Lucy Saxon in this is very underrated, she’s in two episodes, has like 10 lines of dialogue for the whole thing and goes from power hungry fame hungry girlfriend to completely broken, mentally destroyed, physically abused shell of her former self who ends up killing her husband. The complete empty look on her face for this whole episode and the bruises on her face. Such a grim story for her

Although I'm sorry Martha left (and wasn't recognized at the time as the wonderful companion she was), I'm glad she left by her own choice and on her own terms.

@@HuntingViolets Yeah, I remember reading a lot of great fanfics back in the day that explored the Jones' complicated relationship with the Doctor, especially because of that death scene with the Master. Yes, in the end, the Doctor saved them all, but the Doctor also seemed to emotionally value the Master's life more than anyone's -- including their badass daughter's. It was like if you're not the Master (or even Rose), the Doctor doesn't care as much about you. Plus, add in the fact that the Master had enslaved (and tortured) the Jones family for a year (while making them wear maid costumes, which had some unfortunate racial/class undertones, on top of all that) and, yeah...just so frustrating.

@@NicoleM_radiantbaby I'm not sure the Doctor in this incarnation cared that much about Rose until she was gone. He was willing to let her go to the other universe till she came back and refused. He abandoned her and Mickey on the spaceship with the clockwork people and was willing to take the slow path with Reinette and just, I don't know, hope he could somehow time getting back with them before they were killed. He didn't seem to worry about it much.

That scene with The Doctor holding The Master and begging him to regenerate has made me tear up and cry so many times. It's amazing that despite The Master being such an unempathetic character with basically 0 redeeming qualities yet still have such an emotional death because you understand how much he means to The Doctor. The Doctor wiped out his entire race, an act he feels an immense amount of guilt over and now he finally has a chance to make things right with the only other Time Lord left, his former childhood friend. Because even after all the terrible things The Master has done, there is that sense of kinship between them, that shared understanding that no one else but another Time Lord is capable of having with The Doctor. And it all slips away in his arms as The Master chooses not to regenerate, partly to spite The Doctor and escape what he perceives as being trapped with him, but also partly to free himself from the maddening drums that had haunted him since birth due to the Time Lord's messed up and abusive academic initiation rituals.

Such a great season. Martha is the GOAT. Obviously she's capable enough to save the world but then after all that. She can evaluate her own worth and once the jobs been done and shes helped everyone she can. Shes mature enough to walk away and take on board all shes learned to help even more people. She is just absolutely golden and is certainly the best companion. She doesnt need to stand by the doctor marvelling about how wonderful and wise he is.

She is my second favourite companion in New Who after a certain next companion. I do think she is probably the most underrated and capable companion in recent years. Not just what she had to deal with, but a lot of it without the Doctor to help her.

It's subtle, but Lucy has a black eye which suggests the Master was physically abusive towards her (not to mention mentally). For an entire year she lived aboard the Valiant. No way out, nobody to turn to, completely powerless against a man who has total control over the entire planet. The Doctor's philosophy of forgiveness may be admirable, but in a situation like that, well-intentioned words mean nothing. After all the physical and psychological torment she went through, I don't blame her for pulling the trigger.

Martha is definitely a companion that has become more popular over the years - the writers did her dirty through a lot of the season having her pining after The Doctor a little too much, but rewatching years later she became one of my favourite companions - she's smart, confident, and is constantly saving the day, even without The Doctor. I do love her goodbye scene in this episode though, she takes herself away and you root for her doing it, I just wish the 'lovesick puppy' trope wasn't quite as prevalent.

I'm still mad how it made a number of fans hate Rose and lying about how often the Doctor talked about her. He mentioned her of his own accord exactly *once* in the entire series, all the way back in the second episode. Every other time it was someone else mentioning her and him responding. I had a bit of a grudge against Martha back in those days because I love Rose as a character, and she was getting crapped on because Martha couldn't get over the fact that he liked someone else before her. I still have moments of rolling my eyes at her, like in "Utopia" when she was getting snippy over the fact that Jack and the Doctor were happy that Rose wasn't DEAD (did she expect them not not care that Rose is alive??), but other than that, she was good.

