In which John takes you behind the scenes of the movie adaptation of his novel Paper Towns, introducing you to the director, producer, and cast members Jaz Sinclair (Angela), Justice Smith (Radar), and Halston Sage (Lacey). Also there is a brief attempt to expand the definition of octothorpe.
YAY YAY YAY I am so excited that the Paper Towns movie is really happening and everybody here is so nice and yay.

Are we just not gonna talk about the fact that someone hung a coat hanger...*on* a coat hanger?
@schmittelt

Ever make a coat hanger mobile and hang it from a hook on the ceiling designed for holding a potted plant? I've done it once. It was an exciting thought when I conceived of it, but just like a snowman, the fun was over once the project was completed.

Well of we know john green, it's probably a metaphor. Things hold on to things that are close to them and similar in some ways, and this holds them back from doing what they where supposed to do, idk its john green ♡

***** I like that interpretation. When I did it, I was just having fun. The flip side of that is once we accept that we're holding on to each other, we can then create something greater than we could have done alone.

schmittelt I woke up this morning and, like always after a stupid long night at work, checked youtube for the first time in about 20 hours. Most of my feed sadly contained wonderful creations by very cool people that I would most likely never watch with my limited time (DAMN YOU 12 HR WORK DAYS!). But then there was the vlogbrothers so, of course, I clicked it. Watching a vlogbrothers video is a lot like taking pure "Happy". I mean sometimes the videos are actually happy and sometimes they are sad and sometimes... well... they are all about the giraffe sex. Oh giraffe sex, how I love thee. But the mere act of watching these wacky corning campy thoughtful insightful videos almost is a charm that makes any day better so I did. After which, as I'm often prone to do, I looked to the comments and found this one at the top of the list. Now vlogbrother comments are an assorted grab-bag of experience and conciseness generally directed to the good found in humanity though often with differing viewpoints on how to obtain that good. Some, however, are filled with so much pure awesome there can be no other words for what was typed. This is the case with this comment. Now like a real "Thoughts from Places" video I could wax poetic forever about the greatness of the brothers Green or the community that has sprung up around them, but work calls and I'm not dressed so instead all I have left is: I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two hangers clung together, and I- I saw meaning while passing by, And strangers and friends made all the difference.

Paper Towns movie! Oh my god! There's black Santas and Nerdfighter casting and oh my god. The line, "IT IS NOT MY FAULT THAT MY PARENTS OWN THE WORLD'S LARGEST COLLECTION OF BLACK SANTAS" will be uttered on a movie screen in what I'm sure will be a hit movie. Even though I'm slightly disappointed Hank Green isn't playing Margo Roth Spiegelman (I'm sure he had other pressing commitments), I'm sure it will be yet another awesome movie going experience for Nerdfighteria! I'm counting down the days. In the meantime, I will just reread Paper Towns and get really excited about it to people around me who have no clue what I'm talking about. Nerdfighters!

So, wait... Paper Towns is filming in North Carolina, and then John mentioned Homeland, which films in Charlotte, which is where I live. So I googled, and Paper Towns is being filmed in Charlotte O_O which means John is probably here RIGHT NOW O_O and I just saw the casting call for extras, but it was October 18, and now my hopes for getting on set are severely thrashed T_T Luckily, many movie people & TV people that film here hang out around the same places, so maybe I'll get a chance encounter at some point *_*

Im quite surprised this book is getting made into a movie, i thought LFA would have been considered first. Honestly, i didn't really like Paper Towns when I finished it. The start was alright but I found the rest quite dragged out ( i kept reading because i was told that it would get better) and the whole story was a huge build up to an ending which didn't live up to what I was imagining. The ending sort of made the whole book a waste of time. But nevertheless, I'm still going to go and see the movie. I love all of the casting choices, exactly how I imagined the characters! They will probably make the movie a bit more exciting than the book, I hope. I am excited to see how they go about it and also give Nat Wolff his time to shine!

Man. On Friday, I wrote a Timehop-inspired, reflective blog about a period of time when _Paper Towns_ was newly out, and had just put John Green on the _New York Times_ bestseller list. And now to see the _Paper Towns_ movie officially getting made...wow. I have no real words other than "wow." Possibly other phrases, such as "holy carp," "what the what," and "asdfnvakseib;nalksdva;eoiruw84ntbpo" also spring to mind. But really, it all comes down to, "wow." Our community has come a long way. John and his stories have come a very long way. I'm excited to see this movie, and I'm excited to see people loving this movie (as I've no doubt it will be excellent). And, of course, I'm excited to see what sort of new Nerdfighters this movie will bring into the fold.

I'm not of the group of people who absolutely worship TFIOS and its movie adaptation. Do I like and treasure it? Yes. Do I think it's the end all be all of John Green books? No. Even though it's not my favorite story or movie, I am GREATLY thankful to its success. It proved to the film industry what we knew all along, namely that John Green writes good stories and that we will see them if they are made. It paved the way for the Paper Towns movie (which I've been hoping for for YEARS, omg) and hopefully many more John Green adaptations to follow. tldr; Even if you didn't love TFIOS, be thankful for it. Its success is the reason we're getting Paper Towns and any adaptations hereon.

