The North Shields Shanty.

Here is a song I wrote and with the help of my friend Adam Harkus, we recorded it.
It's a song alll about the canny town of North Shields. Once a thriving fishing town, and the place I was born.
I thought it was fitting to write a 'shanty' style song.

Thanks for the compliment Rob..Coming from a fishing town, i do remember the "cod wars", even though i was a bairn..I still remember when the fish quay in shields had trawlers 3 deep. Then the EU stepped in and spoilt everthing..We knew how to fish and sustain the fish since history began..North shields has a fascinating history..I may have to do a vid..The name 'shields' comes from the word for the old fishing huts the monks of tynemouth priory used..'Shiels' that goes back till the 1300's.

Interesting... I remember in Scotland they used the word sheiling as a shelter for shepherds and sheep Looking it up in the dictionary it says Middle English (northern dialect) schele; probably akin to OldFrisian skiāle stable, Old Norse skjōl shelter First Known Use: 13th century

Very nice Dave... I love a song with a story to it and you certainly nailed this one. My Dad came from Wick in Caithnesshire and he well remembered the fishing boats in the harbour, but when I went up there they have all gone. I don't suppose you remember the "cod wars" that the UK had with Iceland over fishing rights. Being an Island you would think the UK would maintain the tradition of fishing. When I lived in Neasden NW10 I sung "the bonnie shoals o' herring" wae the Irish lads in their pubs
