A few fun facts: - I've seen other characters glance at the camera during Talking Heads. Pam. Michael. Dwight. Even Creed. But most of the time, they talk to the producers. - Jim only really starts doing it around Season 2. I think it's an idea that evolved, the more they understood his character. - Even wilder is when Jim and Pam share Talking Heads, he'll look at the camera and she'll look at the producers. Another thing I’ve noticed, is that when characters do their talking heads in the conference room, Jim is the only one with his back facing outside. Everyone else’s back faces the office. That is until Pam starts dating Jim in season 4 and then she starts to face the same way as Jim.

I've always felt that the way the camera points or zooms or does anything and the cameraman moves/interacts with the people almost makes it feel like you are a part of the show, like another person in the office watching everything happen. I think it's one of the reasons you're able to get lost in the show while binge watching

Nice video essay. The camera was a character. The camera work and editing werr just as important to this format. Many copy cats or official remakes miss the camera character completely. They just zoom, pan, dash for no rhyme or reason.

Very interesting video. Would be cool to see you compare the two styles of the original and the US. I’ve always thought that the British was incredibly believable as a documentary, whereas the US is far more polished.

Jeremy I always thought that the UK is far more believable as a documentary. The US uses far more cameras, and cuts between them. It looks far more professional and more like a regular sit com than the UK, which I think looks more raw.

Wow ... this is an amazing video. As someone who only recently "discovered" and binge watched the office in the last couple years, I found myself enamored of how attached I was to the series. Your treatment on this nailed it for me. The camera work induces the audience into feeling like it's a character in the show. Participating in witnessing. The different styles of camera work incorporated were brilliantly executed. Thank you for making this video! So much more newfound appreciation of this series. I was just thinking about how the long distance intimacy shots that you were talking about give the perspective of not just a camera crew, but you when your at work, and you see so and so talking over there in that corner. It feels like a real way we often catch glimpses of interpersonal interactions in a workplace.

I didn't watch all episodes of the office but it sticks out in my mind as having great character creations and the actors who brought them into life. Being able to look into the camera and acknowledge the camera operator as just that, a camera operator, allows for more personal connection for the audience. as least in my opinion.

We had to do a final project for my psychology class, and my group chose to film it, with the _brilliant_ (please note the sarcasm here) idea of filming it in this style. It was only 3-4 minutes long, and it was definitely fun to act it out, but, I mean, we're high-schoolers with less than a week to plan and create it. Poor quality was guaranteed. At the same time, the class mostly laughed at the right times, and the teacher loved it for some reason. Anyway, wonderful analysis! My groupmates and I were like, yeah let's just go for it, you'll look at the camera here, and we'll pan the camera (the iPhone, in our case) that way for humor. But I see there's a lot more to it! Awesome video :)

It always bugged me that they cut to cameras that aren't there! I love the show but I always thought that was a huge mistake depending on who the director of the episode is. If you count them, sometimes there are more than ten cameras recording them... four in the office, four or five following someone that went out, other four in another part of the office, etc. I'm so glad you talked about that!
