Gotta say -- the Christmas special is really a masterpiece. It's so hard to end a sitcom in a satisfying way, but they pulled it off. Tim and Dawn. David and his blind date. It's sweet without being saccharine or feeling forced or contrived. Perfect capper to a perfect series. A very rare thing.
@s559tja2 жыл бұрын
It was a fluke. Look at everything Gervais has done since, it's exactly what you've described: saccharine and contrived. He doesn't know how to end a show.

@@s559tja It's not a fluke. I wouldn't call Gervais a genius but he is, at times, fucking funny and insightful and has that fearlessness/recklessness that separates him from the more career-minded. His stand up, The Ricky Gervais Show and early appearances on UK tele and XFM are still head and shoulders above contemporary comedians that might be more fondly remembered. His bloody Tweets are still funnier and more on point than 99% of NA comedians entire careers. I think Extras is interesting because, while being a worthy sequel to The Office and still relatively early in his career, it concentrates on the unavoidable trappings of celebrity. It's almost like he's saying "yeah, ok, but don't blame me if I get swept away in this shit". I honestly don't think he did; he just tried and failed to give Hollywood a go. What comedian wouldn't? I'm not his biggest fan and, being brutally honest, I don't think 90% of other comedians are either but he is _still_ his own version of funny and for that alone I think he deserves respect.

It's so intriguing to see parallels between their television work and their chats on the xfm show. I feel like xfm was Ricky and Steve exploring their senses of humour, while poking the shaved chimp with a stick and putting bins on his head.

I love that you were able to link the XFM shows to the script. You’re probably one of the only people with that level of insight. Out of interest, how did you come to acquire the script?
@ryanmortimer98492 жыл бұрын
you used to be able to buy the script I think; in an XFM episode they speak about being NY Times Best Selling Authors for a Non-Fiction piece for their script book
@axw2 жыл бұрын
@@ryanmortimer9849 That was the script books (shown at 1:13 in this video), which aren't actually proper scripts. The script used as the focus for this video was owned, and then sold, by a member of the production crew.

One other thing gleamed from the Xfm shows. They originally wanted Cat Steven's song Sitting to be the theme song for The Office instead of the cover of Handbags and Gladrags. This would have also tied in with Cat Stevens being used for Extras.

Always find these cut scenes interesting. Probably will never happen but it would be great if Jesse and Sam released some of the known 'un-filmed' Peep Show scripts to the public [like the rest of the original series 3 with Nancy+ Toni, the 'female peep show' pilot material etc].
@davidz38792 жыл бұрын
Nancy & Toni were going to be in s3? Why aren't they?
@jamesatkinsonja2 жыл бұрын
@@davidz3879 Both had other commitments apparently. They were replaced by Big Suze [Nancy] and on a one off basis Michelle [Toni]. From what I gather 'Mugging' would have been close to what was filmed but the rest of the series would change [including Toni and Johnston getting together]. Andrew went into more detail in his 'Peep Show in Paris' video.

Great to have more content. What was the TV show you got instead of the office on the Chinese DVD's out off interest [0:16]? 3:19 due to the nature of my job, I have to reference the companies house website quite often so I'm very familiar with that layout!
@axw2 жыл бұрын
Disc 1 contains series 1 and 2 of The Office, Disc 2 contains series 2(?) of the American Office in awful quality, and Disc 3 is unplayable but contains more content from series 2(?) of the American Office. There is no Office Christmas Specials anywhere, despite the DVD cover (and all the discs) using the Christmas Specials cover photo. The back cover contains information from both the original and the American versions, and inside the case there's advertising for random American TV shows, like CSI, in English, poorly translated English, and Spanish. It's a mess.

Neil is a necessary character to clip Brent's wings a bit and make him an underdog and easier to route for which isn't present enough in series 1 [as Jennifer is used sparingly].
