Having visited Hungary in the early seventies and seeing it today. It is clear that Hungary has retrieved its soul from the appalling communist oppression it was under. I recall the headlines of the 1956 uprising and how buoyed up my family was at the time. Today we thankfully stand with Hungary and Poland et al as yet another potential crisis looms on the borders of Poland.

If you're not of Polish or Hungarian origin why would you come? These are not immigration countries like the United States, nor were the built on the same principles or same people as Anglo countries (like the United States). Ethnicity is an important thing amongst conservative and nationalist circles in Poland and Hungary (even if the governments may quietly deny it). Many migrants from other EU countries in Poland brag about 'how easy the women are' (talk about disrespect to your male hosts), are appalled by restrictions on abortion, regularly believe discourse on the Polish right is 'too radical', and don't even try to learn the language in any serious way.

Great interview. I remember visiting Hungary in December 1990 and there was basically one ticket window open in the whole of the main Budapest train station because the rest of the electricity was off. I also remember how there were people at the train station waiting there as soon as you stepped off the train who would offer you a room in their apartment to stay the night for a very low price. The entire family would be there in the apartment and they would prepare a place for you to stay and they were quite friendly and hospitable.

The most noticeable thing about the Hungarian electoral map for 2018 is that the vast majority of support for the left-leaning parties was in and around Budapest. I'm not sure that there are any other cities of any size in Hungary but I'd bet any large 'metropolitan' areas will be left voting. It's a city/urban v. rural issue.

One of the rules of Western Society......or is it all established societies(?) is to stay instep, whether it be goose or quick and don't rock the boat. Poland and Hungary are independent thinkers and I say bravi. They haven't been conjoled by wealth and comfort into forgetting Tyranny and how it comes into power. I always felt that East Germany's role in the Reunification of Germany was to help 'WestGermany' stay level headed with it's feet attached to Earth. We will see with the development of these stupid Mandate responses in these Pandemic times and those to come, just how independent and level headed this thinking will be.

It still seems a poor reason.
