Keep in mind these theories are really only able to describe general trends and aren't necessarily a perfect fit for every individual case. It's similar to correlations like gender and physical strength. Yes, the male bell curve is skewed slightly to the stronger end, but my friend, a female body builder, could lift as much as I can plus me with room to spare, and I'm roughly average for a male in that department. And my aerialist friends, male and female, are like a singular muscle from head to toe. Same goes with birth order. Does every single oldest child end up an overachiever? Not even close. But the overall curve might trend that way. As with nearly every trend it falls flat when applied to individuals.
@TerenceClark8 жыл бұрын
Incidentally, the same macro-micro issue applies to things like BMI. So-so to perhaps good for population trends, but terrible for health metrics for an individual.

I'm the youngest but I was valedictorian, top of my class every year, full scholarship, NY Times spelling bee champ, excel in science, dinner with politicians, everything you can name, 4.0 GPA in college. However, I'm rebellious and I question authority. My sister, who is 12 years older than I, is a conformist, obeys authority, works hard, but I cannot communicate with her on an intellectual level. Thus, we haven't spoken in a decade. But I do see your point. My significant other is the responsible and hard working one of her family and she's the oldest. Her younger siblings are all spoiled brats that play video games all day and satisfied with underachieving in life.

I'm the middle child and you are right...i do question authority i'm rebellious as fuck and all that..stuff. Mu brother who is only 2 YEARS older than me obeys authority works hard etc etc. but even though he does all of that you CAN say i'm smarter than him..the reason for that is i can take entertainment (TV shows,video games,etc) and mold it into knowledge. And that's why i'm the best at english in my house and the most "diverse"..my family is made up of 6 children..i'm the 4th but i kinda am the middle child if you think about it..all of my family have closed minds, They do not question anything, will not rebel in anyway and bring up kind of a Xenophobic vibe. resulting in me being the smartest.."smartness" isn't measured only by an IQ but how you take knowledge and ALOT of other things..the middle child is mostly the smartest so be happy you're one. How do i know? My family is big and my relatives who are also middle children are almost like me but were all unique in our own way.

Leila Acevedo-Dimaandal No it would not. My point is not that the older child or younger child is better or worse. My point is that your personal experience does not disprove or prove anything. This goes with any study. People think that because they are different from the general rule, that means that the study is wrong. Either that or they think the study is talking about everyone, when in reality, it is talking about the general rule.

I always just thought when two people get together they think, "I want my children to be perfect.," or at least close to it. Then they have the kid, relize how hard it is, and with the next kid they're like, "They don't have to be perfect." Then when the last one comes along they're like, "Screw it, kids will be kids." So if we stop thinking we want perfect children then the pattern will stop.

(I checked when my progress report came out. Could be better but i'm a Freshman, come on.) Not to mention last year we had this accelerated reader program where after we read a book we go in and take a test over it and we'd get points depending on how thick the book was. I always believed that the reason for this was that: The Parents where new so were more controlling and figuring out how to deal with the newborn as they go through stages of their life. Then (after using the oldest as the pre-established guinea pig) figured out what works and apply a laxer parenting on the 2nd sibling. Since there are now 2 siblings, the 3rd is usually the one receiving the (what I call) tired/lazy parenting. Depending on the difference in age, the youngest gets coddled because the older siblings pick up the responsibility. The oldest expected to be moulded to the parents liking (guinea pig as they are).

I'm actually curious the sample size used for some of these studies. Did they choose families of different ethnicities? From different countries? Income levels? There might be a "highly supported" correlation between birth order and personality types, but intelligence and degree of success? That might prove to be a more tenuous connection, or at least I certainly hope so. Also, the video only provides a very generalized summary of previous research done on this topic, so I'm guessing we haven't heard the full story - might explain why there are so many anomalies listed by people on this page, anyway.

