I agree with you wholeheartedly. This ceremony brought back my interest in French history, philosophy, cinema and culture. It was chaotic, provocative and at the same time deeply philosophical and symbolic and true testament to the contributions France has made to the world. My top picks were Gojira's epic performance, Celine Dion and the Floating Cauldron, probably the best cauldron away given its symbolism. Also, the non-stadium concept made it the most interesting ceremony, there was always the tension of which building they'll go to next on where the hooded character would be now. Truly a best of both worlds!

The acts were great but the way they filmed it made it feel slow and static to eratic and chaotic. Celine absolutely saved everything for me. It was very touching. Would love more content like this.

I have a close relative that worked in the production and it was very bad for everyone. The main producers hired a company to do real-time highlights “with AI” (whatever that means tbf lol) to be able to cut staff and it showed. Part of the production team was spread across France working remotely. Same thing during the actual games where there were numerous glitches with automatic close ups that didn’t make sense etc. At the end of the day they cut a lot on staff :-/ The difference between ESC and the Opening/Closing ceremonies is indeed gigantic

i'd like to mention Aya Nakamura's performance, it was such a great one in so many ways. first of all, you have to know that despite her being one of the biggest french artists nowadays, she still got insulted by a certain part of people (propably racists let's be real) when she was announced because "sHe DoEsN't SpeAk FrEnCh". yes, she uses slang in her songs, but it obviously doesn't make her less french like??? so the fact that she still performed and did a great job warmed my heart personally. also, little touch of humor: she started her permormance by coming out of the Institute of French Academy (that's the literal translation, i'm not sure that's how you'd actually call it in english lol) aka the building that symbolizes the French language. and while she sings, at some point she also says "i'd better go choose my vocabulary to please you in Molière's language". that's like giving a middle finger to anyone that criticized her about not speaking french enough i love the sass of it.

And I really liked the way she (and her crew) paid respect to the Garde Républicaine with the military salute at the end of the song. The Garde Républicaine fully played the game as well as they danced and sang with her. Mutual respect at its best! A big shout out to them!
@romanlelek28083 ай бұрын
@@herveraim Actually French people don't see it that way. Garde Républicaine is highly respected and don't do this kind of show. Respect or not, it was similar to seeing dancing cardinals or something like that. One salute doesn't change that.
@herveraim3 ай бұрын
@@romanlelek2808 "One salute doesn't change that" Well, au contraire! When you bridge two different worlds as far apart as pop music and the military forces, literally on a bridge by the way, everyone has to meet each other halfway (and that's what they literally did in the middle of "Pont des Arts"). The salute from Aya and her dancers and the dancing and singing from the Garde Républicaine are just that: a meeting point and a gathering place where everyone acknowledges the other. This was a powerful and brilliant blend of modernity and immutability with a high symbolic value. And as respected as the Garde Républicaine might be, I don't see how this show would have been disrespectful and/or detrimental to them in any respect (except if you belong to the far right). "Garde Républicaine is highly respected and don't do this kind of show". Well, they do now!

Sadly, all the production/camera setting were not done by the French realization team. It was managed by the IOC and the French had no power about it. There's a lot of interview of nicolas jolly who say it was good but "a lot of things was missed by the cameras". Also, about the "made for tv/public", 95% of the people who attended the ceremony were pissed because they didn't saw anything for 3 hours. Absolutely nothing was made for them. (Which is scandalous given the prices) But that's good if the main things "bad" about the ceremony is that, and the weather. I wondered how others country received it 🥰

Indeed, it's the IOC team that chose Simon Staffurth (a Briton) as director of the show. Act of sabotage from the Brits who still believe their 2012 opening ceremony was the best ever and wanted to make sure it stayed so? 🤣🤣🤣 It didn't work actually!

The really interesting thing about the ceremony is that it was a HUGE success in France itself. A poll the next day by Le Monde found that 86% of French viewers thought the ceremony was a success, and considering you can’t get 86% of French people to agree on anything these days, that’s mightily impressive. It really comes down to the fact that French people have such a unique culture that gives them different expectations from the rest of the world when it comes to TV and the media. TV serves a very different purpose in France to the UK, it’s not a celebrated industry - in fact, Thomas Jolly, the artistic director, is a theatre company leader whose last project was a play called H6R3, which is based on Henry VI and Richard III, and lasts 24 HOURS (and you thought Sanremo was a slog). A theatre director will have different priorities to a director used to working for TV (or cinema, for that matter, like Danny Boyle in 2012). Theatre, books and cinema always take priority over TV in the French cultural canon, to the point where half of France’s TV is just people promoting their books etc. I remember when I lived in France coming from the UK, where TV is a hugely respected national industry, the whole low-fi, “dinner theatre” aspect of French TV used to baffle me and make me laugh in equal measure. When I run ratings at work for, say, The Voice France, the show will be listed as 3 hours long, but then you see there’s an hour’s break in the middle, because they’ve decided to, I dunno, cut to a panel discussion about planning laws in Versailles in front of a live studio audience. In primetime. And you just play along with it. Hilariously, during the Olympics, France Télévisions’ nightly review show was a dinner theatre-style studio panel show called “Quels Jeux !”, and Léon Marchand caused controversy when he refused to be on it bc he didn’t like the vibe. Also, shoutout to stellar broadcasters Andrew Cotter and Hazel Irvine from the BBC, who did a brilliant job making sense of the 4-hour show for us, even though THEY KNEW AS LITTLE AS WE DID because there was NO DRESS REHEARSAL, in the PISSING RAIN, with NO UMBRELLAS (bc they’d be blocking the view of the horse). So many broadcasters didn’t recognise Teddy Riner and Marie-Josée Pérec, who were lighting the cauldron, but Cotter did it with numb fingers and toes. And yes, it took us all a good few minutes to recognise a 60-something Nadia Comaneci, so we’ll give him that. Graham Norton could never! 😂

