A similar thing happened during the Manhattan Project. A scifi magazine publisher noticed that a number of subscribers had changed their addresses to a remote location in New Mexico. He figured that his fans could only be up to one thing. He was right.

Campbell, the editor of Astounding Science Fiction, noticed that a number of subscriptions had their addresses changed to a P.O. Box in New Mexico. He suspected that something significant was going on, especially given the number of prominent physicists and chemists among his readership.
