As an addendum I also ordered a grip for my 5D MK IV, a DSLR, which is going to be my back up eclipse camera.

The battery life in mirrorless is substantially worse than in DSLR, so this is probably a wise backup plan.

I totally agree about the grip. I took my R6 mkII one step farther and got The Small Rig Cage for The BG-10 Battery It's gorgeous and it looks Menacing, but still functionable.

I am still learning photography, not pro yet (but hopefully one day). The battery grip has seemed like a nice idea, if anything, to extend my R6m2's battery life, but seemed a nicety. Well, last Saturday I took a bunch of concert photos, and it shocked me how quickly the battery wore down. While I still had above 25% when going home, that much drop in under 4 hours blew my mind. Now, the extra life seems necessary. Funny how this video crossed my timeline right after the weekend. Excellent work!!

That's part of the reason I got the grip too... battery life is not like on my DSLRs

This is so en point!! And I wasn't even looking to dive into this topic. I'm worried about a high volume school photo shoot I have coming up because I'm realising that the batteries on the R6 don't last very long - especially when tethered. The battery grip is def something to look at purchasing soon - but so pricey it will have to wait some!!
@PeteCocoPhoto
@PeteCocoPhoto 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks, M J! Hopefully they will release a third party grip which is much more affordable. Part of the issue is that the R5 sometimes doesn't want to tether to Capture One. Usually if I take out the CF Express card it will work though for some reason.

@@PeteCocoPhoto I tether to Smartshooter for the barcode recording feature. Smartshooter handles a connection loss to the camera really well. You can change batteries and reconnect continuing where you left off no problem. Smartshooter is just limited in its 'post' functionality. You can't rate photos etc like capture one

I have just purchased an R5 MK II and an R6 MK II in preparation for the 2028 total solar eclipse in Sydney. Do I really need battery grips? The answer lies in the possible loss of the opportunity to shoot during totality due to a weak battery. I would rather gamble on the cost of the grips than risk the loss of the opportunity to shoot during totality because my battery went out on my R5 or R6.

I got a BG-R10 and after only a few shoots the AF-on button started to stick, which messed up my AF. Thankfully my supplier swapped it with no quibbles and the second one seems to be ok. Its very well made and feels solid. A shame my R6 ii won't allow me charge batteries in camera though.

I currently map the buttons on the back of the R6 to things I like.... do the buttons on the battery pack just mirror what the ones on the camera do, or does the camera allow you to map those buttons seperately to different things?
@PeteCocoPhoto
@PeteCocoPhoto 2 жыл бұрын
Yes this is another issue. I couldn't find any way to map the buttons on the grip so I don't think it's possible unless I'm missing something...

The buttons on the grip mirror the camera buttons. That's it, nothing else.

Will grip recognize custom buttons you set up (for back button focus or similar) or will buttons be in their designed function? Thx!

Yes it will mimic the custom buttons you set for the camera.

So I was looking at the BGE22 and wondering, if I can add a quick release plate to it to make it work vertically on a tripod, but it seems I need an additional L bracket for that?
@PeteCocoPhoto
@PeteCocoPhoto 2 жыл бұрын
The grip has a mount for a quick release plate so no need for a bracket. Typically I use this on a 70-200 2.8 lens which has its own mount so when I shoot vertically I can just rotate it from the lens barrel.
@Dewabarasunderan
@Dewabarasunderan 2 жыл бұрын
@@PeteCocoPhoto The mount for the quick release plate is on the underside though, right? So it won't allow to use it vertically on a tripod? Or does it have a second spot on the side on which I can attach a second quick release plate? Thank you for your help. I've been learning a lot from your videos already.
@PeteCocoPhoto
@PeteCocoPhoto 2 жыл бұрын
@@Dewabarasunderan Ah I see what you mean. Yes the mount is on the bottom and there is no mount on the side. If you have a tripod that doesn't allow a vertical tilt, you will need a bracket. I use a ball head which is able to tilt 90 degrees so mounting it from the bottom is not a problem.
@Dewabarasunderan
@Dewabarasunderan 2 жыл бұрын
@@PeteCocoPhoto My tripods ball head also allows that, but there’s not enough clearance to get it perfectly straight, it gets slightly imbalanced and I’m losing some movability. I guess I’ll have to get both then and keep switching between, Thank you for your reply, as always ;) Keep up the good work!

