Superb interview! Love to hear about Bro. Stallings’ relationships. BAMA was blessed to have had him; what an impact he made with the young men he mentored. His “dash” is marked by integrity and love for another.

I remember listening to him call the Birmingham Bulls in the WHA in the mid 70s. That is why he came to Alabama to call Hockey. That Bulls group held the record for penalties for years until someone recently broke it. One of the Hanson brothers from Slapshot was on then team. The last year the Bulls decided to try and build a team instead of be goons and the NHL merged and took 4 WHA Teams, (Edmonton being one) Birmingham disbanded and they had 3 future NHL Hall of Famers on that team. LOL.

I remember post the Shula firing, when Alabama was in the midst of the search for a new coach, Gene Stallings offering to take over the position until Alabama found the right guy. Coach Stallings said he would be happy to do it while on The Paul Finebaum show. It was clear how much love and respect he continued to have for the program and he could not stand seeing Bama not being at the top of college football. Mean Gene, in my opinion, was the beginning of the next era of Alabama dominance. Roll Tide.

Yeah, I love how Eli Gold just doesn't act like a normal news person. And doesn't ask Coaches the tough questions. He knows his place & he stays in his place and I think that is very smart, very human & he just knows that there are things that he doesn't need to know in order to do his job. What a jewel of a human being!

Not a bad podcast guys. Fairly interesting. I was so busy during those years I didn't have a chance to be much of an Alabama fan. The last 2 years of Bear Bryant's career up until Gene Stallings was coach I didn't have a chance to watch many games. When Bama beat Miami in the Sugar Bowl I just happened to be at a friend's house. And he had a couple of buddies show up and they were ALL Miami fans. And I hadn't seen Alabama play any games that year. But I thought about Gene Stallings at Texas A&M beating Alabama in the Cotton Bowl and how he hugged Bear Bryant after the game. And when I did pride welled up in me & I told the 3 Miami fans in the room "Ya'll gonna have a bad night! Cuz Alabama is about to put a whooping on Miami!" And they said "Oh yeah? Well put your money where you're mouth is." And I said "OK, normally I don't bet more than a dollar on anything. But I'll bet each of you $5 a piece that Bama wins." So I walked away with $15. For some reason I felt like if I bet anymore than that Alabama would lose. But it was really fun watching that game & their frustration at Miami only scoring on a kick return but NEVER scoring an offensive TD. Especially when Teague ran dude down & took the ball away from dude! I laughed so hard when that happened! My Mom video taped the game and we watched that play over & over. To this day I believe that to be one of the greatest defensive moments in College Football. Until Saban held LSU to there own side of the field up until the fourth quarter that was my favorite defensive game! Oh, & unless I'm mistaken, Bill Curry recruited most of the guys Gene Stallings won that Natty by coaching. My Mom said that Bill Curry would have been a really great Coach if the Bama alumni had left him alone long enough to get his program up to full potential!

I hope that Alabama will bring back Coach Shula/family back to T Town to be honored in a way that says to the Shula you are forever a part of the Bama family and, be once again come to T Town to be with all of us because you were one of the great quarterbacks at Bama as I remember the comeback against Georgia and, the Auburn game as well. It is the right thing to do for Coach Shula/family by the football powers that be at Bama. Bring Coach Shula back home to be with us once again. Roll Tide. I have ALWAYS said Mike Shula came into the worst situation possible. Bama had been hammered by sanctions just this side of the death penalty. I heard constantly from Auburn, UT, LSU, Ms State, Arkie, whatever fans boast about owning Bama during that time. Knute Rockne, Bud Wilkinson, Bear Bryant, Jimmy Johnson or Jesus Christ wouldn't have won at Bama during that time. Once the horrific sanctions were over Bama was gonna start beating some teams. Would any coach have won at Sabans rate, probably not but Auburn would not have won 4 straight, UT would not have been 3-1 against Bama, LSU would not have been 4-0, state would not have been 2-2 and Arkie would not have been 3-1 against Bama had Bama not been playing with one hand tied behind their back. Fans of other schools will NEVER admit this and will pound their chest over beating 59 scholarshipped players that nobody wanted but those of us that know the truth know Bama would have had some wins in there that didn't happen.
