-Cheat meals are not necessary, they are done for psychological reasons. -Eat cheat meals post workouts to potentiate growth (1 or 2 meals after the workout). -Have a protein shake if you cheat meal doesn't have much protein or just because it will take longer to digest so that means you can take more protein (eat between 1.5 to 2 times the normal amount of protein per cheat meal). -Don't cheat meal everyday, the less the better. -Have your cheat meal be around 30% of your daily caloric intake at most. -Cheat meals also have negative effects for psychological reasons, once you tasted the good food you want more of it when previously you had the habit of eating healthy food, don't make a habit out of them, do them when neccesary. -Eat cheat meals during social occasions to have more fun(don't be a fatty that eats uber eats alone in your house like the sad lonely person that you are). -Mike doesn't have friends. -Jared is an IFBB pro. -Don't think too much about what is the optimal cheat meal (they are for pleasure, the concept of cheat meal means it's not good, you are trying to optimize oreos vs pizza). -You can eat less fats before the cheat meal to save some calories and rather than doing two normal meals just do one big cheat meal one or two meals after the workout to not gain as much fat from your cheat meal.

He touches on this in the last point, but I think it bears repeating: Don’t worry too much about cutting your Calories to make room for your cheat meal. One, that typically means less food in your peri-workout period, probably not ideal. Two, that transaccional approach, trying to balance the books or undo the damage, can get ugly for some folks. This is supposed to be fun.

My cheat days are insanely unrestrained. I eat whatever I want, as much as I want. I do this because it's tri-monthly. For three months my diet is very regimented and I stick to it to the T. I map out my meals for weeks in advance, calculate macros and all. After three months I go crazy and eat what I want. The week after, is a maintenance week, which I'm fine with, after that, I fall back into losing weight like nothing happened. I lose three pounds a week, every week, never fail. I have the benefit of being an insanely focused and obsessive person, so dieting is easy for me. I got fat due to complacency and I hate cooking, loathe it, so eating fast food was my go-to since it was quick and easy. I'm aware this is unique to me and not for everyone. The important thing is to find what works best for you.

I do one or two cheat meals a week during a fat loss phase. Not because I think it's doing anything for my metabolism but just because I'm not in any rush and I don't have any deadline. I like to indulge and I'm still in a defecit for the week. If one week the deficit is a little smaller it doesn't really bother me as long as I know I was in a deficit. Going too hard or trying to rush it has always backfired so I'm just taking my sweet old time. I don't need to be in a 500 cal deficit every single day. Some days can be maintenance, some days can he just 1-300 below. Some days 500+ some days 500 over. Most days I'm in a deficit and I've been losing about half pound a week. Once you get close to 15% it's better to slow down.

I'm the same. I love pizza, donuts, and ice cream. I ain't giving them up! So on weekends I enjoy a few and a couple drinks. I'm still losing between 2.5 to 4 lbs a month. I eat no junk during week.

There are two main things to focus on when working to lose weight, staying active as much as possible during the day and staying consistent with the diet. Consistent, low intensity activity is really crucial to losing weight early on in the weight loss journey. Many people will work too hard at the gym trying to force quick changes and then sit around at home super tired doing nothing. That causes them miss out on an the extra calories that are burned by cleaning, doing yard work, or taking the dog for walk. Intensive workouts are great for saving time, but most people feel less tired spreading their activity throughout the day.

The main thing to watch out for with cheat meals is that excess oils, processed sugar, and salt can make people who don't eat that stuff very often feel awful. When I do have a cheat meal, I'll make sure not to eat too much or all be on the toilet for two days. So if I end up at a fast food place and need to eat something, I'll just get a burger and water, skipping the soda and fries.

Yeah, I once ate out with my parents for the first time in years and it was around 800 calories but I was swollen for days and retaining water like crazy after that. I swore off of cheat meals after that. I just eat more of the healthy food if I feel like a "cheat" meal.

In my experience as a fitness and diet coach, cheat meals, especially cheat days shouldn’t be encouraged at all. They almost always result in a huge setback that undoes days, if not an entire week’s worth of hard work. They also often trigger a relapse because ultimately the problem with being overweight comes down to an addiction to junk food.
@HartlepoolLad3 ай бұрын
Utter rubbish. If you are eating a strict diet, at some point you will stop altogether as you get fed up of not having much of a "normal life“, and may even binge eat. I try to make healthier high-protein versions of my favourite foods when I’m at home, so that I don’t feel like I’m missing out. And eating high protein puddings or chocolate bars helps too. But occasionally I want to socialise with friends and eat out in restaurants, or am on holiday and it’s harder to be strict. Most of the time I’m still able to be sensible and choose meals higher in protein and lower in fat or sugar, but occasionally I just want a normal meal without worrying too much. I do that occasionally, but I still try to factor that into my calories do that I’m not too much over, if possible. And this works fine for me. It may slow progress a little, but that’s the very small price to pay for having a normal life.

