My favourite Norse myth story is one time Thor was fishing in Midgard- then Loki did a little trolling turned into a trout to mess with Thor, Thor got mad and grabbed fish Loki by the tail and crashed his tail and that’s why fish are oval shaped- yes Thor is so strong he broke reality and made all fish that had, did and will exists have oval shaped bodies yeah Kratos is strong but is he reality breaking strong?

Norse pagan here... I think you're mixing 2 stories. Thor goes on a fishing trip with the Giant Hymir and catches Jörmungandr via using an ox head for bait. Alternatively, after for a handful of potential reasons (thanks old Scandinavians for only speaking their stories) Loki hides in a creek as a salmon. Nets don't work on loki, so Thor grabs loki, some say with his hands, some say with his teeth, the way a bear would. I'm not sure where the oval fish idea came from, but I may be wrong and there may definitely be a story involving what you have described

@Suavek Also Scandinavian here: I don't remember hearing about how or when Surtr was created. At some point, he just is. I'm also not sure if Surtr is really thought of as a Jotun. @@Suavek69 It isnt actually said how he is created, he isn't a jötun, and it is implied that when Ymir and Auðhumla, the 'first' beings were being created in Ginnungagap, Surtur had already existed for eons and just did his thing in Múspellsheimur (sorry I cannot make myself do the english version of that name)
@Skyggespil
@Skyggespil Жыл бұрын
@@Suavek69 Honestly I dont remember but Im pretty sure he was always just there (like so many othes) - but I also think it is much less imporant than Runesmith gave an impression of. The main point about Surtur is that he is the one who actually destroys the world durung Ragnarok, not when he came into being. That said, a lot of the Aesir and Jætter came rather randomly into being and sort of just stumbled in from the side without too much explanation (while others have a lot more). I do love this though, because it makes it more mysterious and I almost always use it as a concept when writing pantheons for games, because it is just so out there, compared to most DnD where everything must have causality. It also makes it super easy to just introduce new gods whenever it would fit in.

I love the Finnish creation myth from the Kalevala. It's rather less violent and a bit less complicated but equally insane. Basically The North wind has a daughter. She floats around in the sky getting bored. So she descends to the ocean and floats around there getting bored. Then she gets made pregnant by sea foam but she's not going to actually give birth for 900 plus years so we can forget about that for a while. So this bird arrives and there's nowhere to nest because the world hasn't been created so it nests on her knee. It's described as a goldeneye so I think it's a duck. Which is hilarious. I want it to be a duck. So it lays eggs and they get hot. They get really hot, burn the lass, Luonnotar and she jerks so they fall into the water and burst open. Out of the yolk of one comes the sun the white of another the moon, the speckles on one shell are the stars and a big chunk of eggshell becomes the first land. Sometime later Vainamoinen is born but he's really old already and has like no luck in love so where the rest of people come from is anybody's idea. He has lots of adventures plays music, spouts wisdom and eventually when Tolkein goes to uni and reads about him he becomes Gandalf. Not sure where the bird came from - maybe dinosaurs?

Guy kills the sky, then stuff about the cardinal directions, then the gods are born thanks to iscest, then Zeus murders his dad who killed the sky, and also some stuff about the land, sea, and Tartarus (Hades got totally screwed over, and so did the cyclopses and the many armed dudes), and yeah

I hate christianization of mythology. Especially what they did to all death/underworld gods, because they basically turned all of them into villains (and then modern popculture just doubled down on it). Like Hades is probably the best major greek god while Hel from what I understand is kinda like caring, but punishing mother for the "unfortunate" souls that literally might save (or doom - I assume it might have depended on how many good or bad non warrior people were sent to her) the world. And they both got "evil villain" mark (Hel even got the worst place imaginable in christianity named after her).

I assume the powerful beings by mentioned again are supposed to be too far away to be relevant.

Hello! Just wanted to give a bit more context on Snorri, he helped save a lot of the history of Norse mythology because the Christian crusades were burning any text, destroying any temples, and killing anyone who tried to preserve or tell their original history and forcing them to convert. Snorri wore in all the myths he could preserve and added in Christian beliefs and rewrote it to sound more like a fairytale rather than religious text to avoid the history from being destroyed all together and it became a primary text (the Prose Edda , the Poetic Edda came after and in academic and historical circles they are a pair, you cannot have one with out the other.) My timeline is a bit fuzzy but I believe Snorri became a political figure after the Prose Edda was written, before then he was primarily a poet and a historian.

Short version of the story is that some giants dared Tor do somethings but it was a trick set up by Loke. He attempted lift a small kitten and couldn't do it. He tried to drink but he couldn't even drink a cup. He tried to fight an old lady and got completely wrecked. Little did he know that Cat was actually Jörmungandr the world serpent and Tor almost lifted him out of the ocean. The cup was actually the ocean and he almost drank all of it and the old lady was old age itself. No one can win against old age. I forget why Loke did any of this.

