I got the Retro-bit clear blue 6 button MD/Genesis pad back when the Mini launched, as I was really annoyed that Sega decided to shaft us all in the West (I'm in the UK) with the 3-button one, and now Nintendo/Sega have done the same thing again! Don't they remember we had the 6-button release outside of Japan too!?! As I recall for here in the UK it launched with the Mega drive 2 console, as that was where I first had mine. And doesn't it cost them more money to produce both versions of the pad? They should just sell the 6-button world-wide and stop this them & us crap. I'll be sticking with the Retro-bit pad for the foreseeable.

There's already multiple Genesis collections and the Genesis Mini with all these games. What was Nintendo thinking? Game Boy and GBC would have been better.

really, who cares about the icon? If you connect the Retro bit SEGA 6 button controller you also do not get it. What matters is the built quality of the controller, the battery life, the connection range, the compatibility to MD games on Switch. 50 USD is way too much and it is perfectly in line with the ridiculous asking price of the expansion pack.

Here's something you may not know protip: whenever batteries are shipped they have to be drained to 50% or lower to avoid any incendiary action causing the battery to flame out from the air pressure around during transportation. Any lithium ion batteries should be drained but not any lower than 3.7 volts which is the minimal voltage.

@@Aerodeth usually they have to be shipped ground & contain the battery label on the box as well as flammable. Not everyone follows protocols but it's definitely helpful so those boxes won't get crushed & cause fires. Same reasons why they don't like transporting batteries via air

Provide citation. I'm 100% certain that you're wrong. You may be referring to the rule a few years ago where CELLS and individual battery packs, not batteries already installed into products, are required to be at a 30% state of charge (or less). The simple fact is that the batteries will last the longest (least degradation) on the shelf at low Voltage. Most would simply charge to 50% SoC, around 3.7V, and leave them be. The battery may be nearly drained by the time you receive the product, but the protection circuitry should prevent any low-Voltage damage concerns by the general public.

According to 'market research' Western audiences were more familiar with the 3 button design and consider it iconic. It's not the first time is the thing, and might even be a Sega mandate - The Mega-Drive/Genesis Mini also only came with 3 button controllers in the West, whilst Japan got 6 button ones. Nintendo had nothing to do that.

I'm sure the license added to the cost of the Genesis controller, but $50 seems quite high even considering that when the retro-bit controllers probably have the same license and are $15 less (and they include dongles!). Thanks for clarifying what the C and Mode buttons register as I won't be picking this up, but I do want to get the N64 controller.

Its absolutely high, but there is a couple more differences beyond the licensing fee, and that's that these are produced in much smaller quantities and, I assure you, are using much better quality components then the Retrobit offerings. I've opened up the official Sega licensed Retrobit controllers and found them still using the exact same PCB's as when they were doing unlicensed knock-off versions that cost much less than what they charge now. There's no real reason to order one of these, but there are at least reasons they cost more than the Retrobit ones.

I had original Genesis with 3 button controller and played all games with it including Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat. they are playable,so you use button combination for X Y Z. Also 95%+ Genesis games only use 3 buttons. The larger 3 button controller is more ergonomic and comfortable vs 6 buttons one too. But I agree at this point they probably should’ve released 6 button worldwide not only in Japan.

My notes about this: 8Bitdo has kits for 6 button, smaller Mega Drive controllers that are switch compatible - only the mapping might be weird until the system option became available for it. The Dpad design changed a lot with Mega Drive controllers one weird revision has the pivot pressing points in BACK SIDE of the PCB, with a weird funnel going through the PCB with large disc that pivots against a point in back case - with some lube added too for better than N64 measure. This D-pad design is more like sega's later Dpad designs, in their small 6button pads and Sega saturn pads, though the membrane is not round... Which is weird just that because of the crazy variety especially in 3-Button western controllers, nobody will have the same feel as they had as a child, not likely, and in this case clashing the later designs from later controllers into the older controller "replica".

Pair this with an 8Bitdo M30 and you can use it on real hardware. It defaults as a 6-button controller for those few games that use the "mode" button, even though it only has 3 buttons. Some games require an actual 3 button controller and the "Mode" button can be held for 3 seconds until the M30's blue light flashes, and then it performs as a standard 3 button controller. This is a well engineered product that is reflected in the software and the hardware. Thanks for the tear down video.

There isn’t a custom icon in the switch menu, but there is next to your profile icon when playing the Genesis Online games. So the system does recognize it to some degree, but seems the OS needs updated to fully support it.

I have a wired retro-bit 6 button controller plus L and R shoulder buttons, and i like it a lot.. i have no incentive to buy this thing, but i will admit that seeing the Sega and Nintendo logos together on a Genesis style controller blows my mind on so many levels! Never did I think, when I was a kid, that playing Sega games on Nintendo hardware like this and playing with a controller that has the words Sega and Nintendo together would ever happen!

I prefer the 3 button Genesis controller due to the size and button size of it all. Very comfortable. It isn't a good controller for fighting games, but everything else is great. I ordered one cause I don't like playing Genesis without it. Just playing Streets of Rage 2 with Joycons felt very off to me. That's cause I like precision movements.

