I was visiting Detroit from East Coast Canada. Walking back to my hotel from my worksite in a suit and briefcase. I had this on my phone walking by a bus stop on 9th mile. My headphone jack pulled out at the start of the chorus. I was ready to run if needed but instead they started dancing to it and I joined in. Most fun and scariest part of my trip.

A quick fact about lead singer Dexter Holland. In his spare time he is researching a cure for Aids. In March 2013, Holland and co-authors published a paper in PLoS One regarding microRNA in HIV genomes, titled "Identification of Human MicroRNA-Like Sequences Embedded within the Protein-Encoding Genes of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus". The original academic paper describes the use of computational molecular biological (in silico) approaches to identify microRNA-like sequences in HIV. These sequences are suggested to have evolved to self-regulate survival of the virus in the host by evading its immune responses and thus influence the persistence, replication, and pathogenicity of HIV. Holland was awarded his Ph.D. in molecular biology during the USC Commencement on May 12, 2017. Pretty fly for a white guy.

Some parts of this song are references to other songs. The German-sounding phrase at the beginning refers to a Def Leppard song (Rock of Ages) from the '80s. The Spanish counting refers to a '60s song called Wooly Bully by Sam the Sham & the Pharaohs, but they add the "cinquo, cinquo ses" to that to mix it up a bit. Those were fun song references that a lot of savvy music lovers in the '90s would have understood and gotten a little smile. They were sort of inside jokes, little Easter eggs for those in the know.
