A four month old orange shorthair stray followed me home. At first I wasn’t sure I wanted to keep him so I let him stay in the yard and left him milk. I had a swing sofa on the back porch with a tarp over it and he made it his tent. Every morning I opened the screen door he would jump out demanding food. Some days later I was having lunch and he climbed up the screen door. When he got to about 5 feet high he spread eagled himself and starred at me like a Garfield window cling. I had to let him in. He lived it up on fresh tuna, scallops, shrimp and Temptations/Friskies treats and grew up to be a big boy with the silkiest fur and wettest nose. He was loved every day for 16 years and gave me plenty of worries. I lost him 15 days ago to kidney disease. On his last morning he woke up next to me and put his paw on the back of my hand and smiled, as if to say “thank you and goodbye”. He was my soulmate. His very last scratch scar is disappearing from my arm. I miss my friend terribly.

This made me tear up! Even difficult cats deserve a chance - we didn't stroke our first rescue for 18 months and she got kicked out of 2 catteries for bad behaviour when we were on holiday. Took patience but we had the best 17 years with her

A friend of mine took in a "difficult" foster while it was sick and then sent it back to the shelter to be adopted out, only she sat there for months because she was too big and too old and too "crabby" for most people. She always had the saddest look on her face, too. My friend continued to foster the sick cats for the shelter, but kept checking on the crabby cat and was always disappointed when all the other cats seemed to get adopted but Crabby was still there, looking sadder and sadder. Finally, my friend couldn't take it any more and became a "failed" foster parent by adopting Miss Crabby, who was not only big and old and mean, but also had special needs. After 5 years with my friend, Crabby has a new name - Rosalie - and a much happier look on her face. She's still difficult and my friend has to wear gauntlets to groom her (and she's a longhair on top of it all), but she loves her hoomin when she's not being groomed. And it makes me cry to think about it because like you say, even difficult kitties need love, and Rosalie and Penny are a special pair.

i've had mine since she was 5 weeks old, now she's just about 18 months. she's high-energy, thinks you're playing with her most of the time, and has play aggression. i often think, "if she went to a shelter there's no way she'd get adopted." but she's NEVER going to a shelter - she's home, no matter what. not "until i have kids" (i already have one, the cat lol) or "until i move" or any BS like that. she's mine. forever.

@ Raelyn I agree about the Titanic...that bit was inspired! I've adopted/rescued many times over the past 50 years. To any who are thinking about it...THIS is what you're in for. The ending, where you have a faithful little buddy, bringing you gifts, is well worth the danger of a shredded personal item or two. To help with the shredding, get a good-sized, carpeted, rope-wrapped, "cat tree" and "Velcro" your new cat to it as you walk by...as they climb down, they will be discovering places to sleep, stalk from, and shred. Your furniture may be spared. Also, the expensive catnip mouse will lie there as the cat plays wildly with a balled-up piece of paper you've thrown to the middle of the room!

I live with two cats and a dog, all rescues. The house panther (greater north american) started out extremely shy, but then he came out of his shell with proper care and feeding and gentleness. His mom was a stray who took up residing in the barn at a nearby farm. The owners of the property put out a call to adopt the kittens. He is now the MOST affectionate cat. When I first met him he was the spitting image of Jiji from Kiki's Delivery Service. He's filled out quite a bit now. He often greets me outside my bedroom door when I come out to head downstairs, gives me the highest pitched meow (out of 20 pounds of cat), flops on the floor, and waits for his due in petting. And he gets it. The Grey Ghost (tinius meowus) is 7lbs, and likewise disliked everyone and hid under a bed for half the first year she was with us. She was dumped in a park where she lived for months until a rescue charity was notified and they came along, checked her for chipping (none), cleaned the parasites out of her, and gave her a warm place and food. We got her shortly after, and she is now to the point she will let me pick her up, put her on my shoulder, and pet her, and purrrr. My heart melted the first time this happened. Now she's gotten loud and demanding, she wants running water to drink so she meows in the bathtub for us to turn the faucet on. The dog was kept in a kennel crate for the first year of his life. His owners put him up for sale. He now lives with us. He is (sigh) a problematic dog, but we're working to enhance the loving playful side and heal the wounds of inattention and neglect. He's come along, but he still has a very negative reaction to children to the point we have to gate him off if there are kids over, and when we let him outside, we take him to the backyard, not the front, because he will bark at everything and not stop until it's out of his senses.