I was okay with the inclusion of Lady Gaga for two reasons: 1. She clearly loves and respects French culture, and performed well. Also, while she is very popular in the U.S., for much of her career she has also dealt with a lot of haters, primarily for being gay friendly and unapologetic for her fashion and performances. 2. She is an international icon, as is Celine Dion. Since the vast majority of the performances were from French artists, I enjoyed them all. Surprised you did mention Slimane and Lara Fabian, which was my favorite performance.

TY so much! You explained stuff that totally lost me. I'm 71--losing modern culture at an ever-increasing pace. I lost in Teresa watching boats on the Seine--I love when athletes enter the venue both at Opening and at Closing Ceremonies--they are rigidly full of expectations and national identity at the start and by the end, they have friends from many other countries, have developed bonds, learned so much about each other, and have developed an entirely new identity with their fellow athletes as Olympians! This metamorphoses is what addicts me to the Games. I love swimming, diving, beach volleyball, gymnastics, and lots of others--miss some entirely every time but find I love others too--fencing?! But the Opening and Closing once the athletes are introduced is what gets me every 2 years now. Your analysis was fascinating--I has no idea what most of it was about. Network TV sucks when they hire these newly rich TV personalities who have nothing to offer but where they went now they are rich world travelers. Wish they find some actually knowledgeable people--like you? People who understand France, maybe? I agree about the dancing--could not see a thing from a distance and close-up was just awful. Meaningless. The boats went on forever, so a wonderful event became background, muted, me on my computer... I get motion sickness, so my time watching boats has to be limited anyway as queasiness sets in. I never noticed the Feast, but Lady Gaga turned me off by then. Probably last part I paid full attention to. You made a great point--the countries were all pulled apart to be on boats, and they lost me--when they march into the venue, it's fast, exciting! We can see their Olympic teams. But this might have been cool for 10 boats, as it went on and on and on and on and on...I looked for something else to do/watch/think/about. What clearly was so exciting to them was boring to me! 1st time ever. I never saw their Olympic flame either. I followed it as it came to L.A. in 1984--watched OJ and his wife, SIL, RUN up the street I lived on (2 blocks from there--we CRAWLED up that damn incline from the beach!--they RAN it. He had thighs the size of oak trees. So anyway, I always loved different countries takes on bringing the flame to their games. But I missed it in France--nothing at the start of the ceremonies, and I'd lost interest, fell asleep or something by the time they zeroed in on it in Paris. Sad. As for the games, I loved beach volleyball at the Eiffel Tower! Felt sorry for the athletes in the 90s...you play beach volleyball so it's a bit cooler than asphalt inland volleyball. They could have played at the beach...maybe the last games leading to medals? Diving shots missed some of the cameras I'd accustomed to. We were nearly under divers, ok, but I liked the old shots from the stands. Good swimming coverage. Did not like what they did with river sports--rowing and the rest--I missed most of it now that they jumble everything. 5 minutes ofd this, 2 minutes of that, 17 minutes of something else. Why not air discrete competitions?

Then, many of social media have proclaimed it as antichristian, pagan, satanic, filled with bad omens and announcement of apocalypse (lady on pale horse as one of the for horsemen) etc. I think that was exaggeration. What you missed in your video: 1. Croissant lady 2. Performers threaten to strike before opening ceremony and their (visibly) bad performances during (some of commentators even on HBO compared it to school play). 3. Patrouille de France Air show missed by director (among other things like acrobatics by Paris firefighters) 4. Snoop Dogg 5. Absolutely useless commentary by HBO during their broadcast (should be said it wasnt probably their fault... from what I know, our national TV got list of performers from organizers until DURING broadcast... and it was listed alphabetically). 6. Imagine has been sung during opening and closing ceremonies a few times in last 18 years... it's now a little bit like tradition. 7. Aya Nakamura not even trying to properly lip sync or even dance (military men in her background were more interesting and funnier than her). 8. Prerecorded scene of three people in library... ending in threesome. 9. Changing South Korea for North Korea by announcers. 10. Half the ceremony taking place on one bridge and pont... not entirely entertaining for visitors (also the boat ride was 6 km long, so everything what spectators saw was just... boats. Full of people. The French were in charge of the artistic creation only. The French artistic director also complained that the editors missed key parts of the shows, making weird cuts to nonsense images

This was so great Gabe! I love hearing your opinions about pretty much anything. Also, I’ve been meaning to thank you for introducing us to En Forma by LOCO BOOMBOX! I added it to my regular Eurovision playlist and every time it comes up it cracks me up, I can’t help it… so much joy 🫶🏽

As a British person I can’t help but compare all opening ceremonies with London’s opening ceremony. And I’m not sure any opening ceremony will be able to beat Mr Bean playing Chariots of Fire, the entire Industrial Revolution section, and them pretending the Queen jumped out of a helicopter 😅