Seriously though, nobody else in my school school does anything as useful as I do (they mostly just go to sports or games) I think I gained my knowledge that I have now mostly because of a little bit of an asbergers mindset that I have, which if you don't know its sort of like a less intense form of autism, but hey, there were kids with autism that went to college that were my age. You can look up asbergers, Bill Gates had it. And this video is almost absolutely accurate. I have 2 other little brothers. Both the middle and the youngest act just about as this video describes.
@blaketaylor111 жыл бұрын
I think we've been tougher on our oldest child, but not because we have a plan to make the child an example and deter bad behavior (as the video suggests). Rather it's because we've relaxed a bit and possible gotten a little more tired as we've had more children. Maybe it's that we've had to divide our efforts instead of all our efforts being concentrated on one child.

This seems largely in the realm of speculation and what her family is like. I have an older sister and I am the youngest. Yes I naturally have an easier time making friends, but that doesn't mean I am not every bit as smart as my sister. It's called genetics and not having crazy parents who were mean to my older sibling but let me get away with crap. That is NOT good parenting, it's called being lazy af and not caring about how your 3rd child will turn out. Anyways, just my thoughts.

I notice this with my brother and I. He is the oldest, and he definitely is the son who accomplished more in his life. I think this phenomenon has a lot to do with the fact that the eldest child was, at one point until the next child is born, the only child, and therefore he or she has the luxury of having a 100 percent of the parents, uncles, aunts, grandparents, and family friends' attention. As a result, the eldest gets more stimulation than a younger child, who comes into this world having to share his attention with an older sibling. This extra stimulation confers an advantage on the the older child in terms of mental development, self-confidence, and assertiveness. Furthermore, because of this extra attention, the older sibling will have a greater sense of belonging to the family and a greater obligation to succeed for the family's sake, and therefore he or she will be more ambitious.

my oldest sibling was the smallest, got the worst grades, was the shyest, most introverted, anti social person. So I call bull on this. I think most of these eldest stereotypes can differ between male/female first born and if the so called responsibility and stress factors are actually implemented on said oldest child. If said eldest is spoiled, coddled and not given tasks to be a leader than hence she/he won't fulfill that role and whoever is next will have to pick up the slack.

this only applies to some... not all. As she said its one piece of the pie. I also find it funny that most the comment section below says "I'm the smartest and not the oldest, I get better grades" but really what do grades show? Anyone who works hard can get them and not necessarily are they the "smartest" not to mention grades are kind of subjective as each teacher evaluates differently. Just a thought
@Vardaris8 жыл бұрын
Yep this is all true. I do not know if this leads to the older child to become smarter after all but it definitely leads to the older child becoming more independent and capable of dealing with hard times better. This is because the older child was treated in a much more strict way by the parents and because the older child never has a prototype that can follow everything s/he faces is a new one and has to carve his/her way through.

I really don't want to sound arrogant at all, but I do feel it's true. We're all smart, but from a standpoint of where I was, say, in 3rd grade vs where my siblings were in 3rd grade, I did do better in school. I'm also the most athletic. My little brother hates sports and my little sister... I wish there were a nicer way to say this, but she weighs about the same as me and I'm 13, she's 11. I also am much more independent and level-headed (although that hopefully changes with age, but my sister is more of a crybaby and my brother is a terrible sport). I've been able to solve a Rubik's Cube since I was 9 (not much of an accomplishment, I know). I guess it depends on the family, but I feel it applies to me. Once again, I really don't mean to brag, and this is just from my standpoint.