He gave me a side eye as i came back in, when i sat down to think, he hops up curls up in my lap, did his little headbutt thing. I went to the shelter for a young, beautiful longhaired black and silver tabby. I left with my adult, mostly white, shorthaired hellion and it was the BEST decision. Why did I pick her? Because while I was waiting for the tabby to be available (she'd been in the paper and several of us came to look at her), I noticed my cat languishing in her cage. One of the workers at the shelter said, "Oh, she's been here for months. It's changing her personality, poor thing." So I thought I'd just pet her while I waited. She snuggled up and started purring, then promptly bit my hand and drew blood. As I was trying to extract my hand from her sharp teeth, the worker (with her head in the cage next door) said, "She's such a feisty calico. Don't you love a cat with a bit of an edge to her?" and I realized that 1. this shelter worker should have been moving used cars and 2. nobody was going to adopt this cat if I didn't. We had a bit of a rocky start, but spent 12 years together and she was weird and hilarious and sweet and yes, sometimes a bit crazed, but mostly, she loved me.

Definitely support the 'adopt, don't shop' mentality. Our cat was decreed to be a problem cat (adopted out twice before us, returned twice with 'behavior problems') and she had a behavior rap sheet that spread over 4 pages of biting people that stuck their fingers in her cage, along with health problems from the cramped conditions. We went to see her twice (found her through an adoption page), and finally got to see her in person the second time around since she was in the clinic the first time. Immediately asked to see her, and we sat in the 'testing' room not touching her or smothering her with attention, simply watching what she did (hardest thing to do in my life). She quickly walked around the perimeter and sat in each of our laps for a few minutes. We walked out of the adoption center with her ten minutes later. Edit: Forgot to mention that she didn't have any behavior issues. She hated kids, and both previous families had them. We suspect the kids were treating her poorly or stressed her out too much, hence the defensive biting and scratching.
@crowmosome50024 жыл бұрын
Carolyn I also support the adopt don’t shop thing. Also the people complains that the cat bite and stretched them when putting their fingers in the cage are just dumb. If the cat doesn’t trust you yet let it get adjusted first. It’s an animal for crying out loud. I wouldn’t like someone I don’t know that well or trust doing that to me.

Simon's Cat always brings a smile to my face and usually a giggle or three will slip out too, even on the most dire of days. Thanks for that. I actually teared up when he was put in the cage on his own and his little sad stance and face.. More because it makes me think of all the kitties (and dogs,) who are literally in this position. And honestly, I could really relate to the first evening after bringing them home and they want nothing to do with you, or your food, or any of the toys you got in prep for them and you feel a little deflated and kinda give up and just let them be while we nurse our egos for a bit, lol! And then when that moment comes (maybe hours, days, weeks or even years for some,) when they suddenly decide "OK hooman, you'll do. You can love me and I'll let you pet me sometimes, and I might even like it. You may serve me," is special. LOL And on that note, I must go serve her her dinner..again. (She likes little but often don't you know?) She's been in my face the whole time watching this and now typing and I can tell you, she ain't happy! Oops...Too long, jumped down off sofa in disgust, flopped onto floor looking into nothingness wondering will she ever be satiated again?! ...

I hope you do go to your local shelter and adopt. It would make such a difference. I'm on the board of directors for my local shelter and to see the before and after pictures of our animals once they've found their forever homes is the best feeling in the world.
