If they were going to do a restriction for the one ring it should've been done at the design stage. There are cards which say there can be any number of this card in your deck, why not have a card which says there can only be one copy in your deck and sideboard. If there is a revisit to Lord of the Rings we might get a a fixed version of the card. Something like Isildur's Bane - The One Ring.

It's not bad for a B&R but it doesn't fix the core of the issue at all. It doesn't really matter if what you want is the modern format as intended. Modern was supposed to be a non-rotating format for cards that had went through standard 8th edition onwards. That's the idea. Your decks were supposed to slowly evolve with a trickle of playables from new standard sets, meaning the emphasis would be deck expertise and sometimes brewing new decks and combos by using some new card to finally unlock the potential of an old one and so on. This idea died with MH1. Dead. Gone. Modern in that sense no longer exists, and it's reflected in the decline of local modern events. The solution is to go back to the formats intended role. Only cards that went through standard should be legal. That's the real Modern format, not this rotating crap. There is bad enough power creep still with the fire design of standard sets, but the MH effect is irredeemable and can't be salvaged with any amount of well intended B&Rs. Nuke it from orbit.

My read is that Twin will be good but not overwhelming since the deck will still have access to stuff like Teferi Time Raveler and Veil of Summer, so you could definitely get some kind of combo control deck out of it.

I think this is the shot in the arm Modern needs - sometimes a meta shakeup is just as important as tackling the toxicity. It’s seen a lot in Warhammer more (my other hobby of choice).

Definitely some good stuff here. But for me, it's too late. I quit modern earlier this year because of The One Ring and other LGS reasons and then all my friends got into Commander. So now all of my modern decks are Commander decks so, that's my Magic life now. TBH, because of my LGS, I probably would've quit regardless but still. It's good to see this. If I ever do get back into Modern, hopefully it'll be a format again.

As much as I'd love to see Dredgevine return, I don't think Looting will bring Dredge or most GY-based above tier 3. Endurance is just too oppressive as a card, along with all of the other GY answers that Horizons sets have brought into the meta. that said, I'll definitely be trying to make Hollowvine work again. Looting's ban just killed that deck in the cradle.

I agree with the amped raptor hit tbh. It might not be the best energy card they have but it is a rapid accelerant. Guide of souls turn 1 into amped raptor turn 2 is common enough. Hitting another amped raptor is the worst case scenario and even then you still have 3 bodies and 3 energy by the end of turn 2

I hate restricted lists because I played when "type 2" had one, and if you played the game before Vintage became the only format with a restricted list Im pretty sure you get it. However, if they had restricted The One Ring, I can't see myself disagreeing. That would be flavorful af, it'd save people from losing a lot of value, and with it just being one card that makes a lot of sense, it wouldn't be so bad. It would still come with the same feel bads the come with your opponent getting lucky and drawing their copy and less but still feel bads of if only I could have drawn it I would have won, but if ever there was card that Id give a pass to in modern magic (pun intended), itd be the one. And now I shall return to my memories of playing Zuran Orb and Balance and just how unbelievably dumb that was to have in standard.

Dissapointed to see raptor eat the ban instead of guide, I've been playing a fairly successful jund deck using raptor as a cascade card, so I'm sad to see wizards say the raptor sees zero play outside of boros energy

Yeah, I play it in a couple Historic energy + delirium builds (with and without Crashing Footfalls), but I still can, at least for now, so that's cool. They ban stuff predominantly based on the competitive tournament metagame, and no other dominant meta decks played Raptor (but, to be fair, some of those decks might have emerged if they hit something else from Boros energy). I think they probably had internal data that showed that Raptor was the best target. It provides guaranteed card advantage while cheating on mana at the same time, which is always a dangerous combo. I think they also prefer to ban uncommons vs rares/mythics when possible just because of the money players have invested in rarer cards.

Armed raptor isn't the issue. I don't like banning 1 drops typically, but guide is the culprit to Energy being an issue. Armed raptor was a thing in Jund and RG style decks.

Personally glad to see Amped Raptor eat the ban instead of Guide of Souls-for now. It might not be enough, to your point, but I do want to see how the deck functions with a lesser handicap.

I feel like the internal data they had on Raptor cast/win rates had to show that it was easily the best ban target. Raptor is fantastic on turn 2 (regardless of the rest of your hand) and also an amazing top-deck in virtually every situation. Guide/Pride are extremely powerful and amazing on turn 1, but they can each be answered 1-for-1. Ajani leaves behind the 2/1 (and is much harder to answer because of the threat of flipping), but Raptor is so often what finds the Ajani (or the Goblin Bombardment, or the Phlage). It's a guaranteed 2-mana 2-for-1 that becomes a 3-for-1 whenever it hits another 2-for-1, and that swings the game massively whenever it happens. It's way too much for 2-mana on an above-average body. Spells that provide card advantage and cheat on mana at the same time have long been unbalanced (Time Spiral probably being the original poster-child for this), and this is exactly what Raptor does. It tutors a random spell into exile (stronger than just drawing a random card) and casts it for free. They could have better-balanced Raptor by increasing its whiff-rate. Like, if it only looked at X cards, where X was your current energy total (or maybe if you paid X energy to exile up to X cards, then got to cast the first one you hit for free if MV

Im sad historic is not getting ANY love. There's a few decks there that are way and beyond above the rest. I'd love to see Karn the Great Creator being banned in historic, given mono green devotion got alot of power from fanatic and the outlaws 3 mana plot guy i forgot the name of. I just always roll my eyes when they plop down a karn on turn 4-5 with 328 mana available and a karn-board filled with answers to literally any situation. Maybe i just need to learn to play against it. Who knows.

Splinter Twin being unbanned is perfectly healthy. Modern is way too fast of a format for this deck would be viable especially with the MH2 Elementals and Force of Negation. I still think Boros Aggro is a top deck with the bannings but the Amped Raptor ban slows the deck a bit. Affinity will become a top deck with the Opal being freed.

Without ring, or raptor RW energy lost all card advantage engines. Its close enough to white x/1 tribal that sulfur elemental seems like a reasonable hate card (and it also stops goblin bombardment)

Also I have always been wanting to play 8cast esque cards, so Mopal coming back means this might actually be a playable deck again (also maybe the old hardened scales decks are gonna enjoy this) Also I will say, obv splinter twin isnt amazing. But I do definitely think jeskai control might like this for a small pivot sideboard. Or maybe even wizards decks, since u can just twin for value if u dont have the combo. Wizards should just stop making “masters” sets.
