I've heard them at 50 below on the western Yukon stretch of the Alaska highway.. Static from the upper atmosphere... Not unsettling... Magnificent!!

I used to live in Nunavut and see them every night almost but never heard the sound. Been to Whitehorse years ago but didn’t see Northern lights when I was there. Was there for the army cadet summer camp.

Absolutely rubbish. I have taken drone footage from very high up and never heard a single thing. Plus I live in Finland and have seen Aurora 100+ times in some fantastic storms and again never once heard anything from the upper atmosphere.

@@peterrichardson4439 Aurora noise, similar to a crackling noise, begins about 70 m (230 ft) above Earth's surface and is caused by charged particles in an inversion layer of the atmosphere formed during a cold night. The charged particles discharge when particles from the Sun hit the inversion layer, creating the noise. (Wikipedia) Maybe the ones you’ve seen didn’t meet the conditions required for you to hear them. I’ve never seen them myself but I’ve seen plenty of footage of completely silent ones.

Sounds like whistling wind static lol once years ago we saw the lights and heard a sound of what sounded like somebody playing a cello made of rice crispies it was absolutely beautiful the deepness of that spectacular instrument mixed with static .. .sad to think I will never hear that sound again as all auroras are different

I mean it does sound creepy but also beautiful at the same time. Like birds, whales and firecrackers but also creepy wind sounds

The particles that make the sound are not the same as those that make lights. The light are from particles that discharge much higher in the atmosphere. The particles that make the sound are discharging about a hundred meters above the ground. And that's why you can hear them. But it doesn't necessarily happen just because there is an aurora there.

That sound they played is when someone used a radio device to listen to it. The solar wind has radio waves. I have heard of people hearing a whooshing noise to the plain ear.

Beautiful. The crackles and pops sound like a Geiger counter. It is solar radiation. Ethereal and the song of nature. Never knew they had a sound.

That's because these people claiming to hear it are lying. I live in Finland and have seen the Aurora 100+ times in some very very big storms and NEVER heard anything from the atmosphere

If you live anywhere remotely populated, you won't hear it. If you want to hear it you have to go well into the Arctic circle. The noises in these videos are also amplified by about 1000x with instruments the researchers used to capture the sound. The sound we hear with the naked ear is a low hum, similar to the sound of a car passing your house while you sit inside on the couch, just continuously.

I think that this is BS. I think that what we hear is the sound of a frozen lake with a breeze, was this recorded near a frozen lake? The famous Swedish KZbinr, Jonna Jinton, records the Norther Lights and the sound of frozen lakes all the time...the noise in her videos is clearly from the ice.

I just now seen and Heard the first one ever in person and had no idea that there was a sound! for me, it was nothing more than almost the sound of an old picture tube tv turned on with no volume up. kind of a low-level static.
