In the weeks since Hamas carried out its devastating terrorist attack in southern Israel, Times journalists have been trying to work out why the Israeli security services failed to prevent such a huge and deadly assault.
Ronen Bergman, a correspondent for The New York Times, tells the story of one of the warnings that Israel ignored.
Guest: Ronen Bergman (www.nytimes.com/by/ronen-bergman) , a staff writer for The New York Times Magazine.
Background reading:
• A blueprint reviewed by The Times laid out the Oct. 7 attack in detail. Israeli officials dismissed it as aspirational (www.nytimes.com/2023/11/30/wo...) .
• Here’s the latest (www.nytimes.com/live/2023/12/...) on the war.

Rule number one, the leader is always right. Rule number two, if the leader is wrong refer to rule number one. Respect with support or find another job. Never believe what you see or hear with your own eyes, a quote of President Trump, his words of wisdom for all of us, because he's innocent, a sharp contrast to JFK's full secret society speech warning all of us to keep an eye out.

Thank you for this episode. One of the most remarkable intelligence/policy failures in modern memory. I really can't think of another case where one side literally had the enemy's entire attack plan--and decided, nah, they can't do that, and to ignore it. Wow. Suggests a lot of wishful thinking at the top of the Israeli military and intel hierarchies.

Hi Ronen Bergman. In your NYT piece from May 21, 2021 titled "A Look Inside Israel’s ‘Fortress of Zion’ Military Command Beneath Tel Aviv" you reported: "This room is the nerve center of a bunker dubbed the “Fortress of Zion,” a new Israeli Army command post deep underground beneath its headquarters in the heart of Tel Aviv." In your opinion, does this qualify as the kind of command and control center that violates the laws of war by operating within a high-density civilian area? Bearing in mind that the bunker referred to is just next door to Ichilov - the largest maternity hospital in Tel Aviv? And if your answer is "no" could you kindly explain why not? Thanks.

Not to be rude but thats an ignorant question. Ask anyone who served in any army ever and he will tell you these two things 1. The intelligence services don’t usually deal with the enemy, this is the army’s job in most cases 2. Its not so simple to destroy a terrorist organisation embedded in civilian territory. Especially without civilian casualties this doesn’t justify the death of civilians but explains why it is so difficult for the IDF to complete the job. The truth is if civilian casualties or public opinion really didn’t matter to Israel/IDF they could destroy all of Hamas’ military capability in a few days, but the price in civilian lives would be unbearable

I agree with everything that you wrote except for; ' Trump "allowed" '. Trump was the front-man. "Person, Man, Woman Camera, TV" wasn't studying the Constitution, he was playing golf (he promised his Voters that he wouldn't). I'm certain that he was aware of what he was actively encouraging but he wasn't the mastermind. Stopping the Senate from certifying the election on Jan. 6 would have thrown it into the House where it is one US state/one Vote. Democrats held the majority in the House BUT a majority of the US States had elected mostly Republicans to the Washington House - (it "almost" makes you question the Media consolidation that began with the Reagan Administration and why as recently as successfully blocking Biden's infrastructure Bill, conservative media dominates the Midwest where all businesses but few residents have broadband). One state/one Vote would have meant a Republican majority, for that US House of Representatives election certification. Trump hadn't planned that, he was the very willing front-man. It's why they'd prefer to try with someone else, like Ron DeSantis.