I feel like I remember reading that it was a giant who Loki brought Thor to, and the giant gave the impossible tasks to then realized that Thor ALMOST SUCCEEDED, and was like, "Hey.... listen, i know I said you had to do this in order to get something back, but uhhh... why don't you take it anyways??"

Wasn't there a part of that story where Thor got tired of the tasks and went to punch the giant in the head while it was sleeping? Only to fail that as well because the giant had put a mountain in between them and used some illusion magic to trick Thor. And it ends with the giant saying something like "had i known you were this strong i would have never let you in here" and then they just walk away or something. Feel like it was Thor plus some other guys traveling together. Would be fun to hear if anyone else recognises this or if i just misremember.

You should look into eastern Woodlands native American creation myths. I specifically remember one about how the sun came to be where it is due to all the animals trying to pull it. Only the tiny spider with it's webs was able to pull the sun into place.

YES LOVE IT MORE LIKE THIS Irish folktales are fun. I'm all for starting there. I'd love to see you dig into the likes of Hindu, Egyptian, and Chinese creation myths. Greek and Norse are always wonderful to revisit, but it feels like they're somewhat over-represented sometimes. Be nice to see a focus on others.

The Origin story of Islam, told to by a Muslim. Long ago, there were beings living on Earth. One of them, named Iblis flew to the edge of Universe (likely on some kind of disk shaped vehicle) He was highly religious, and granted entrance into heaven. Iblis, so happy for this gift wondered around the garden until he saw a being made of clay. God breathed life into this being and called him Adam. Adam was given knowlege, and the God asked the angels about the names of the creatures. The angels said they didn't know, as God hadn't told them. Adam recited the names of the creatures of heaven. Then God asked Everyone to prostrate to Adam, and they did. All except Iblis, you see Iblis was proud and wanted to rule the earth. Iblis said to the effect "I am better than he is: You created me from fire and him from clay." (7:12), also it's interesting to note as Iblis is not an angel but a species called Jinn. Anyways, Iblis was told to leave but before he did he asked to be granted eternal life. God granted him eternal life, and Iblis vowed he'd lead mankind astray. Sometime later, Iblis returns and convinces Adam and his spouce to eat of the sacret tree, promising it'll give them eternal life. In islam it's not specified who ate from the tree first, and it doesn't matter. Adam and his wife ate, and they reallised they were naked. After, God banished them from heaven stating they are enemies to one another. Iblis, Adam and his Wife arrived on earth. Adam asked for forgiveness, and was made a prophet and then humanity began. From here, the war between humans and Iblis's followers, called Shaya'tiin began. Note, the Jinn are not inherantly evil. All Shaya'tiin are jinn, but not all Jinn are Shaya'tiin. Also, unlike christianity/jewaism, the Jinn are people. They eate, sleep and poop like us. Some are guided, and they even have their own religions. Anyways, this is the creation of Humanity. Now all this is from Quran, if you look it up and see anything stating "Hadith" ignore it, as Hadith is forbidden according to Quran 77:50 / 7:185 / 31:6 / 45:6

Yes, the norse creation myth is crazy. In other news, the sky is blue, blood is milk, fire is hot, and night is dark. Truthfully though, it's one of my favorites since it's just so off the wall bonkers at times, it feels like ye olde florida man stories about times some old vikings did cool stuff while drunk or high as a kite. I'm working on a story that'll heavily feature them and I wanted to do my own take on them with their own history and a differing interpretation with the mythology we know coming through a biased lens.

I like how the start of every creation myth (and I guess the scientific theories as well) is just “so yeah, there used to not be stuff, and then after who-tf-knows-how-long there was some stuff”

I always liked the lines about the fate of the evil dead, Seducers of other men's wives are torn apart by animals and his blood licked. Unlike other people entering her realm the evil dead is not inflicted with boredom and gloom, but torture. Marriage was considered to be something very holy, sworn oaths, Direct translations sound bad and hard on the English tongue is result of it being designed for a different tongue. bad ones are altered and changed to sound better on the tongue. Criminals and invaders where the main source of sacrifices. That combination of religion and execution. I know certain kinds of people want to combine romans, African, middle east cultures and concepts of evil with Celtic and Germanic religions but it's far from honest. Rome was a very destructive, pro-slavery and corrupted empire known for committing genocide on all kinds of peoples like the Welsh who was lucky not to be fully exterminated. A evil empire taken over by Christianity, that could not survive its past crimes and universalism at the same time.

I ve heard much things about north mythology before including their creation myth and christian snorri stuff, tough this was still quite enjoyable, great work! Much less known (at least to me, probably also to the majority of people) are scottish and irish (or genereal celtic) myths like Banshee's, Kelpie's and other stuff. I would love to her more about that!
