So the whole reason the show has this sudden shift is, unsurprisingly, Disney. Dana Terrace, the creator, wanted to focus on the darker tone from the start but Disney pushed for the more slice of life story in season 1, wanting to focus more on the school and such. After season 1 though they seemed to back off a bit and allow her more creative freedom which my god, you will see just how dark this show gets.

It makes sense overall in the grand scheme of things too. We all know Disney LOVES its episodic “adventure of the week” episodes because those are the ones they have no problem replaying all the time where viewers won’t be like “wait when did this happen”. So younger viewers don’t click off when they realize they are missing things. So it’s best to have a whole lot of those episodes in season 1, where nothings too complicated and the stakes aren’t too high yet. Gives Disney the episodic content they need for regular reruns to leave you alone. And it’s not just a Disney thing. All these types of network need some plain old episodic things so they have stuff to rerun and not risk alienating new viewers. One well known example of this is Steven Universe. Cartoon Network regularly forced Rebecca Sugar to make more episodic episodes than story-based and literally had a quota for them.

Tbh I actually like that approach. When things are light hearted first, it makes you appreciate even more when it gets darker (similar thing happened in Hitman Reborn). You also get some nice moments to meet characters before shit hits the fan.

I know there’s actual marketing reasons for why the shows tone shifts when it does but I also love the thematic tone shift following luz’s view of this world. Season 1 Luz was very naive and optimistic about the boiling isle and it took her while to get her footing. Grom is when she really starts to feel confident in her abilities and knowledge of this world, and then everything with the emperor tone shifts very dark as she learns truths about this new home of hers.
