When you were discussing how many jobs each of you has had in this episode, it reminded me of the very first time I ever watched with Dave. So I'm not the person you were talking about who fences but I have fenced for a little over ten years and comparing it to melee is pretty accurate in general. Part of the reason that it doesn't feel super exciting is because the coverage of it is terrible. Whoever is operating the cameras doesn't know how fencing works so it's harder to capture all of the interesting parts. On top of that the rules are really confusing because there are three different weapons which have drastically different rules so it's hard for people who don't fencing to understand the rules, as well as the fact that the judges who run the bout only speak in French, and a lot of the time you can't even hear them anyways. Also, fencing goes from two people playing the safest neutral possible (unless its saber) to super fast movements that are basically impossible for people to see even if you're practiced in fencing. I really love fencing but there are a lot of things holding it back from being really popular.

My dad has all kinds of spinal fuck ups from playing football for years, and a couple surgeries to remove tumors on it, which is VERY risky. When I lived with my parents I’d sometimes walk into the living room and he’d just be laying on the floor, watching tv with a pillow under his head to see it, and would lie like that for hours. He said it helped a lot with the pain. I’ve got chronic pain all over and I’ve done it too, and it truly does feel great when my shit is feeling especially bad. 😭

The Olympic Walking rules are even more absurd than explained in the podcast: You SHOULD have always one foot touching the ground BUT it is only penalised IF a judge can tell during the race in realtime. No slow-mo used. Judges are posted all along the 20 km race and if a "walker" receives 3 red cards he gets a time penalty and with 4 he's out... This makes the enforcement of penalties, as you would expect, highly subjective. Might be the reason why it's a white man's sport 🏃🏻😔

i know this isnt important lol but just in case anyone is wondering, "groom" actually should be "goom", and that's not a joke, that actually is the etymology. idk where the r came from. but goom meant man, it's actually etymologically related to the latin word "homo", as in "homo sapiens". the "homo" that means "same" is different though, that's greek, not latin. etymology is hard. anyway groom just means "guy". groom then was used to mean like a servant, the dictionary entry i found says "a person who looks after horses". the verb, "to groom" comes from that meaning, a groom (servant) "grooms" the horses, as in, brushes them and stuff. and THAT'S where "groom" meaning "to groom a minor" comes from, from the brushing an animal meaning. that's creepy. hate that. don't enjoy that. but anyway yeah "groom" meaning "soon to be husband" came first, and "groom" as a verb came about really indirectly, which i didn't know before i started writing this comment. i thought the two words were completely unrelated, but no, apparently there is a connection, it just goes in an opposite way i guess. idk why im commenting this on a Yard episode. hopefully someone reading this found this interesting

Ludwig is correct on speedclimbing. The route has been unchanged since like 2013 or some shit like that. There's even a hold that is way off the side that is never used but it HAS to be there. The only way speedclimbing is kinda cool is that it is like speedrunning and there's literally a skip called the tomoa skip, which is hype.
