David Brent is a *FAR* more tragic and lonely character than Michael Scott. Michael actually had a wide array of girlfriends throughout the series history, while David desperately struggled to get even one. He only managed to find someone in the very last episode of the show. I think it's because, although Michael can be oblivious to social cues, he carries himself with great confidence and charisma, so women are willing to give him a shot. David, on the other hand, has absolutely no confidence in himself whatsoever; his awkward "macho" behavior is just hot air, and he prefers to talk about people behind their back due to insecurity. David is also much more intolerable than Michael and is a horrible boss. Michael was the top salesman for two years in a row and the Scranton branch was kept afloat because his management style, even though it annoys his co-workers, gets results from clients. Meanwhile, David got fired in the second season lol I could go on and on about how depressing David Brent's life is. Even though The Office UK is technically a comedy series, David's character is brilliantly nuanced and scripted, to the point where he is more fascinating than most drama characters. Some thanks to Ricky Gervais' subtle behavioral traits when playing him.

@@elijahjacobs5319 Irene Adler was only in the one Sherlock Holmes story and Moriarty in two stories yet they're the most iconic characters in Sherlock Holmes outside of the main duo; time on screen does not necessarily mean a more well rounded character and explored character. Michael Scott's character was one that started as a petulant man child but learns his lesson at the end of the day, even in Season 2 (I will concede they were similar in delivery in S1 but they essentially air-lifted the script across the pond so I think the point is a tad moot. People can argue that but you will also have to explain every single other inconsistency from S1 that is pushed under the rug). David Brent, from the very first scene we see him, changes very little and that is not showcasing poor writing or a lack of development as a character but far more representative of the reality that the UK office attempted to and very successfully conveyed. And, more importantly, we know that David is very unlikely to change despite him "getting the girl" at the very end, and if that isn't some Chekhov levels of realism I don't know what is.

There is such a different vibe to the UK office compared to the US that they are almost unrelated. When I watch the UK office I can see subtle behaviours that I can relate to real life. the US office is funny, but for example Dwight lighting a fire and breaking keys in their locks to create a realistic fire drill is so over the top as to be totally unbelievable.

I feel like you can actually see the paradigm shift in the American Office. The first season and a half or so have the same painful, awkward comedy, with a Michael Scott who is more irritating than loveable. The set lighting is dim and all the characters are pale and washed-out looking. As the series progresses, even the lighting changes to a more standard, bright, sitcom TV lighting. The characters start to look less tired, many of them get beauty upgrades (even Phyllis and Meredith look less perpetually depressed), and everything gets wacky enough that the audience has a degree of separation from the characters, because we know it isn't real life. I love the US Office, and I want to give the UK one a try. I know that it's "bolder" television, but every time I watch it it's just so painfully awkward. Even the beginning of the US Office hurts me, to a degree.

I've watched both versions and I like both but to me, the UK is largely superior. It's bleak and upfront. There is no happy ending or big life lesson, because characters don't learn much from their failures and pretty much stagnate. It resonates with me because that's how life is and how most people are. It's cruel and unapologetic. You could argue that it's not what you want to see on TV but that's exactly the point of the show, imo, and why it has a boring name like "The Office". By definition, an office is bland and dull, but it doesn't mean there's nothing to say about it. That's the genius of it. I also love the fact that the UK version stopped after 2 seasons and gave us some quality closure. The US version went for farrr too long and became straight up embarrassing in the later seasons. Both are good. What was supposed to be a remake turned out to be a completely different series with different motives, aimed at different audiences very quickly, so I guess there's no point comparing them side by side.

The UK office tried to add some commentary of the soul crushing beat of office life, something as mundane as a paper company kind of punctuates that with the most dour office park ever in the intro (which is just anywhere in Slough), the central theme is endless monotonous repeating cycles and an inescapable fate in work that ultimately isn't fulfilling. The intro also reflects this with the cars in the roundabout. The US Office retained most from the UK version but dropped this commentary for light hearted goofy scenarios. I have no problem with either, but it is interesting to see the change of both.

The UK version of "The Office" highlights just how awkward and mundane it is to be in a work environment where you have to deal with people you don't like and have little in common with. The air of apathy is present, which lends itself to feeling more realistic (if somewhat downbeat). In that way, it's quite grounded in reality. The only over the top element is David Brent who is a clueless buffoon that's oblivious to how many the people in the office truly dislike him. The US version of "The Office" differs with an emphasis on the characters lack of self awareness and poor social interaction skills. Michael Scott is a buffoon but one with a heart. He annoys people but they don't actively dislike him in the same manner that David Brent is viewed. Characters in the US version often pull outlandish pranks or behave in a more overt way then their British counterparts do. The tone is snarky but a little more upbeat in nature.

And Athlead is some fairy god mother wish come true ending for him which is so unlike the UK version.

But if anyone found out that they could have their dream job and make more than their currently making, then they would. It's clearly that UK office is so depressing, and it's very weird because it is a comedy show. While the US office on the other hand, It's very funny and also it made me cry several times. When Michael realized something that makes him cry, also makes me cry, or Pam having relationship issues with Roy makes me cry also. One scene that I cried so much and so long in Season 3 is when Jim saw Pam's letter with the medal while having his interview in the corporate office says something "Don't forget us when you're famous" I really cried into that, but it did not made me depressing. They're still at the point where in, make it cryable, but remember this is a comedy show.

I’ve recently started watching The Office UK, and I find it to be way more different than the US Series. The US Series may be happy, funny, and romantic to appeal to the average American audience, however the downside to it is the further distance from a realistic work environment, it is unrealistic. But for the UK Series, I found it to be more depressing, accurate, realistic, and genius, its easy to tell how much thought actually went into this series, and this isn’t the stuff I’d expect from The Office

The assessment of this show seems to be based upon social norms. Not everyONe fits into the herd of sheep so easily . Society has a way of persecuting individuals who don't fall in line and just be mindless and asleep like everyone else. His insecurities come from knowing who he is and knowing he's not well perceived, at least not the way he wants to be. We're all different. And we all need to learn to just Deal With It!
