Blackpool has so much to offer, yet on the other hand has still so much to massively improve on and that was the case before all the closures due to COVID. It's really good to hear that they are finally investing in the town. Have a good week! - Nettie.

I was in Blackpool this week for a gig, which was in the Empress Ballroom in the Winter Gardens, having seen the Spanish Suite, I’m gutted I didn’t get a chance to explore there more. I have to say though, that Blackpool is the dullest and saddest resort I’ve ever been to, not so much for the resort itself, but the dilapidation and general condition of the surrounding areas with so many “guest houses” having been shut down and boarded up etc. I would have loved to have visited Blackpool in its heyday, people of an older generation speak so fondly of it.

My dad used to work in the police station and I was able to see it a few times in my life through seeing him at work and he showed me parts of it that weren't in use anymore the other year when people started to use the new police station instead. Had such an eerie feel in there haha

I have started to binge watch your channel. I love your video style here. The music and the facts on the screen. Would love to see more of this! I am also from overseas living in the UK and I have a whole new respect for Blackpool than before. I sadly had a very uninformed and biased view, that it was tacky all around and that it was only amazing in the old days. It has a lot more charm than I thought. Thank you for educating me.

So haunting and liminal. There’s something about the old 60’s concrete aesthetic in parts of the UK that drive me crazy for some reason. Like looking into some nostalgia I wasn’t a part of or have even experienced. Like Thamesmead and it’s brutalist apartment blocks, I can’t even really describe it but it’s so much more interesting to look at and explore than the cut and paste stores/design you see everywhere now.

I used to regularly use the Abingdon Street post office. The interior was really quite impressive, with lots of very posh dark wood panelling. It also housed the main telephone exchange, which you could see when you walked around the back. Looking up at the first floor windows you were able to see the big mechanical switching machines that would make the clicking noises when you dialled out on the old style phones. Jeez, I'm old! 😂

Blackpool is one of them magical places you went to as a kid, and going back as an adult is a complete let-down. Yeah, I've been back for stag do's and all that, had good weekends, but having a wander around where all the fancy old BnB's used to be, but now in so much of a decrepit state it's depressing. Basically, there is no excuse for how it ended up if you ask me, they shoved immigrants in the BnB places, these places took that easy money, but it all got dragged down. For years there was no reinvestment back into the town... The council took the money and ran, probably hoarded in an Icelandic bank account and then lost during the financial crisis, as many councils money did... But noone can tell me that town didnt make money to be reinvested and maintained... Because if they do... I'd call them a liar! I have little to no interest in going back to Blackpool if I'm honest, because everytime I do, it spoils memories I have when my grandparents used to take me.

@@WalkWithMeTim Yeah, I mean, I'm a bit of a bugger for spying stuff, I love old architectural stuff like, a bit like yourself... But my problem is, I have a keen eye... To keen in fact. And it's just not here in the UK, as a comparison, take Paris, it's got the tower and all that, which all looks lovely when lit up on a night. During the day though, it is indeed, a s&*thole. Like, if your standing at the bottom of the Champs-Elysees just down from the cafes and shops and look down towards the ferris wheel in the Place de la Concorde, it's a boulevard (Petit Palace is on the right), it's lined with white flagstones, and obviously over the years, these flagstones have needed to be replaced. Now in such a place, you would "expect" them to be replaced with other similar flagstones, maybe not EXACTLY the same, but, given the location, you'd think they would try... But nope, what have they used... Tarmac, black horrible splodges of tarmac just dotted all the way down. I look and think.... That's terrible! Another one for me is the bins there... OMG... The bins!!! :D While here in the UK we have decent bins, we've tried... Our bins generally have ashtrays in the tops now and a place for gum and they are solid things you cannot see the rubbish in... In Paris, they are just a bit of metal sticking up out of the ground with a bin liners held in place by a metal ring, usually white so you can see all the rubbish and the complementary 1000 butt ends just chucked on the floor next to them because the French do enjoy a smoke it seems, lol! But they just look awful, and again, your standing next to a touristy place, and they just whacked a poor excuse for a bin next to it, and if it's windy and the bag comes away, generally, there is just shite blowing everywhere. I could go on with Paris, but when they call it the City of Romance, lol, tell ya, I'd rather take the other half to Yemen! ;)

I've was there when I was 11,12, 13, 14, always in October. I'm 37 now and looking at this video isn't ehat I remember and it's a damn shame because it was my childhood memories. I'm from Dundee Scotland and never got to go abroad until I met my wife and started exploring the world first off Europe then now and always America been to every major city and going to New York was my dream Las Vegas was my wife's we went to New York at Xmas and best thing ever I felt like I completed something huge in life... that was for my 30th... took my misses to Vegas for hers went to florida inbetween them two years. We try precovid go away 4 times a year. But now... with the prices of everything not sure how we will manage to live that life. Daughter away to be 16 next year and still in mid to late 30s and my father passed and mums in end of life care... barely able.to have a date night now. Lovely video, we love the Winter gardens they are beautiful. The old post office deserves to be saved and regenerated as they too are lovely buildings unlike the old police station which will be better served being demolished!!! as much as there is some very nice modern architecture such as the lights in the shopping area many older buildings were just so much more attractive to look at. sad to see so many closed shops but its the same story up and down the whole of the UK. Was very sad to also see Bonny Street market looking anything but Bonny! we always enjoyed a stroll around that market and i really think a new outdoor old fashioned street market needs to be included in the regeneration if the stall holders are still out there to make use of it?

