It’s about an affair…. She’s telling the story from the side of the mistress. Thats why she doesn’t want anyone to know where she’s going at the beginning. And then she talks about leaving the perfume on the shelf so she doesn’t leave any scent behind. They lie a million little times. All of the lies that go along with an affair. She says she’d ruin herself a million times to be with him. Even though she knows it’s wrong.

Illicit Affairs is one of my all-time favourite songs of her. Im happy you reacted to it and that you liked it. I remember the first time I listened to it and brushed it aside. Only later, when I truly listened to the lyrics, I fell in love with it.

To those who don't know Taylor had to cancel 3 of her shows in Vienna and Austria, 2 guys were going to bomb the stadium while she was performing, they have the 2 guys, but they think there might be a 3rd guy involved. These are very scary times we live in.

I don’t think this is fictional, at least not completely. She said the thing about the songs on this album being stories but she was still with Joe at the time, so it makes sense for her to say it’s fictional. I think TTPD puts all of it in a new light. If you re-listen through the TTPD lens, so to speak, everything makes a lot more sense and feels a lot more real. She really did swirl Matty into all her poems 😭

There's a fair bit of discussion on this one, with people wondering if she's saying she really cheated on anyone and others positing that it's a fictional character used to explore the emotions of a situation she hasn't been in (or has, but playing a different part). Relationships are tricky to write honestly because they are so subjective, so it's hard to write the "truth." I like that she explores all of the nuances in her writing, including trying to use her empathy to write from other points of view. This is not her only song about a complicated or non-traditional relationship. Maybe it helps her to deal with things in her own life that hurt her or don't make sense. Maybe she really did live this, but hasn't sorted out her feelings enough yet to claim her truth on the subject. Maybe she was a bystander or victim or perpetrator in the whole thing. We may never know. For now, let's say fiction and give her some grace until she's ready to confirm or deny. Either way, it's pretty brilliant writing, to paint the story and make us feel something about the characters in such a short time. Even if some of us end it with sympathy and questions and others with judgement. That's the power of great writing. We might not make the same choices or live through the same situations, but i think many of us have felt something more or different than we expected for at least one of the characters by the end of the song. Wow! That takes talent. Ever tried to change someone's mind with a song? It's not easy, except if you're Taylor Swift, apparently.😊

She would ruin herself a million times over because she can see the colors and speak the language only with him. I had a love like that, where no one before him and no one after him could ever make me feel the way i felt when i was with him. Those feelings are the colors and secret language. And he knows damn well, she woukd ruin herself a million little times to be able to feel that way with him. Ugh its so deep. I really enjoy seeing people hear some of her lyrics for the 1st time. And you are one of the few that catches the depth the 1st time around, i appreciate that!

I can not believe that the one she does in the Eras Tour came from this song. It’s my best part of the Eras Tour. I think of it as the girl yelling at James because he chose Betty!!
We really be interpreting her lyrics like we do the bible 😂

this is most likely about her ex Joe whenever they where out in public they'd always have there faces covered and sometimes even wore disguise. Not like out boy Trav who isn't afraid of being seen with her

Have u done the project or how did it end yet ?? I need to see how u react to it lol
For some context there is a fictional love triangle on this album between James, Betty and Augustine. Basically James cheated on Betty/ they “were on a break”situation with Augustine (who I think is speaking in this song) Betty is heart broken but knows he will come back to her on “cardigan” and he does on “Betty” but that leaves Augustine to be left with only the memories on “August” and “illicit affairs” or at least that’s how I interpret it, the lore on this album is crazy lol
