I really liked the Shen Zhou and the Walker class it did feel like something between the NX class and Constitution class. I think it is my favorite ship from Discovery actually.

my head cannon is that it is "related" to the Ares class and both were replaced by the Miranda. same kind of saucer, no neck, secondary hall, underslung warp nacelles, etc. not the biggest or fastest horse in Starfleet, but i would not mind being a captain of one

Those first two episodes are like the Battlestar Gallactica Reimagined tv series and I love it. The Walker class is fantastic.

I have enjoyed all 3 forms of Walker class in STO. The early (T3 ish) was a very overpowered way to level even with the introduction of using T6 ships from the start. The prototype exploration cruiser allowed you to use 7 weapons from the get go. Then you had the Lobi store T6 version and the Legendary after that.

I'm not much of a fan of Discovery, but the Walker class is a pretty neat looking ship. Most of the Starfleet ships introduced in season 1 looked pretty cool, with the biggest exception being the Discovery itself. It seemed like a really bad move to introduce a ship that looked as cool as the Shenzhou, then set the rest of the show on a Ralph McQuarrie castoff from several decades prior. The Walker class really reminded me of a more advanced version of the Centaur type ship, which was a ship I always thought looked cool. That was one of the biggest problems with the design work in season 1; everything looked like it should have come after Picard, not before Kirk.

As for ships to look over, how about some more of the lesser known support ships like the USS Huron? Freighter's aren't glamorous, but they got to get away with a lot more creative changes by not having to be "sleek and cool looking"

it is a beautiful ship in it's way I can somewhat see this being almost a more "Vulcanesque" design, with a very mixed earth Vulcan creative lineage... certainly, the aesthetic would speak for that, and the high-strung, stark ritualistic logic of the ship would speak for that... in many ways, per StarTrek form, it is a warship, yet, a very much science vehicle too... and, whilst in some ways it feels more "late DS9", I can see it taking the violent nature of that age in the canonical history...

One thing that I found interesting about Star Trek combat, was that combat was always so slow compared to today’s combat against ships and they had no defensive capabilities against torpedoes or other types of fighting vehicles.

I see that as unlikely, because NX major overhaul during its own lifespan was addition of secondary hull section, addition of shields, removing the warpcore into the secondary hull and removing of the antena dish fro the frontal part of the saucer, to the frontal part of the secondary hull - what allowed the NX class to go on the same category, as comparable class and sized ships of vulcan, andorian and other galactic powers. If they find out the second hull is such power upgrade, it is unlikely they will forgot its handines right before new design starts to be drawn. On the other side, it is quite possible, if Walker can fly through atmosphere, the designers decided to build it like that to be able to build it on the Earth surface dockyards, when the spacedocks are filled with all the "space only" designs...

Great video! Can I ask is there any canon data that tells us how much time it takes from development of ship design to prototyping and then final assembly-lining of ships. If you you are looking at 15 years then you are looking at obsolescence at production. And how many are usually also made. In the Galaxy class I think there was only 3 or 4. Which means there needs to be a workhorse ship that can handle conflicts and not be as costly, or time consuming, to produce. Any idea as to what ships could be one of the primary workhorses? Any info on this would be appreciated? You might even find episode ideas for you to use? TY in advance!

It was a far superior design to Discovery, but a pair of NX-like cylindrical nacelles would have gone a long way towards the making the Walker-class look less anachronistic.

The Walker is a very solid frigate very nice looking ship and I can see where the later Akira class got much of its influence from. The Walker isn't spectacular or anything groundbreaking but is really good for it's time at its job. I wouldn't say it's the successor to the NX because they had very different roles in Starfleet. The Walker is more a millitary defence ship for patrolling and responding to emergencies and attacks in federation space where ships like the constitution class and NX were designed to explore, do scientific research, diplomacy and be independent for long periods of time and be capable of defending themselves if needed.

If this design was just simpler, it would be perfect. Everything in std was so Gaudi, so over produced, that it made getting into the show difficult. If the sets, costumes, and ships simply looked like something between enterprise and toss, it would've been a much more watchable show. It's a bummer because I really do like the way this ship looks besides that. Oh well.

I don't think the Walker is the direct successor to the NX, because the Walker is way to big. I think the Bonaventure is the direct successor to the NX and the Walker is the successor to the Bonaventure.

I actually prefer the design of the Walker Class to the Crossfield Class, Shame they didn’t swap the names of the ships and destroy the monstrosity that became the Discovery. Other than that and the design of the Klingons, I actually really like Discovery.

It's a good looking boat, but it (like an awful lot of Discovery's ships, sets, props and costumes) just doesn't fit with the aesthetic that's already been established. And Strange New Worlds shows that the look of TOS can be updated while still being recognizable. That being said, the look of Discovery is generally quite good for a SF show. Interesting hearing about the NX-01 being a major design inspiration for the Walker class, since I've thought from the get-go that Discovery would have a great look if Enterprise was the original cult show and Disco was the 'TNG' revival. (Minus the changes to the Klingons and their ships, especially the Klingon ships which just didn't look great).

how the hell did you come up with it being after enterprise, how did they go from round nacelles to straight almost bike like angles. non of it makes sense and would be part of the abrams verse and not the main timeline.