Just discovered your videos and subscribed straight away. When I first clicked on them I thought I was gonna find the standard judgey KZbinr taking the piss to be honest so I'm sorry about that lol 😆 But I like the way you focus on how grand these buildings still are and historically how valuable they are too. Went to Blackpool at Christmas time because the lights were on longer and we had a fun filled family night away I have to say so a fraction of the price that other places were for a family of 4 to visit. I've got a thing for faded grandeur as well. When we wandered away from the front though you could see how run down certain areas were and I did even say to my Husband " where is all the money going ?" 🤔 .

Well, I was thinking of running a hotel in Blackpool, but watching your videos has really helped me to decide against it. I can't afford to take the risk, and there's so much competition anyway. It's not the right time it seems. Looks like it could be a really fun place, though.

Thanks for the video. Some great footage of the Winter Gardens - what a lovely building - and the shopping precinct. Personally I've always found Blackpool the saddest seaside resort in the world. It always seems to be wet weather there whenever I've seen it, but maybe I'm just spoilt with Greece, Croatia or Portugal. A lot of Blackpool has also been ruined over the years by thoughtless building developers, that gigantic cube and its surroundings are simply awful to look at. Also, it's a shame to see so many buildings with boarded up windows. Why were there hardly any people in the streets? Was it Sunday? I hope this new development changes things for the better.

The remains of the pedestrian bridge at 01:58 were part of a walkway from the Hounds Hill shopping centre directly to the seaward side of the Promenade. There was no access for prams and pushchairs and it was easier - and quicker- to walk at gound level avoiding all the steps. It was designed in the standard 1970s in the new 'brutalist' style of concrete much loved by council planners at the time (and no one else). The Promenade was much enhanced when the bridge over the road and te tramtracks was was demolished.

This was standard Brutalist ideological fare - only cars and lorries at ground level, all pedestrians and access to buildings at 1st floor level for all new construction. Bristol had similar raised access that was intended to go right across the city including escalator blocks for access. It was never fully realised and all that remains now are a few metres of orphaned terrace that need to be kept to provide access to the few remaining buildings.

At 1.46 the footbridge alongside T.K.Maxx was part of the C & A store I opened in July 1974. Blackpool was much busier back in the 70/80/90s . The footbridge crossed to the Promenade and the building opposite hadn't been built! Now I'm 79 years old and living in South Wales; it's warmer down here! I'll check if I have some photos from '74

Aw I love Blackpool. Visit every year from Scotland. Shame about the market, visit this every time love the hussle and bussle. So many things to do never get bored. The town gets a reputation for being a dump but I will always have a soft spot for Blackpool. Seen so many acts on the piers back in the day, once saw the Nolans at the Winter Gardens lol. Beautiful building. Reality TV has killed off entertainment and has a lot to answer for. Saw your other video about the worst Hotel, once stayed the night in the Norbeck what a sh****le. Did look like it had been done up a bit in your video from when I was there a couple of years ago. Thanks for the video.

I was born in Blackpool and spent the first 26 years of my life there. It’s a town that’s deprived, a fair amount of poverty, but the people are salt of the earth and down to earth. The redevelopment of the town is well over due. Not just the front, but areas like Mereside, Grange Park, Revoe, Marton (Marton lad myself). Hopefully my hometown will start to get back to its former glory

Hi! Re your tour of the WINTER GARDENS. What you call the 'Spanish Hall' is actually the FLORAL HALL! You then went into the MAZZEI CAFE before going into the OPERA HOUSE. You probably couldn't gain access to the magnificent EMPRESS BALLROOM. Well done for what you have shown!

The elegance of the Winter Gardens, the Colonnades, the Tower. All of these truly beautiful creations are in stark contrast to the tat of nearby modern structures and the vulgarity of associated "entertainments". The Victorians were a classier bunch than us.

Edited to include I live 2 minutes from the sea in Clacton, I STILL come to Blackpool for my holidays! I have mentioned on someone else’s video, it’s worth parking up at your hotel and buying a weekly travel pass for just £14.00 Buses and trams are so frequent and take you virtually door to door. They’re even disabled accessible, wheelchairs and small disabled scooters are allowed on them too! Roll on May when I next visit my favourite holiday destination! I stay at a centrally situated hotel in Reads Avenue, for just £25 pppn B&B! Thanks David Murphy, see you for a short break in May and a week in October! Counting the days…
