I disagree.. i feel as opposed to 6 underground this movie has handled a close knit group of mercenaries very well. The back and forth of past to present and story telling was smooth. Their plot holes were 99% plugged and it all had a purpose without it being over the top or just the first instalment made for introduction. Action scenes where fantastic and their comfort in combat next to each other was evident.

For a 6000 year old immortal who’s fought her way this far, I would have loved to see that reflected in the choreography. The bits of the old guard using a mix of their individual traditional weapons with modern firearms was great in the first fight but was not played up in the remainder of the film, shame.
@keandric27654 жыл бұрын
You should go watch the bts videos on the fight choreography. The stunt coordinator/fight choreographer guy seemed to put quite a Lot of thought into it actually: how Andy would move, how she would use weapons, what different styles she would use and how she would fluidly move through them, ect :)

It’s the characters and the relationships that sell this movie for me honestly. A lot of superhero action type films can do great action and good plots, but the small and sincere character moments often gets lost in the shuffle. The Old Guard really made me fall in love with these characters so that I would care and want to know more about their story. I think it is the perfect beginning story for a trilogy, more future films can tackle more of the history of the characters. I love that the movie kept things simple, it’s gives us a rather straightforward story that is easy for people who didn’t read the comics to get into. But it peppers in the tiny details that would make any interested viewer want to chase down more information. It’s certainly led me to getting the comics. And I think that’s a success. Good franchise starters do the building blocks and don’t show all their hands too early, and The Old Guard has set a decent strong foundation that makes people want to see more and be curious. And beyond all of that, the representation for characters of color, for female characters, and LGBTQ+ characters is done so effortlessly well that I truly hope this gives a blue print to future films and shows, not just ones in the comics/superhero genre, on how to do representation well, and not have it be a token thing. Overall, this is one of the more interesting stories I’ve seen this year and it’s grabbed me so much that I’m going to delve deeper into this universe, and I hope they get a sequel greenlit!

One of my favourite aspects of the movie was Joe and Nick's relationship. As someone who's bisexual it's amazing to see a gay couple have such a healthy relationship that's important to them while they also get their job done. A lot of times gay characters' storylines are either entirely about their relationship or they have nothing to do with it and it's an afterthought. It was really nice seeing them have a nice balance

I read the comic earlier this year and was excited to see there was a movie. There were differences in the movie from the comic which I guess added a little mystery for those of us who read the comic. The big difference in my opinion was that Andy loses her ability to heal in the movie, but this is not in the storyline of the comic. The movie ending sets up the stage for a second movie which is starting just like the comic. Hopefully they will be able to do a second movie. @@heavyspoilers Not sure what you mean by "they dropped it on Netflix.." Netflix IS the "they," Netflix developed it. And they might've Had intentions to have it in theaters too like they've started doing for some of their other movies, but no one could've predicted COVID happening
@liliaeth4 жыл бұрын
@@heavyspoilers I'd say the pacing was perfect,though I have noticed that certain reviewers seem to have missed the point of it, because they focus too much on wanting cliché action scenes and explosions, and miss the emotional impact of the scenes. Like how you whine about the actors, when every actor in this movie was perfect. From the gentle eeriness of Nicky, to the intensity and gregariousness of Joe. The sadness in Booker, and how much I loved to revile Merrick, Keane and Kozak. Andy and Nile were of course excellent as well. There was not a weak spot in the entire cast. the pacing was perfect. Male pandering movies might have skipped over the introductionary scene with the baklava bet, but because of it, you instantly get attached to these characters. you start believing in them as a found family from the start, instead of just looking at a bunch of faceless action figures, like you do in the majority of action movies that mostly make me lose interest in the characters. Unlike TOG, where there wasn't a single character I didn't instantly remember the name of, which for me, is a huge thing. If you can make me like characters enough to remember their names without having to make me look them up, then you've succeeded in characterization. Every action scene in tog flowed out of characterization, even the 'exposition' scenes, did far more than just tell us the fact, they showed us how these people interact, how they welcomed Nile into the group, built up each individual member of the group, and makes you care about them. Whether it was the dinner scene, or the one with the nightmare, they make you care about these people. They show us how kind these immortals are, and how much of a damn they still give. And that is priceless, the fact that he director knew enough to slow things down, for that, is what made the movie so great, because by the time you get in the middle of the heavy action scenes, the action actually matters;, because these aren't just nameless faces being shot at. They're people you want to see safe and happy. Far too many action movies these days are too fast, rush through the emotional scenes and fall flat because you don't give a single bit of a fuck about who the chars are, cause all they are is a bunch of quips, one liners and ability to shoot people, and that well... get boring pretty quick. As a result most action movies are something you watch once and push aside, with The Old Guard, I've watched the movie over ten times so far, and every single time I watch it, I find new things to love and be excited about.

