No matter how long the process takes, I'll always be here to see the 86's progress. Been following since he bought the car, and now even though it's a slow process, I can really sense that when the 86 gets put back up together, she's gonna be one of if not the best example of an AE86 ever.

Being in the vehicle restoration for longer than I care to remember, a little tip, get some hammerite kurust, dab it on some grey or red scotch brite and go to town on your steel engine parts, wipe it over so the whole part is covered, let it change colour but still damp, give it a good scotch to clean the pitted areas and depends what finish your after, paint/ clear coat or metal polish, you can get away with painting most of the pulleys but not the surface the cambelt runs on, great channel guys, my inner geek is loving the ae86 history and numbers

Did you take into account New Zealand? A shitload of AE85s and AE86s ended up here and many rusted out or got wrapped around trees and lamposts, but many still live on. 20 years ago, you couldn't give away an AE85 or 86, then the drift scene started and that consumed a lot of them, and nowadays they are highly sought after cars. A bare body shell will sell for the same price as a brand new bmw.

Your starter motor contacts are worn ! (I can see it in the film), I might have some in garage, when I worked at White and Lockwood Toyota we used to order them from somewhere (not Toyota), some electrical supplier. You can swap the worn one for the good one sometimes and it will last another few thousand miles. Only one wears (the first one that contacts), I used to swap them for new all the time at Toyota. But you can swap one side to the other at a push (Ask Bryan D). Please dont use wire brush on pistons a brass (suede) brush is much less aggressive but just as effective. (It wont damage the alloy). Please don't sand your valves ( I learned this at Toyota and Yamaha training courses) lots of valves are sterite coated or titanium, (I thought the silver or blacktop had titanium but I might be wrong it might be the Black top beams im thinking about) these valves can be cleaned with bench grinder with wire brush wheel attatchment in seconds with much less damage to the coating on the valve. Some of Nissan, Ford, Toyota and Honda engines I have worked on have stated in the Genuine workshop manual that if the valve is sterite then it should not even be ground in. The cylinder head was copied by Toyota from the Cosworth BD engine family. I have seen Toyota USA genuine adverts for the 4AGE , they used it in a single seater one engine series and in N.A form the 1587cc engine produced 250bhp. Love the chassis number episodes, All Euro cars have 17 digit Vin numbers, thats how we tell an import bike or car from Japan in the uk, the Toyota manuals (genuine) used to tell you loads of info in the front pages like what all the letters meant. I think Bryan is great, I bet he's forgotten more than we will ever know. Remember its T1 and TE1 that you short for timing !!!! (But thats another story). Much love, Michael Mahoney (michael marni).

FYI there are sites online with all of the EPC data and parts diagrams since way back. Can't really access the stuff under the hood like that though, obviously. I've had access to the current Microcat system and it all mostly checks out, except for replacement parts numbers. Shame you can't pull production numbers from MC too since it's all web-based. My plan before was to buy some of those car identification manuals the parts departments used to get before you could just write the VIN into a program and get all the info on the car. I.e. the time before time when Toyota workshop and parts guys actually knew what codes meant. Those manuals show up on YAJ and I'm fairly sure they also contain VINs and production numbers. Still wanna do it to figure out all the E70s ever made, those numbers should be wiiiiiild.

Would suggest that cleaning unpainted (or painted but leaving original paint on) parts is better in ultrasonic bath. When blasting we make surface more rough by making micro craters what is not good for gasketed surfaces and roughness makes better adhesion of dirt. Ultrasonic cleaning on the other hand saves paint ang original roughness while removing rust and dirt to real JUST OUT OF FACTORY state. On video we see that blasting didn`t remove soot on throttle plates while ultrasonic cleaning would make it superclean. Any type of blasting is good when prepearing for painting or removing old paint, but for cleaning purposers ultrasonic is best choise. Dreaming of making big enough ultrasonic bath for my shop to fit engine block in. That`s probably only way to clean rusty water passages and remove all deposits in oil channels.
@juiceboxforyou5 жыл бұрын
An ultrasonic Cleaner would have been a good option, unfortunately we do not have access to a decent one. The Media used for this type of blasting was incredible fine, leaving a very smooth finish, the pitting will still exist in places but it its almost impossible to see with the naked eye, I would hope that the softer material of a gasket will help to seal the necessary places. I guess this is trial and error, we will see how it goes!

@juiceboxforyou5 жыл бұрын
From what we can gather, the AE88 is just a vin separation code that Toyota decided to use to distinguish between the US models, AE86 is still stamped on the frame of both the GTS and the SR models and the code still corresponds to the original numbers.