I used to eat an entire king sized chocolate bar in one day when I wasn't watching my calories. Instead, I just have a small piece after a meal. You can cheat a little bit if you have self control. If you don't have self control, you need to work on that or you will never keep the weight off. I don't think of it as cheating, I think of it as a reword for milestones. Instead of per week, I do per certain amount of weight and still watch calories.

Hi Dr.Mike! Thank you for the video, it was great. Is it a good idea to create a video about the effects of anabolics and cheat meals? Some people who use those stuff seem to be able to get away with so many calories that burning it off seems incredible given the amount of calories and the frequency of the cheat meals. They may not eat that much or it may be easy for them to burn it off but if there is really a significant relationship with these drugs and calorie expenditure, making a video about it may clear up some confusion.

What if your cheat meal is alcohol? I know you need to keep it as far as possible from your workout. What seems to be in dispute is whether or not to eat protein with alcohol. Some say your body will digest only the alcohol until it is fully metabolized, which would mean you either store all the other nutrients as fat or you just crap it all out. However, if you can digest the alcohol with other nutrients at the same time, then it would make sense to combine it with protein. The last option would be to go commando and just drink alcohol on an empty stomach and keep it empty until the alcohol has metabolized. The last option usually ends with you waking up with a sharpie mural on your face. But you will feel lean.

I was on a weight loss journey that started last year and lasted for 11 months, I lost 12 kgs and went from 74 kg to 62 kg. I'm on maintenance for now, I will start my muscle gain journey in 1-2 months. So during my fat loss journey (11 months) I was eating 1500-1550 cal. every day, except for Fridays, when I had cheat meals. And this cheat meal was almost always a cheese pizza. A whole cheese pizza (a small one though, approximately 25-30 cm). I ate it all by myself, It brought me joy, but I was still losing 100-150-200 gramms per week. I guess, the fact that I was super strict with my macros during the rest of the days helped me a lot. Because, man oh man, a cheese pizza is way more than 30% of my calories intake. In wonder why it worked for me... I am on maintenance for 4 months now, and I'm still 62 kgs (the weight fluctuated from 61,3 to 62,3, but I'm a woman, so it's understandable), I still have heavy cheat meals like this on fridays and I still manage to maintain the weight. Maybe it's because I workout at the gym 4 times a weak and lift heavy and also walk 10k steps a day... I am confused, as to how I managed to lose and maintain with such heavy cheat meal every week

Cheats tend to help me keep from not bottoming out hard. I tend to undershoot my deficits (so instead of -500 it's close to -800) and lose weight faster than anticipated, and getting to eat something a little more substantial 2-3 times a week keeps me from really dipping down and cutting too fast

My cheat meal yesterday was a whole salt crusted coal roasted red tilapia with lettuce, some other green herbs and a sweet and spicy jalapeño sauce with some rice noodles (you put everything in a piece of lettuce and then eat it. It's super healthy and super tasty) Normally I share 1 fish with my wife. But when I'm cheating, I eat the whole thing alone 😅

I think it depends on the person. If i completely eliminate cheat meals from my diet, my cravings disappears, and I can go usually even 1 year without touching cheat foods (with occasional refeeding), without even thinking about it. I simply don't miss them. As soon as I cheat, I start needing to cheat more and more often, to the point that even going two days with no cheat meals is hell.

I do three cheap meals a week, two of them I get my daily protein intake (very low fat and carbs), and then I have some sort of dessert (higher in carbs and fat but not insane), then the third I get close to daily protein intake, once again very low calorie, and then I kind of go nuts, like burger and fries and big fat slice of cheesecake. It's all about the sum total for the week and just making sure it's under control, and aligns with your plans. If I do this and I notice any weight gain, I add extra steps per day to my walks. I prefer a high calorie high activity approach, More than eating a low amount of calories hitting the weights and then just sitting in a chair for the rest of the day, I saw a major improvement in size, strength, and leanness switching to high calorie high activity.

i´m eating very healthy high carb, low fat, moderate protein...but i also love unhealthy foods, like most of us :-) so my diet plan also includes every 2 weeks a fun - day where i can eat whatever i want but without going overboard...my fun - day is not for boosting my metabolism or to refeed it´s just because i love this time - out for my brain and my body...no matter whether i am bulking or in a cut :-) greetings from austria, vienna!!!

In this video, Dr. Mike puts an emphasis on meal timing. Paraphrasing, "eat your cheat meal 2 meals after a workout". What is the magnitude of effect of doing that vs eating your cheat meal right after? More generally, what's the magnitude of effect of meal frequency + protein distribution through the day? Is it measurable on a DEXA scan... monthly? yearly?

I've learned that there's a big difference between a cheat meal & a cheat day. I tried a cheat day but lost 3/4 days of progress. Recently I tried 1 cheat meal every 4th night & that seems sustainable. I skip it if I can but I like having the comfort of knowing I can.

For me the safest is 1 meal a week,if I allow myself more than 1 I end up cheating a few days😅

@@zezeti2246 1 every 4th turns into once a week if I skip. Sometimes I'll skip 2/3 in a row, but I like having it there as an option if I think I need it. I'm in cutting stage tho so it'll probably change once I switch to maintenance
