More than one million people died just in the U.S. as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic that broke out in 2020. But a scientific miracle - a vaccine released later that same year - saved countless lives. Last year Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman, the two scientists whose research in messenger RNA (or mRNA) and immunology enabled the development of the Pfizer and Moderna COVID vaccines, were named Nobel Prize-winners. "Sunday Morning" contributor Kelefa Sanneh talks with Weissman and Karikó about their partnership, and the unusual trajectories of their lives that led to a breakthrough that may reshape vaccine treatment for a host of diseases.

Totally different in regards to how an mRNA vaccine's mode of action works, and possible side effects compared to a typical vaccine that either has chopped up, dead virus/bacteria, or has a weakened/attenuated germ. Lipoproteins in the mRNA vaccine that go into cells and permeate various organ systems instead of staying in the injected muscle makes it different as well. Basically you are comparing apples to beef...it is a whole different animal, not even a different type of fruit.

Makes me sad that these individuals worked extremely hard to save lives and create a vaccine only to have a political party and its millions of voters lie in countless ways to ruin confidence in a life saving drug. So many more lives could have been saved if this was not turned into a political issue. The disinformation has been getting so bad that even more people are starting to doubt the usefulness of vaccines in general. Do we really want to see large outbreaks of measles, mumps, rubella, polio, smallpox or any of the other diseases that were mostly eradicated by high vaccinations rates in the past? Just so an orange haired man can stay in power and question anything and anyone who disagrees with him.

Imagine thinking that the few side effects from being exposed to spike proteins are somehow worse than being inundated with the actual virus full of spike proteins that left millions dead on ventilators for an entire year before the vaccine came out... @@nochepatada To answer your question, yes. Both my son and daughter are fully vaccinated and have both caught COVID after being vaccinated. The vaccine kept them from having worse symptoms than they otherwise would have. COVID is a horrible, wily adversary. These vaccines have saved hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of lives. My magic bullet comment was more about the development of mRNA vaccines in general. The potential for vaccines to fight intractable diseases like AIDS and malaria is a modern scientific miracle, and I’m grateful for folks like Drs. Karikó and Weissman, who have dedicated their lives to researching such treatments. BTW, you might enjoy looking up the origin of the term “magic bullet.” It’s fascinating. So much so that Hollywood made a movie about it years ago starring the great Edward G. Robinson. Thank you for the opportunity to share some information with you, Night Kicker. Peace and good health to you!

@@nochepatada To answer your question, yes, both my children are fully vaccinated against COVID and both have gotten it after being vaccinated. But they experienced only mild symptoms instead of possible hospitalization or death because of the vaccine. The magic bullet I was referring to was more general -- the mRNA vaccines developed by Drs Karikó and Weissman. This class of vaccine will revolutionize treatment of intractable diseases like AIDS and malaria, and possibly cancers. For that, they deserve their Nobels and our profound thanks. BTW, "magic bullet" has an interesting true story behind it; so much so that Hollywood made a movie about it years ago starring Edward G. Robinson. You might look it up. There will be the people who are against, and those that are for vacinnes. There are those that were saved by the vacinnes, and were those that weren't. There were those that were hospitalised with COVID and survived (that was me in 2020 in a UK ICU, and still suffering with the aftermath almost 4yrs on), and there were those that sadly died from it. It's been a very heavily discussed and fought over subject, and sometimes the divider of friendship, family relations, and marriages.