If the A B or C button doesn't eventually stick, it's not realistic enough. Lol. We had 5 or 6 of the 3 button controllers as kids because one of the buttons would always stick or die out. Never threw them away so that's why we had so many. It was on both the ones with the red lettering (buttons & symbols) and white symbols (non painted buttons). Never owned a 6 button one, but my cousins had one when they got Street Fighter 2 Championship Edition.

What really sucks is that it's not even useful for playing NES games, which I really like the Genesis pad for ever since I played Mega Man: The Wily Wars. Something about using A as start and C as the NES A button feels really satisfying, and the D-Pad is phenomenal. Sadly, without the ability to change the input settings, most NES games will remain unplayable, or at least uncomfortable to play.

That stupid Genesis Classics game never got a controller config option from an update. That's why I can't use my Retrobit SEGA Saturn controller properly with it. This is what I was afraid of with this Genesis controller. I was hoping Nintendo would fix that issue, but this is apparently only for the Genesis Online expansion.

I cracked my one week trial to see if they'd let me buy these. I wanted the Genesis controller for the nostalgia, but my master plan didn't work out. That's very very odd mappings on the buttons. Genesis A should be X, Genesis B is fine, and Genesis C should be A.

I would love this for Sonic 3 AIR on PC, but Sonic 3 AIR works best with a 6 button controller since you can map the Super/Hyper transformation button to a unique button. Also, there's no way in hell this is worth $65. Plus shipping and tax, that comes to over $80! Absolutely bonkers. I'd have gotten one for $20...

Sad, they did the d-pad wrong. Original 3-button gamepad has a special d-pad design, pushing the rubber-dome switches from the back-side of the pcb. This is more like the later d-pad of the 6-button controller, still good but not so good like the original, imho.

They really dropped the ball with the 3 buttons. 6 buttons would have put it at the $30-$40 mark and I would have snagged one.

I just got the m30 Bluetooth and I absolutely love it it works great on the switch and on Android and I just got a Bluetooth receiver for my Sega Genesis and guess what it works great on that also I ended up having the best game plays I've ever done on Streets of Rage 2 and Super Street Fighter 2 on the Genesis with the M30.

To be honest only fighting games (excpet MK) need a 6-button controller. A lot of people don't play those games. Games that were huge like Ecco, Sonic, Aladdin, Ninja Turtles, Road Rash and SO many more titles only needed the 3 button controller.

While most Genesis games will be fine, my point more lies in that for $50 you arent using this for anything else besides the Genesis online stuff, if it was 6 buttons it'd be more versatile for plenty of other games.. not just Sega online stuff... if we got the 6 buttons version it would be great for stuff like the Street Fighter collection and plenty of other types of games. Itd be a bit more valuable for people as theyd beable to use it more.

As a 90s kid who grew up with the SNES instead of the Genesis it feels so odd seeing Nintendo logos all over the Genesis controller which that console really talked a lot of game against the SNES.

If it's registering as a Pro Controller, does that mean you can remap it in the system settings? I know the other NSO controllers specifically won't let you do that.

No, it's more like the SNES and NES online layout but with the white-on-black grid pattern on the sides. In Nintendo's preview of it I thought the same thing

The Sega Genesis Classics collection is complete garbage in every way, it just has a nice interface, that's it. Emulation is the worst of any compilation ever released on every platform, sound is off and delayed, huge input lag and slowdowns and the online is a joke, don't make the same mistake of so many, it wasn't released in Japan for a reason. Genesis on NSO is the best quality Genesis emulation there is and it even has rollback netcode, so the online is far superior than what you get on the N64 games.

You should revisit the video ... emulation versus the competition After Thanksgiving when a large number of people will have experienced the expansion pack cause for the cost of two years of NSOEP you can get a RasPie 4 max starter kit and a 8bitdo Bluetooth receiver

I’ll pass on that and just get a hold of the 6 button controller, well at least they used the 1650-50 version of the 3 button controller for this, it has that decent central pivot that previous revisions never had

Good to know that it doesn't work on officially released games. I guess you'd need to install a genesis emulator to be able to fully use it which is ironic.

Finally someone tears down the Genesis Controller! Good lord, 50 dollars for this. This is absolutely not worth the price of admission. I have no clue why Nintendo didn't just release the 6-button pad like Japan gets. I know in an interview they said that the 3 button controller was the one most people used back in the day in Europe and the US, but there's nothing wrong with allowing an option to pick which one you want to order. The region restriction is ridiculous. Let people order the US purple/lavender, European colored button SNES controller and Japanese Super Famicom controller if they want, same with the Famicom and NES Online versions of the NES controller. The N64 controller, I can sort of understand the price point on. The molds are long since unused and they haven't made them in ages and the stick is relatively custom. But this just has nothing going for it.

Yes, and that Sega Genesis Classics collection happens to be absolutely terrible, the worst emulation of any collection ever released on all platforms, and never released in Japan for that reason. Don't make that mistake, Genesis on NSO is there because people asked for good quality Genesis releases from M2, and it's great.
