can say it plays movies. There was still stigma at the time around playing video games. Nintendo could never have made that play. Sony was a known "adult" brand. Nintendo made toys for kids. It wouldn't have worked. The best they could have hoped for out of that generation was a console that sold well to existing gamers. Which they kind of achieved. That generation was also the real beginning of games taking years and years to make though. It's easy to forget that only 5-10 years earlier, games were being made by developers in the single digits in months. Not hundreds of developers over years. It caught Nintendo cold, especially without Rare and with weak 3rd party relationships to plug the gaps. There were massive amd frequent game droughts. You could own the GC and another console as a gamer. It was difficult to sustain your time with the GC alone. With better 3rd and 2nd party support, the GC would have sold closer to 40-50 million units, no doubt. It wouldnt have dented the PS2 numbers much, again because they were playing in a different market, but it would have meant the GC was a very successful video game machine. As it was, it just ended up as a brilliant console with a handful of the best games of all time, a whole host of missed potential, and my favourite of all time.

The Gamecube was my first home console and my intro to Nintendo and gaming (along with my Gameboy Advance( at the age of 7. I loved the edgy early 2000s aesthetic it had. The purple cube was so fucking cool to me, with it's dark and shiny menu. Melee, Kirby Air Ride and Mario Kart DD had a similar aesthetic and I miss that chill vibe so much. Times were simpler and I don't just say that from nostalgia. I love the Switch but the Gamecube was the last true home console just made for games in in a sense, that is missed. So many memories. :') Love you forever, little purple lunchbox!

Having been burned by SEGA years earlier, I never bought anything from the Saturn on. However, the Dreamcast painted a prettier picture, and the NEC PowerVR did some things in hardware that the PS2 couldn't do at all until years later. I had a PS2, but it became obvious that the "75 million polygons/sec" was never going to happen, and no game ever even exceeded 7 million. In hindsight, the Dreamcast (averaging 3-5 million and better rendering) was the better system. The PS2 won because of false advertising and being the cheapest DVD player that most people could buy at the time.

@JSmokesII There's the cheap DVD player aspect of the PlayStation 2 in the homes that didn't even have a PS1. Remember that 106 million PS1s had over 8,000 games for it. Imagine if SEGA had simply released a slightly upgraded version of the Saturn but with a built in DVD player for $399 in 1998. SEGA would've sold at least 50 million Satutn DVD players, and those people would them say, "Hey, I just realized that you can play games with this console. Aren't I so smart!"

@@VideoGameDocs I think a Gamecube Mini would easily outsell a PS2 Mini for the following reasons: - Being able to play DVD's would no longer be a factor - The best PS2 games are mostly third party which would be expensive to license for Sony - These mini consoles only hold a limited number of games, so the PS2's much bigger library would be a non-factor - Nintendo's games have aged much better than any other game from that generation. Just imagine how many people would buy it to play SSBM in HD and maybe even added online play.

@@VideoGameDocs Nintendo didn't have their own semi conductor factories like Sony did at that time. So it would've been more expensive for Nintendo(much like how it was with Microsoft as they were losing over $220 off of each Xbox console sold at that time; hence why they lost over $7-billion that generation) because of expensive royalties off of each disc drive sold within each said system sold. So if DVD was the future, it was the future only for Sony as they had more resources than Nintendo did at that time.

There is no argument, it is the truth. It all goes under the Miyamoto motto "INNOVATE OR DIE." It does suck that Nintendo doesn't compete with the other guys… as the Wii was noticeably weaker than the competition… in a way where it was incredibly obvious when you looked at the Wii's games compared to its competition. But I disagree that this was their "last good console." I'd argue that this doesn't really matter as much anymore. We're at the point where each new jump in graphical power with each generation has given us diminishing returns. If the rumors are true that the Switch 2 will have PS4-esque visuals… I doubt most would notice the difference between the Switch 2 and the other current-gen consoles. Especially with things like DLSS among other things…

The GameCube was a great console. While the mini-disk format was terrible, I believe the systems only significant weakness was both Sony and Microsoft being absolute titans. There are only so many customers at any given moment who are both able and willing to buy, and these customers were almost exclusively adults due to children not having paying jobs, so adult oriented consoles and games like Halo or Metal Gear were more attractive.

I don't understand their stubbornness in using cartridges and mini-discs and their indifference to developers' concerns regarding programming woes. Their quest to deter piracy has gone way overboard and they are only hurting themselves. Its the same with Sony requiring the use of their proprietary memory cards for their handhelds which cost them dearly.
@desamster
@desamster 9 күн бұрын
CD-rom technology was still new and reading speeds very slow mid 90's. But the cost, lack of storage capacity and perceived backwardsness of cartridges hurt Nintendo bad. Mini-discs again had faster data access than dvds, but retained respectable storage capacity and low manufacturing costs. The philosophy of design was a dedicated video game console rather than a multimedia device. Gamecube was probably their best piece of hardware ever; powerful, efficient, compact and cheap. Not including a cd rom or dvd drive was also a way of keeping hardware cost down and not having to pay royalties to Sony. And also yes their draconian anti piracy stance comes into play. Ubiquitous piracy on the original PlayStation really boosted the systems popularity and helped Sony in the long run. Just to say there were pros and cons and the choice wasn't as straightforward, but Nintendo is quite the stubborn company that does its own thing. They were arrogant with the N64 coming off a dominant market position, but they weren't indifferent to developer woes transitioning to Gamecube. 3D gaming technology was still rudimentary with the N64. Nintendo was focused making a powerful system, which ultimately turned out to be bottlenecked and difficult to develop for. They addressed these issues with the Gamcube and result you had very good looking third party games on the system. Kinda sad it didn't do very well, because after we got gimmicky, underpowered systems from Nintendo.

WRT Part 5, most of Sony's divisions are doing poorly except for PS, financial service and imaging. The revenue comparison belies their dim net profit contribution. So they are effectively at Nintendo's level.

As someone who waited in from of CompUSA when I was like 12 from 4 am to get a console I was definitely disappointed with the launch titles, I bought Super Monkey Ball (loved it), Luigi's Mansion (hated it) and a 59 block memory card which costs as much as a game. TBH that pissed me off more as the memory card costs me Melee until wayyy later. I liked how Xbox had a HD

I was all in on Xbox at the time, and i think i got ahold of a PS2 at some point shortly after, but i didnt play a GC til years later, almost ten iirc, and Zelda TP was a blast, but there just werent enough games I cared about at first that werent on other consoles, especially my OG Xbox, where it played better anyway with a HDD etc. That said, it pushed Nintendo to do the Wii, which was successful and got my attention, but it went the way of casual games i didnt care much about, and going back to Zelda with motion controls is a nightmare to me now lol. But it made all the money at least

The only Nintendo system I considered a turd was the Wii. GameCube was the lamest system for 3rd party because of the controller, the triggers sucked for racers, and the little yellow stick sucked for FPS. The 1st and 2nd party offerings were great though, and it transitioned beautifully with 480p. I don’t ever remember thinking of it as an inferior system in high school even though I had a ps2. I was playing prime and sunshine on it and having a blast.