If you want to see a well designed camera grip, go check out the EOS R grip, if you put a EOS R + grip side by side to a R5 + grip, you will know what I mean, the EOS R grip also feels much better on the hands because it blends in with the camera so much smoother. Also the USB-C port on the EOS R grip is so useful, it charges batteries one at a time but you can charge two batteries in the grip without attaching it to the camera. Any USB-C charger with 27W+ will work and it won't overcharge it if you use a more powerful charger.

@PeteCocoPhoto 3 жыл бұрын
Good to know. I tried an R and did not like how it felt, maybe I would have changed my mind with the grip attached. You bring up an excellent point -- I don't know why they would remove the USB-C port. Thanks for the insight!

I wonder how long it will be before we get a third party R5/R6 Grip ? It wouldn't need to have all the functionality of the BG-R10, just the two battery support ? $500 seems a lot to get two batteries, I'd pay perhaps $100 tops.
@PeteCocoPhoto
@PeteCocoPhoto 3 жыл бұрын
Yep, that's what I usually do as well. I had a Vello for my 6d, which worked great and was very well made. Hopefully someone will make one soon but it's too late for me lol. On the bright side, I intend on using this camera for a decade like my 5diii and so far I'm totally thrilled with it.

@@PeteCocoPhoto So I take it that you are not going to be tempted to trade up to the R3 (integral grip) or even the R1 when it comes ? I wont as the R5 does everything I need and I've added a bracket for quick orientation change use on a tripod.
@PeteCocoPhoto
@PeteCocoPhoto 3 жыл бұрын
@@grumblewoof4721 Nope. I am really thrilled with the R5 and since I am primarily a portrait photographer I prefer the higher resolution to the faster buffer. And the R5 is also ridiculously fast even if I needed it for some sports photos now and then.

I’d be very happy with my BG-R10 af-on button didn’t keep getting stuck in the “pressed” position and screwing up my work. 😡 this is the second one I’ve had and both have done it. Must be a design flaw.

I own 2 R5s and I am a grip guy. The grip is horrible other than for housing a second battery. The button layout is horrible!!! I would recommend anyone to avoid it unless you need the extra battery, like I do.
@PeteCocoPhoto
@PeteCocoPhoto 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Anthony. I can't disagree with you in general although I think the layout is okay. One thing that irks me is that the rear command dial changes my AF settings, and I can't figure out if it's possible to change that. I can't even find a user manual on Canon's website, and the one page guide included in the box annoys me too because if I pay $350 on an item, I think it's not too much to give me a proper manual... thanks for you insight!
@RogerZoul
@RogerZoul 3 жыл бұрын
@@PeteCocoPhoto The user manual is there, but if you cannot find leave an email and i will send it to you. You can reconfigure the wheel just like on other bodies, but the placement of the buttons is very substandard to anyone who wants to shoot in vertical format. And the battery tray looks like it will break if you look at it too hard.
@PeteCocoPhoto
@PeteCocoPhoto 3 жыл бұрын
@@RogerZoul Thanks! If you have a link to the manual send it to pete@petecocophoto.com - it would be much appreciated. I figured there must be a way to adjust those settings. I agree on the battery tray. I'm always very careful when changing them.

I can't agree more, I have a R5 and R, the EOS R grip is a much better product, when the grip is attached you see one camera, it doesn't look like or feel like a camera sitting a grip. The biggest difference is the USB-C port on the EOS R grip, the grip can be used for charging battery alone without attached to the camera, I can't believe that they took it away from the R5 grip.
