I have read the book and can thoroughly recommend it. I completely agree with your comment 'if we hold other industries accountable for telling untruths why not the perfume industry'. To me it's incredible that a perfumer who creates a scent is not automatically named and credited on the bottle. I am delighted to see some brands now doing this e.g Frederic Malle, Essentiel Parfums. It should be compulsory in my opinion.

Hey Sam , I’m glad to see that you are back healthy and looking good ❤️, thank you for sharing your insight of this book , I have personally never owned any Creed perfumes , but was aware of the hype . Even in store when I went trying the perfumes all the sales people were telling the same stories . Good to see that someone had the courage to speak up against such a vicious marketing mascarade.

I have read the book and found it really insightful. It was so interesting to hear a bit about the people like creative directors and those people within brands who push forward with daring fragrances for the mainstream - although these types seem to be sadly lacking today.

Thanks for posting this! It ticks off 2 boxes - perfumery and investigative journalism. Fascinating. Also- I think perfumers should be compensated and credited for their work. I can’t imagine being an artist and spending so much time and creative energy on something and then someone else taking the credit. It just seems wrong ethically.

Love this as always. Hope we might get some spring videos again. Curious what you're reaching for. I love very unisex floral fragrances, but I'm struggling to pick what to check out next. For reference, my most reached for fragrances are Geranium Odorata by Diptyque, Neroli & Basil from Joe Malone, and Santal Royal from Guerlain (I know many might not call it a floral, but there is just so much rose). I love the scent of many flowers, especially Jasmine and Lilac. Curious if you have any recs in terms of very unisex scents like that for spring. I also enjoy fragrances that are an eau de parfum concentration and have good sillage and longevity (which the Diptyque and Joe Malone do not have)

I’ve heard of this book but haven’t read it (think I should) but hearing this, I’m not surprised. I’ve assumed this kind of dishonesty was the case as with many other industries. When I first started into the niche world especially, I wanted to believe the way these companies portrayed themselves, but it just seemed “too good to be true” (not to say this about ALL brands). My perfume purchases are based on whether I love the scent; anything else really doesn’t matter to me because I don’t trust any of them anyway *shrug* 😬

Thank you Sam, I'll check this book! A relevant comment though, comes from perfumer Victoria Frolova (wonderful Bois de Jasmin blog, which sadly has stopped) saying: perfumers are OK with not getting acknowledged for their perfumes by the public, media etc. That's how it works and Frederic Malle is an exception, not the rule. They are not disappointed by it. What is frustrating for perfumers is when they get deceived by their own people. When in the perfume industry a perfumer creates a new fragrance and the head perfumer hydes the creator from everyone inside the company and takes full credit for the creation himself. So, a perfumer loses recognition in the industry and job opportunities. The important thing for perfumers is not fame and recognition by the public but recognition in the field of work, which does not happen always and is very unfair

I'm fascinated by the idea that it takes two to lie: One to lie and another to believe. If a brand never admits that something is either fact or fiction and relies on public assumption...is there an ethical grey area? If a brand uses ethical labour to make an inferior pair of pants that cost more than a better quality pair made using forced labour...which would you buy? Definitely enjoyed the book and looking forward to a sequel. Especially if Gabe finds it more difficult to acquire new material. It's 100 billion dollar/year industry. Stuff goes on. No doubt about it. 😄
@MyWorldofFragrance2 жыл бұрын
Personally, I would think most consumers would choose the ethical route if it were labeled clearly, but then again, who knows... I didn't realize there would be a sequel. 🌹Xo Sam

@@MyWorldofFragrance Yeah, Gabe mentioned on a livestream or two that he had enough material for another book, but it would need a theme to bring all the bits together. Likely it will revolve around the life of a perfumer in the industry? Just a guess.

