We walk through the underground passages of the "most dangerous" neighborhood in Kyiv called Troieshchyna (Kiev) and check if the Ukrainian notes given to us by the local Babushka sellers are in fact, counterfeit money.
With our newly acquired 200 uah possibly counterfeit notes, my friend ‪@baldandbankrupt‬ and I look for the only restaurant in all of Troieshchyna.

Here is a video (1 minute long) inspired by it as a trailer for a video game (well, dlc for it) kzbin.info/www/bejne/jni6iHVphK1mq7M (For context: basically, the Ottoman Empire sent an ultimatum to the Zaporozhian Cossacks demanding their surrender and submission... this picture (and video) depict their reply, even though it is likely fake, was a fucking badass "fuck you suck my balls"-esque reply to the strongest upcoming empire at the time that threatened to genocide their people from the face of the earth))

It’s a pity that you don’t catch the subtleties, they were joking, they wouldn’t take more, these are honest and self-ironic people who share their “happiness”, namely a low pension, these are such Soviet jokes of very strong-willed people, so insignificant that you don’t even need to explain , as a gesture .. but I'm still. 5:03 The painting exhibits the Cossacks' vulgarity letter to sultan. The story: Reply of the Zaporozhian Cossacks depicts a supposedly historical tableau, set in 1676, and based on the legend of Cossacks sending an insulting reply to an ultimatum from the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, Mehmed IV. According to the story, the Zaporozhian Cossacks (from "beyond the rapids", Ukrainian: za porohamy), (inhabiting the lands around the lower Dnieper River in Ukraine) had defeated Ottoman Empire forces in battle. However, Mehmed demanded that the Cossacks submit to Ottoman rule. The Cossacks, led by Ivan Sirko, replied in a characteristic manner: they wrote a letter, replete with insults and profanities. Sultan Mehmed IV to the Zaporozhian Cossacks: As the Sultan; son of Muhammad; brother of the sun and moon; grandson and viceroy of God; ruler of the kingdoms of Macedonia, Babylon, Jerusalem, Upper and Lower Egypt; emperor of emperors; sovereign of sovereigns; extraordinary knight, never defeated; steadfast guardian of the tomb of Jesus Christ; trustee chosen by God Himself; the hope and comfort of Muslims; confounder and great defender of Christians - I command you, the Zaporogian Cossacks, to submit to me voluntarily and without any resistance, and to desist from troubling me with your attacks. The Cossacks' reply came as a stream of invective and vulgar rhymes: Zaporozhian Cossacks to the Turkish Sultan! O sultan, Turkish devil and damned devil's kith and kin, secretary to Lucifer himself. What the devil kind of knight are thou, that canst not slay a hedgehog with your naked arse? The devil shits, and your army eats. Thou shalt not, thou son of a whore, make subjects of Christian sons. We have no fear of your army; by land and by sea we will battle with thee. Fuck thy mother. Thou Babylonian scullion, Macedonian wheelwright, brewer of Jerusalem, goat-fucker of Alexandria, swineherd of Greater and Lesser Egypt, pig of Armenia, Podolian thief, catamite of Tartary, hangman of Kamyanets, and fool of all the world and underworld, an idiot before God, grandson of the Serpent, and the crick in our dick. Pig's snout, mare's arse, slaughterhouse cur, unchristened brow. Screw thine own mother! So the Zaporozhians declare, you lowlife. You won't even be herding pigs for the Christians. Now we'll conclude, for we don't know the date and don't own a calendar; the moon's in the sky, the year with the Lord. The day's the same over here as it is over there; for this kiss our arse! - Koshovyi otaman Ivan Sirko, with the whole Zaporozhian Host upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/73/Repin_Cossacks.jpg

Good job. I wish you had tipped the old ladies you had bought socks and coffee from. It might make a big difference in their lives.

They are strong enough, believe me. They will do without changing 5 bucks, it will not play any role in their lives. They have pensions in the region of 100 bucks, and a subsidy from the state, + private entrepreneurship, yes, this is certainly a penny even for Ukraine, but everyone lives like this here, this is not India or not a tribe in Africa where "civilization" came. This is one of the largest countries Europe, everything is not so bad here for 5 bucks to play a decisive role in life .. It's more a matter of respect. Grandma traded goods, she has to give change, ethics.. Here, many people will not take money from you, they have pride if they are not in a very bad situation..

5:05 Everyone should know this painting. Its called "The Zahpriozie Cossacks Write a Letter to the Sultan". The Ottoman sultan demanded that the Zahprozie cossacks would join his empire. He wrote a long letter where he spelled out every major title he held (King of the Romans, Jerusalem, Egypt, etc etc). When the cossacks answered they answered by writing out every title he had mentioned only changing the actual title to something along swineherd of Jerusalem, bastard of Egypt, pissdrinker of the Romans etc. This is why you can see the men laughing hysterically around the table. These cossacks held lands north of Crimea, bordering the Ottoman tax farm of Moldavia.

I'm thankful to Bald that I discovered Johnny through him. I really like the guy and they make for the perfect combination. I love to know about Ukrainian and Slavic culture in general which feels so distant here in western Europe. Basically, we don't really get to know about other cultures in-depth, only on the most basic level, and that is what separates us. I believe blatant racism today would be a lot less common if we were really engaged with other people and their cultures. Going through some really awful times at the moment, I just wanna thank both of you for the amazing and often informative content. Makes one feel a lot less alone just to watch ya.