HMM men, i think this movie is ten times better than bloodshot, really the Old Guard has more background story telling

This was a film I watched that I didn't know any history about, it was a totally random watch. So as an outsider I did find it quite enjoyable. However I did feel like it was quite compressed as though it could of been a 3+ hour film forced into the space of 2, causing the film not to flow aswell as it could in a more " ideal world " situation. But overall, forgiving that aspect, it's definitely one of Charlize Theron better films.

Actually it was a part of her character development. And even in the final scene, she still doesn't kill without hesitation. That moment in the elevator, where she has to build herself up towards it. Added to her hesitation to pull the trigger when she meets Merrick. Or where she pushes Kozak out of the way but doesn't kill her. Even in the end, she doesn't kill easily, especially when she comes faced with someone who is unarmed. But she'll fight back when someone is shooting at her, or when others are in danger.

I thought it was a bit better than 7/10 - I appreciated the 'realism' in tone and sobreity of the characters. That being said, when you explained how fascinating and eccentric the comic book characters were, I would have really liked more of that, espsecially from Booker. Why was Andy the only one whose really cool weapon we got to see a lot of? Would have loved more backstories, and old fighting styles and cultures set in this context. That being said, given the dumbed-down and formulaic nature of so many marvel movies, I found this refreshing and nont nauseating at all, as I have found some MCU movies for sure.

Just finished the movie, and was interested with the premise of it. Didn't know there was a comic series based on it, but damn after reading the first two series I'd say the film was pretty good. A good 6.5/10 overall, at points the movie would be predictable and caused it to drag out a little longer than it should have, but with Daniel Hernandez as the fight scene choreographer I was quite impressed. Hopefully the series continues and learns from the feedback. Can't really wait to see where they take it.

I am curious - what would happen if a part of their bodies is cut off? Like the head? Would they heal from it?
@bellajones75474 жыл бұрын

Of course they were "mundane" and bland. They've been alive a long time. Most of us are bland after a long week

Yeah saw this on Netflix just for something to do. Had no idea of anything about the comic. It was pretty good action movie. I actually want to read the comics now for full detail. But while watching I kept thinking of Highlander. I hope there's a sequel.

I enjoyed the movie, but saw lots of similarities with the Matrix (Trinity) and even some similar lines. When Andy is shot and she says to Booker: "Not like this... not like this" is reminiscent of when Switch's last words, spoken while kneeling over the body of Apoc, were "Not like this... not like this."

I think that this would be great as a series because there is so much detail that they could have gone into and I also think then they could also extend the flashback sequences showing how they all found each other. Overall it was a pretty good movie but again I would love to see this in more detail as a series.

It would also be amazing if they created a sequel to this and I hope this is what they will do.

Actually the creators said in an interview (can't remember where but it's easy to find) that they changed Noriko from Japanese to Quyhn as Vietnamese under the request of the actress who played her, who is Vietnamese and not Japanese

Love this movie. It did try to stay true to the comic and the action was awesome. Looking forward to the next one. Hoping for the Infinity Saga giveaway!

I was greatly pleased with this one. I would really like to see this become something. I was just getting to know these characters and I found I liked them alot. I want to see more of them. The chemistry is great between them and they move well together. Plot kinda needs some work. But the team is Amazing!

Thank god i didnt read the book first haha you sounded really disappointed. I went in blind like completely not knowing anything about it, well i knew Theron was there, a gay couple didnt know whether they played a big part in it, and that there are immortals. Needless to say i was throughly entertained and had fun with the movie. Thought the pacing was nice, story has flaws but its fine, and i think having badass gay couple was awesome. i think they did a great job introducing the characters without too much exposition, i got attached to them.

I have not read the comics for which the film based. For me, it a refreshing take with some cool actions, and I thoroughly enjoyed it, however, due to the corny villain and some pacing issues which a lot of Netflix films suffered where it is not quite a big-screen treatment but above the small screen standards with exception to Marriage Story (the only Netflix Oscar winner film I have seen). With Extraction and now this, I am excited about what Netflix can bring to the table for significant action flicks on-demand.

I really wasn’t sure if the movie was going to be good but I gave it a shot because I thought CT did a good job with the action in Atomic Blonde. Pleasantly surprised. Andy was the best character. I do with the others were as interesting as they could be. Maybe they can be expanded upon if there is a sequel.
@482darkknight4 жыл бұрын
Some more time spent on the flashbacks (backstory) would give more gravitas to each of the other immortals. The buy in would be heavier and more consequential.

Unfortunately, the film was predictable. Within the first 20 minutes, I knew the entire story-line(including the last scene). The acting could be Nile's acting could have been better but, it isn't horrible. I hope the sequel will have a lot more action. I give it a B-(the airplane scene saved it from getting a C+ rating).
