Sidney Sheldon's novel was brought to the screen by Twentieth Century Fox in 1977. Here is a 720p upscaled trailer celebrating it's 41st anniversary restoration by Twilight Time Movies.

Even for the 70s, the concept of using 'pan and scan' of still images for an entire trailer was unusual (and not particularly effective, it seems). The story goes (alluded to in a comment below), that the studio brass at 20th Century Fox were so nervous that they were not going to make back the 10 million invested in 'Star Wars' (indeed, Alan Ladd Jr. - who had great faith in the movie's success - had his head on the chopping block to the last minute), and had put stock in 'Midnight' being THE summer blockbuster, that they demanded any theatres that booked 'Midnight' had to take the dud 'Star Wars' as part of a package deal. Well, the rest you know: one movie wound up as a trivia question, and one movie wound up with a trivia question for just about every one of the hundreds of millions of dollars it earned.

At the basis of anything, "The Other Side of Midnight" was an adaptation of a novel that was No1 on the NYT Bestseller list, and Star Wars was a bizarro swashbuckling adventure in space, so I can understand why 20th Century wanted to hedge their bets.
@CaminoAir2 жыл бұрын
Add to that 'Damnation Alley', which the Fox board and most of the executives believed would be a smash that summer (before it was delayed due to post-production re-working). Fox have had some of the biggest and most forgotten movies of the last 50 years.

@@TacShooter Well... The Other Side of Midnight, before becoming a movie, was a bestselling book that was Number 1 on the NYT Bestseller list. At the time, this was enough to ensure a movie would be a certified hit, so I imagine that 20th Century Fox was convinced that an adaptation of a bestselling book would be a more rational box office proposition than a swashbuckling space adventure.

@jasonmerrin45053 жыл бұрын
Actually the movie's version of the harrowing abortion scene worked better than the book's. In the book Noelle plots and eats for three months with the deliberate intent of aborting the fetus via the wire coat hanger. Her deliberate motive was for the fetus to suffer and feel the pain that she directed at Larry. On screen there is no way the audience would have rooted for or empathized with a heartbroken heroine that makes such a monstrous, calculated decision. The movie served the character better by having her act out of impulse and desperation as opposed to tailored malice.

Sidney Sheldon no doubt used Catherine Deneuve as the prototype for the book's heroine. Faye Dunaway was offered the role of Noelle and turned it down. I thought Marie-France Pisier made an enchanting Noelle on screen and gave the character far more depth than the screenplay offered. Producer Frank Yablans on the dvd commentary is actually passive-aggressive about the actress. Going so far as to say in a round about way that Marie-France lacked the beauty the role demanded and that Susan Sarandon should have been cast as Noelle instead of Catherine. Sarandon is many things but a great beauty she is not.

One of the very few movies that was faithful to the book. The movie due to time, understandably eliminated the Nazi subplot. It was the only redeeming quality the book allotted to the character of Noelle. She spied on the Nazi's for the French resistance. The movie is pure style over substance. The perfect junk food.

In this book, there were 4 central characters that provided readers various emotions from lowest to the highest level of emotion that seemed to have no ending, but in the concluding book (Memories of Midnight) only two of them survived, one had an evil motive in his mind, heart and soul and the other, totally unware of what's really going to happen to her... so engrossing to read!!!!

Just watched the movie. I had no idea how long it was gonna be but I was desperate to see it to the end. Spoiler alert: For me, the abortion and the scene where Larry tried to kill Cassie was so shocking. I agree that the actor for Larry's role wasn't good. I could not feel what Noel and Cassie felt for Larry. I couldn't understand why they would fall for him. You have to see that level of attraction to understand why people keep letting themselves be fooled by a person. That has to be shown through the actor. But throughout the whole movie, I just despised that character. The build up to Noel's revenge plot was so great I was so disappointed when she threw herself at him again. Yes, it made sense from what we knew about the ending but I so desperately wanted some bigger twist. The ending, I sort of saw coming. I hoped at some point Noel would convince his lover to help her get revenge on Larry but the whole point of her story was wearing that dress and being married to him so. Still the scene where she was executed despite the tragedy was beautiful. Especially the scene where the prison guards were helping her get ready. I liked their facial expressions. Made the scene more genuine. All in all, I enjoy classic movies and of course revenge stories could be interesting. Enjoyed the beautiful acting of the two leading ladies. I recommend it.