Generalisations are alright if you are talking about a generally observed trend or trait, based on scientific research. Notice the phrase 'tend to'. It's a pretty simple concept.
@skyler11410 жыл бұрын
***** this felt anecdotal because most things they had there described me in each 3 age groups if they really want to make these generalizations they need to do large amounts of varied analysis with controls, like with children who are separated by almost a generation; controlling for sibling effects on mid and last borns. Others are controlling for parental situation and interaction, educational interests, interaction with friends, and literacy.
@tSp28910 жыл бұрын
skyler114 Without looking at the paper, you don't know whether they *did* in fact do this. All I currently have to go on here is DNews' explanation of the results, which is intended to provoke a single talking point in a not-too-cognitively-troubling way. As I've said in another thread on this video, if this paper passed peer review, then you can be fairly sure that environmental factors were considered, and controls properly administered. Also, if you have a specific hypothesis, then your research will explore that hypothesis to test its veracity, and possible influences will be considered in the design and the discussion sections fo the paper. Actually in psychology it's a null hypothesis: you begin with the assumption that something is not the case and work out all the ways you could prove that it is not true, then attempt to test them.

My sis always looked up to me and since she saw me doing well, she did the same. Our personalities are extremely different. I'm assertive, outgoing & social; my sis is quiet, a bit shy and is sweet. I was a very mature kid (an old soul, some people say) and I did really well in school. My little sister got away with alot but I always loved her and, since I was 8 when she was born, I had gotten pretty much all the attention I needed so I didn't have any jealousy issues, but I was (and still am) highly stressed in all areas of life. Lol. We're very close now as adults. I can't believe she'll be 40 this year!! We still have lots of fun together. Hope my sis will think it's fun when I put up a huge sign in front of her house telling everyone she's 40!! Haha!

I'm an oldest, but I had a rebellious phase in high school so I did terrible in school. I also joined the military (reserves) after graduation in order to do something "right" and I having gone through Basic Training at Ft. Benning, Home of the Infantry, I felt like I've accomplished one of the best things ever in my life at that time. I continued to do bad in college for a year. Also, having chosen the reserves, I felt bad about not going active duty, and being all I could be instead, like airborne infantry, rangers, special forces, etc, which you hear quite a bit about in the Army - you actually sing cadences about them. So one day I decided to "be all I could be" in academics, choosing a tough major such as Physics, and started working really hard in my studies - essentially becoming an A student. So perhaps being an oldest son did mean my parents wanted me to be the one to set the example, but that changes as you go out into the world and people don't treat you the same way your parents did. Instead, you'll have other influences - your boss, your peers, your teachers, etc. They'll treat you based on your experience, their perception of you, and their ability/rank with respect to yours. You'll simply have to have other things motivating you besides your parents' expectations, like watching the scene in The Gladiator where Russel Crowe slays all of his opposition flawlessly like "bitches, I'm a former roman army general and this is what I did for a living" and then throws his sword into the audience and yells "ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED? ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED? IS THIS NOT WHY YOU'RE HERE?"

Just because he is rebellious, or doesn't get good grades, does not mean he doesn't fit with the description. Grades really do not show IQ: anyone can memorize information; and I too am a bit rebellious because of the stress my parents put on me all of the time.
@DumbDesign10 жыл бұрын
Well, since these are the results of a specific wide-spread parenting style, and not anything biological, then it is no surprise we won't observe this pattern in EVERY family because not all parents follow this parenting style. It is true, tho, that grades in school are not necessarily indicative or IQ, but the host in the video DID specifically say the older brother "tends to be best in school". That is because parents put more pressure on the older sibling to do better in school, that was the point of the video. She never mentioned IQ. Also, it said the younger sibling tends to "call attention to him/herself" and that could not be more wrong when it comes to describing me.
@liezlbredenkamp422810 жыл бұрын
I think the rebelliousness comes from feeling inferior to your younger sibling it sometimes happens when the parents are too over protective of the younger sibling (my sister was very sickly when she was little). So she got away with murder because she was "weaker". It burned me up because I got excellent grades in primary school and it wasn't recognised because little sis was sick. Sooooo in high school I became rebellious.

I kinda agree with some since it doesn't matter if its the 1st, 2nd, nor 3rd when it comes to what "they tend to become" (again the word tend to doesn't mean it always happen just sometimes or often) it is just the way kids grow or become depends on how their "parents raise them". So the vid is not all over wrong nor did those who commented. We just missed a mark right here..