I am also very excited for the Paper Towns movie like the incredible amount of disorganized excitement that is in this video is only about a third of the amount of equally disorganized excitement that I am feeling for this movie. Paper Towns literally (and I mean literally as in the actual definition of the word. not as in, I literally fangirlled to death) changed my life. I think it made me think about the way I think more (that's an awkward sentence), and it forced me to remember that people think of themselves differently than I imagine they do. So excitement is higher than puff levels. I should be doing homework

I don't know why people keep insisting that this movie can't be made. More than half the country now lives where gay marriage is legal, so come on. I think this WILL happen eventually, and hopefully, sooner rather than later...although I'm hoping not before Yulin Kuang is ready to direct a major motion picture and has made her way to be chosen as the director, because it will then be perfect. I also love that all the females in this book are portrayed as an intelligent people, even though they aren't the main character! I know the movie is going to be great! I promise to force all my friends and family to watch this movie, twice. Your a genius John green! Keep up the awesomeness. (Also, please visit Australia. We don't bite, everything else does)

Okay, watching the bits of TFiOS moviemaking that we got to see was exciting and really cool but Paper Towns is actually legitimately my favorite book and suddenly it just hit me that my favorite book is going to exist in A WHOLE OTHER FORM and....and I don't know how to handle this?! I'm excited but almost stressfully excited? I remember when Paper Towns movie was a maybe thing, a few years ago or whenever that was, but it never got real enough to be an actual thing so I never had this OH MY GOD moment before. It's not like it's my book, so it's not like I have any kind of RIGHT to be a little bit terrified but I am definitely a little bit terrified. In a good way, but.... Just, French the llama this is...ahhh. Also, octothorpe is a brilliant term for a space intended for further creation.

YESSS! I am so excited for Paper Towns. When I read the book it was like any other good book, wasn't my favorite book or anything... But afterwards I found myself coming back to it when thinking about stuff about life and realized how many valuable lessons I'd learned from it without even realizing it. So Paper Towns ended up changing my life much more than most books, especially because of the lesson about imagining people complexly. I had never really understood that about people before reading the book.

It means they're one of the producers. It's actually 2 terms - "executive" (somebody who makes decisions) and "producer" who organises, raises funds, makes things happen. It's a very important job with films :)

Actually, executive producer is mostly just a fancy accreditation for someone who's made a large contribution (commonly monetary but maybe in John's case, being the actual writer of the original book). They don't really have a job on set :)

I was super disappointed by the casting of Margo because she was physically described as curvy and short in the book. Cara doesn't fit any of those descriptions... I would have loved for Hollywood to introduce an independent woman that was not supermodel skinny/perfect and just a normal teenager. I also can't imagine Cara as a high school senior. I would have loved for Mae Whitman to have gotten the role because of her amazing acting skills and figure that fits the way Margo was described as.
@KylieInPortland
@KylieInPortland 10 жыл бұрын
i can see where you're coming from but oddly enough, despite john's literary description of Margo, i pictured Margo looking more like Cara... idk why, just something in my real life experiences w/ girls like Margo made her look differently in my head. So i can see where people are upset about the casting choice but to me Cara's look and especially her personality are a match for Margo.

Why'd you have to point that out to me. I was just being happy that we were going to have a movie with POC characters that white people would watch. Assuming they actually do a good job of that. But I will hold off judgments of the movie until I, you know, actually see it. Side note, I love Mae Whitman in everything ever.
@abbyolivia7908
@abbyolivia7908 10 жыл бұрын
The thing is, none of us has actually seen Cara act. So to say that she is not how you picture her is judging her solely based off of looks and therefore implying that fitting the right "image" is more important for an actor than understanding and portraying the character in a way that is relatable and important.
@mermaidismyname
@mermaidismyname 10 жыл бұрын
Abby V. I would tend to agree, if there was any chance that a female character written as tall and thin were sometimes cast as not tall or thin. But that is not the case. The problem is not that in this specific instance a thin girl was cast. The problem is that in almost every instance a thin girl is cast. This is why casting someone with a different hair color than a character in a book is not an issue, because people are not disenfranchised by their hair color. But casting an Asian character as white? That's an issue. And it's the same with body type.
@mermaidismyname
@mermaidismyname 10 жыл бұрын
Abby V. Besides, it's almost universally said to actors that just because you didn't get the part doesn't mean you didn't rock your audition - it means you aren't what the casting director was looking for. One of my friend's desperately wanted to be cast as a kid in a play we were in together, but he's over six feet tall and bulky. He was cast as the dad, and pretty much told to get used to it because he would continue to be typecast as a dad and other tall people roles. So image does matter.

Did the screenwriter just call John a guy who "...read the book." Did he not know who was talking to him? You would think it would be a great complement to have the author of a book tell some guys who simplified his masterpiece that they did a good job and that they would know who he his when he is standing in front of them. But John is a humble man and that is why we love him.

I know you weren't only speaking about John, so I said "the authors". I hear and understand your frustration with not feeling represented in mainstream media. When we are represented, it's not often in a positive light. I just encourage you not to give up hope, and not to get distracted from enjoying the beauty of certain media because of it's lack of a black female. Historically, there are many human rights that black people had to fight for, and there's been a lot of progress. If we could make it through that, we can def handle the fight to be positively included in mainstream media :)

It's ridiculous that you & your daughter had to experience that! Think of it as a blessing in disguise-no agency with that kind of mindset deserves to work with her. Their loss! Every time you guys have those negative experiences, it saves you from being connected to people that don't have your best interest at heart. That's great because it leaves you free to find the people who do! Don't let the ignorance of others stop you and your daughter from putting your best feet forward & realizing your dreams. Things won't always be like this.

John mentioned in another video (maybe on hankgames???) that different studios owned the rights to different films. Back in 2007-2008, John was writing the screenplay for Paper Towns (which had been optioned by the same group who produced Juno, mentioned on vlogbrothers), but it never panned out. Somehow, LFA's film rights are owned by Paramount (I think) and John has 0% control over what happens to that material... Fellow nerdfighters, this is my very fuzzy memory of events.