Thank you, I’m definitely picking up this book. Fragrance is fragrance. If the wearer loves and feels good wearing it, it shouldn’t really matter how much or how little it costs. This is probably why I tend to like indie, unusual and heritage houses...they just quietly stay on their lane and do what they do best. You can always see a pattern emerging with designer brands releasing new fragrances like pancakes- and it just becomes one big trend bandwagon. Creativity and uniqueness just goes out of the window just to crowd please and cash grab. I’ve known that the mark-up is high on fragrances because of marketing, brand endorsements and mostly profit. Very sad that the perfumers (rightful intellectual property owners of the work) doesn’t necessarily get the recognition. Hopefully certain brands like Frederic Malle and Zoologist etc change this for good.

Great you're back 😊 non of the book surprises me. And I almost feel non of us should be surprised by a lot of the big brands we maybe get lost in seeing it as Art and want to buy into them "stories" it's damn good marketing. Yea its dishonest but not a shock. Creed are clearly the Boney M of fragcom 🤣 tho definitely not the only ones. We all know my favourite brand the whole idea of creating beauty and luxury that lasts forever... Then EL buy them and yea 🤣🤣 that ethos was quick out the window for a few million pounds, are we surprised really? And sadly the artists, the perfumers get no credit, in most cases no recognition... Like Christopher Wren didn't build St Paul's did he but he's the only name ascociated with all that magnificent beauty... Quite a ramble 🤣 you know me I'm so cynical none of the shadyness, dishonesty and nonsense surprises me. And I guess the only thing that matters is if we love what we smell. And price seems to demand prestige like with so many industries but we all know it's an idea, a facade we let ourselves be drawn into. I doubt there's much difference in reality between the ingredients of the guy who charges £500-£1000s and the modest French House charging £100 or so but its how we're wired to think
@MyWorldofFragrance2 жыл бұрын
Your cynicism isn't unfounded, Jon. Your ramble makes complete sense. Thanks for watching 🌹Xo Sam

My thoughts exactly. And that's why I rarely buy anything around / above 200 and I will most likely wait to find it second hand. Darn nichelux brands have taken over the perfume market and bombarded social media and I am SO disenchanted with the industry ... I bought a Xerjoff because after watching the vid of a reviewer I got the "it's going to be discontinued" anxiety and bah....it smells nice but, as I knew deep down, not worth the cash (last vid I watch from that KZbin BC she is always spilling so much hype). I got another one second hand very heavily discounted and the same.. not worth it even for the price I payed, which was around 50% less. I have sworn that I won't get any more xerjoff, Roja, Marly unless I find them 2d and at a ridiculous price. I am not interested in bling bling luxury, which is what these (as I personally call them) bullshit brands sell.... Time to move on to smaller more obscure houses hidden somewhere and to classics, which you can find really cheap nowadays
@scentedsnowdrops2 жыл бұрын
@@dhoakohime yes you've said it well there. It's the idea we buy into. And yea some are really lovely and some can really capture us but are they truly any better than a smaller brand? Or a designer brand? "niche" to me used to mean creative, daring and something more... Nowadays it's generally a mass appealing version of a designer or highly popular DNA and it's a shame
@dhoakohime2 жыл бұрын
@@scentedsnowdrops Exactly!! Get some old Annick Goutal or some old Serge Lutens! Wow!! Those were some darn good niche perfumes. Goutals more natural and romantic scents, SL daring, different, well crafted. But both very ,distinctive and unique. Both brands completely forgotten ...noone talks about them anymore, simply because they are cheaper and easy to find. And what's worse...they have increased their prices to try to jump to this nichelux flood that sells the idea of good perfumery just by inflating the price "so it surely Is good". Because otherwise nobody buys them!! "Bah..a mere Serge Lutens! So not bijou! So pedestrian!" . We have internalised so much their game! The scene has changed SO much in the last 6 years more or less....prices getting completely out of hand, 1009 new releases per minute, 4400 discontinuations per hour, limited editions.... Anything and everything to milk the cow... The complete opposite of what we consider niche, because I agree 100% with you. Check out papillon parfums (I am sure you already know the brand 😀). Gorgeous compositions and well priced (for todays prices... In the expensive side back then)
