It's crazy how throughout the lifetime of this podcast Ludwig and Slime switched sides on whether the podcast counts as them hanging out

Papaplatte and BastiGHG didn't "pick up" Ludwig's challenge and changed it to a "Mickey Mouse Challenge", they did a completely different thing and it just so happens that Ludwig was doing his challenge around the same time. Their challenge had a different concept which has been established on Twitch in Germany for several years.

Desert bus for hope is done by a Canadian content creation group called LoadingReadyRun that has done thousands of hours of sketch comedy and has a large history in the content creation game, Unskippable being one that surprised me. They also have a large following in the Magic the Gathering community and has done a lot of content focused around that. They run desert bus for hope every year and have raised multiple millions of dollars for a variety of charities. Having taken one look at the mega64 guys, I can see why Slime got them confused.

I just realized from this episode that the Melee CrimsonBlur and the Slay the Spire CrimsonBlur are the same person. That's wild. Anyways, to explain whether or not CrimsonBlur had a mickey record: in short, he didn't. CrimsonBlur held the unequalled record in the most popular and important category, alternating A20 Heart winstreaks. In other words, he was the first to win 10 games in a row alternating characters doing the game's hardest challenge on its highest difficulty. Extending these streaks is the main accomplishment in the game for professional players, though close behind are single-character A20 Heart winstreaks (which are sort of the analogue of an individual level speedrun). However, this record has been long broken (he held it 3 years ago). It's still impressive, and a mark probably only a few dozen people could match, but he's not the best in any category anymore as far as I know.
@peepopog42793 ай бұрын
Interesting, thanks for the info! Got into STS somewhat recently, but been a melee head for a long time, and had no idea Blur played STS or was that cracked. 10 alternating A20H is definitely super respectable even today. For others' reference if interested, the record right now for this category is 20 by Baalorlord, though another top player Xecnar just got 19 a week ago. Xecnar holds the individual records for winstreaks (so without rotating) on 2 of the 4 characters, and his run was ended on one of those, which just further shows how brutal it is. Though I will say some of the top streamers/players of the game (like Xecnar) prefer to focus on overall win-rate with the philosophy that doing so will naturally cause long streaks to appear over time.

I really loved the discussion about speedruns this ep. I've spent probably thousands of hours grinding button mashing and a year ago I finally became the fastest in the world and about 4-5 months ago I've picked it back up and I've gotten some crazy crazy scores that I can only truly understand the extent of because button mashing is such a dead skill to grind. It's the one thing I've found in this world that I truly enjoy and can grind and it's a huge part of my life but the whole it's not useful and shit part really can get to me. The biggest problem is that I do deep down want to be known for what I do because I'm proud of it and it does kinda suck being compared to Ludwig because I was just to late to the scene, silverbawxer got his recognition by association but I was just to young to latch on and know I'm kinda stranded doing this thing I love so much and not much to show for it but scores nobody knows about. Idk great episode I'll probably be coming back to this one in specific a bunch just for this conversation

hi speedrunner here, and it has changed my life a lot actually. made me better at focusing, connected me to a great network of people, and given me way more self confidence. i dont think we do it for nothing, its fun and thats all that matters! as for the real grinders, yeah you might not get Careers out of it, but you can take a lot of the skills of them to the real world. also a LOT of speedrunners do *not* grind 5+ hours. they just practice and run and at the top level youre good enough to not need the constant practice and playtime as long as youre consistent. lud is right when he says the portion of games that need that is small

I think it’s hilarious at the yard friend group was able so passive aggressively create a session where they tell a story about one of their recent activities and have that snatched by another member of the podcast and told so unbelievably inaccurate, but in a sense of shooting down the person who’s being talked about in adding anything until they’ve completely finished whatever bullshit they just created. It’s so funny to listen to, I love it

There is a massive Speedrunner -> Game developer pipeline that I think Nick isn't seeing. Once speedrunners get to a high enough level, the only way to improve is to understand the code of the game. I myself became a game developer because of this, I learned coding in order to break records. A LOT of speedrunners I know became very prolific coders for this same reason.

I think this is one of my favorite/most interesting episodes, the topic of speed running and hobbies in general is genuinely an interesting thing to think about, I always feel terrible about things that I'm doing for fun but I think ultimately that can be a form of self harm that can lead to a cycle of depression and make things unenjoyable but I still do them because ultimately they're fun and if we didn't do those things I don't think you'd really be living the human experience.

As a speedrunner fan, idk I think a lot goes into it. Being able to perform under pressure, and depending on the game the amount of optimization and creativity for developing routing strats is impressive. Especially if it involves discovering glitches and whatnot there’s a lot of overlap with game dev work, or modding, etc etc. Seems just as meaningful as dumping hundreds of hours into FPS tourneys I really just watch Zelda speedruns, so maybe it’s different for other games 🤷♀️
