The practice of photographing the dead is definitely not new. It was a big deal in the Victorian era. No it's possible that some of them may have thought that their souls would be in the portraits, but in reality it was more financially based. Photography was still something fairly new so cameras were not that widely found. Like any kind of tech that comes out it takes a while for the general populace to be able to get it. So it's not like they had a lot of pictures of their loved ones hanging around. And at this time disease was rampant. And many many children died of tuberculosis or pneumonia or some type of germ due to the lack of sanitation like we have today. So if one of the children or anybody dies a lot of time for the family, the only picture they have them is of them dead. fun fact also in the Victorian times if a family member died at home, which is usually how it works because nobody could afford a hospital, the practice was to carry them out feet first. Why they were very afraid that the person could turn his head back and look at somebody and basically possess them and bring them with him. I mean they also are the ones that cover mirrors because they think of the deceased souls are trapped in them, dolls were originally made to be vessels of the Dead. I find death practices absolutely fascinating. I have many more examples if anybody wants to hear.

It's really fun watching this movie for the second time, but from the perspective of the living people in the house. Because you can then see why they were so terrified of everything Nicole Kidman's character and her children were doing. Constantly shutting and locking doors, closing the curtains, shutting the piano, making the kids recite prayers on the stairs (imagine hearing a ghostly child's voice reciting the Lord's prayer).

Oh, and a quick note of related trivia: death photos were indeed a real thing, but they were often taken for a very practical reason rather than the superstitious one shared in the movie. Photography was expensive, so unless you were wealthy, it was uncommon to have pictures taken throughout your life. But once you died, it was the last chance. So, while it's creepy and weird by our standards, it was based on a very understandable motivation of remembrance and a desire to hold onto the memory of someone you loved.
@Mangolite3 ай бұрын
In those days, taking a photograph took a long time. As a result, the deceased are in focus, while the living relatives appear a bit blurry.

^Absolutely this! People usually treat death photos like some creepy thing, when they underestimate that a lot of grieving families and loved ones turned to them as mementos to help them process their loved one's passing. It's similar to how people will hold onto a lock of hair, a locket, etc.

_The Others_ is the last genuinely suspenseful ghost story ever made. Indirectly adapted from the late Victorian novella _The Turn of the Screw_ by Henry James, it stays true to the 19th century source material while bringing the setting forward to WW2. Grace reading from Genesis as the camera pans over candle-lit illustrations is among the best introductory sequences ever put to film. The scene where she goes to face the intruders, ascending the stairs while clutching her rosary, whispering the Lord's prayer, is magnificent. You can really feel her terror. _They_ are the ghosts, trapped in the very limbo she had warned her children about. There are subtle hints throughout the film as to what is really going on. In the beginning, Grace wakes up screaming; she was having a nightmare about suffocating her children. Mrs Mills tells Grace that grief can make people do the strangest things; Grace killed her children in a psychotic break after learning that Charles died. When we see Grace retrieve the shotgun, she pauses, as if remembering something; the last time she held it, she was committing suicide. Grace mentions that she is suffering migraines; she had shot herself in the forehead. Ann's breathing becomes laboured when she is agitated; the last thing the children would have experienced is the desperation to breathe as Grace smothered them. Grace mentions that the fog has never been so thick; it is the boundary of the limbo she is now imprisoned within, and she cannot venture beyond it, as Mrs Mills indicates.

The first, delirious and stunning, had a remake in the USA (Vanilla Sky) and the second is based on the Basque philosopher, writer and professor Miguel de Unamuno, at the door of the Spanish Civil War and Franco's fascism. PS: Amenábar won the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film, 1 Golden Globe and 14 Goyas with "Mar adentro" (The Sea Inside) with Javier Bardem in the main role.

I'm glad you watched this movie, as it's one of my favorites. Now for a side complaint: I despise the way subtitles are presented - to the degree, that I wish reactors never used them (unless they're actually hard of hearing). For example, the scene in which Anne kept claiming that Victor was opening the curtains: The audience is supposed to wonder if Anne is trying to trick her brother and doing Victor's voice herself. The director is so careful in the way the scene is paced to put doubt in the audience's mind. But then the captions read: "Victor" whenever Victor talks, basically removing one of the scene's possible interpretations. Captions always do this. They frequently just spill plot points that are clearly meant to be withheld from the viewer. (The last part of the finale of Season 1 of "The Last of Us" is another example, the part in the car.)