I agree to a point, but on second viewing, I think you see real growth from Human Nature where she had to take the lead and this 3 parter where she saved the world. She was always smart and capable, though, even though pining after the Doctor could be a bit annoying. My 2nd favourite companion after a certain next companion in new Who.

The huge difference between the end of season 2 and 3 is underlining hope. After rose, it can take a minute to be ready for the next season. The idea of moving on is hard. Martha’s season is about being ready to move on and we get to finally do that with Martha. We are left with hope for things to come.

If you think about it, it makes sense. Consider that after millions of years of coming back to life in a body that has a limit, the body eventually becomes deformed. Jack being the Face of Boe explains how he knew about Yana. But it's also possible that Moffat was using a fan theory about the Face of Boe. It wouldn't be the first time he did it...

I forget exactly by whom but one of the show-runners confirmed-The face of Boe is indeed, the ultimate fate of Jack. After an unfathomable amount of time passed. I’ll also note a an event takes place that offers a credible explanation for how a process begins that might lead to that result happens… many, many episodes from now.

Barrowman couldn't make the filming, though (I think he was shooting Arrow at the time), so that step in Jack's evolution was left undefined.

I was happy to see you cry at Martha's parting speech. it makes me cry every time. *this* is why we had all those scenes of jealousy during the season - so that this scene can hit us that much harder. Martha remains my favourite companion - she was strong, but she also had a heart and she kept calm and carried on... until she had had enough. and then she left, on her own terms, with her head held high, and knowing that without her, the world would literally not be the same. when I grow up, I want to be Martha!

The Toclafane reveal is an understated detail that in my opinion just worked perfectly with this whole trilogy and really elevated them beyond the average monster. Apart from them being obviously reminiscent of Cybermen and Daleks alike, there's the way the Master effectively became a distorted nightmare version of the Doctor's usual approach; A timelord arrived in the Tardis and saved the entire human race when all hope was lost.

Back when this was new, there was a Harold Saxon website with extra stuff, including some Lucy backstory things. Her name being Lucy Cole, and how she's the daughter of the Lord of Tarminster, she met the Master when he was publishing his autobiography. I'm such a Lucy apologist, she was hypnotised and manipulated and gaslit and abused and tormented, she never deserved what happened to her, and she was manipulated into supporting him. And now she's just been abandoned.

Both David Tennant and John Barrowman (Jack) are huge DW fans since they were little boys and to be at the show - a dream come true for them. When the script came about the Face of Boe they went completely bonkers. 😅 Barrowman used to tell that he was at the open window when this episode was aired waiting and listening for - quote - “the nations jaw to drop” 😅😅😅 In the scene of the Master dying David literally acted his a..s off, he was breaking your heart to pieces there and he will again - he is on hell of an actor.

It was always going to be a hard job to replace Rose , but Martha proved up to it . Great acting by Freema throughout the series , but this was a great send off for her and a different level .John Simm was a suitably deranged Master and we got more about the relationship between the Time Lords . Martha and her family being the only ones to remember explained her decision to leave nicely leaving the Tardis doors ajar slightly for the future . Jack ending his days as the Face of Boe sounds logical if you think about it perhaps . Anyway I enjoyed Ugo summing up . There is a Children in need short he might find interesting before the Christmas special which he's timed to perfection . We should be so lucky .

Please tell me you've also seen Time Crash? That David didn't know it at the time he was acting alongside his future father-in-law is mind breaking. Never forget, as you bop along to the Who theme music, that it was composed by an Aussie. :D And yes, finding out the Toclafane are humans was the biggest revelation of this episode. :D :P The ending of this season got a lot of flak, as people seemed to despise the Doctor as "Space Jesus". Maybe it was because the solution was too simple, but it's the sort of thing the show has done since the classic era, maybe just not to this scale. As for the Face of Boe revelation, don't forget he was around in the year 200 100, meaning Jack kept changing and growing for hundreds of thousands of years. Then he lasted until New Earth, in the year 5 000 000 000 which, of course, he how Boe knew there was another Time Lord, as jack remembered everything that happened with the Doctor.

Love with the titanic scene how they added in 3 distinct bell rings, this was what the lookouts on the titanic did when they saw any object dead ahead, and off course that means they did that when they spotted the ice iceberg. Now the season is over; I like to believe from this season that the Doctor kept Martha at bay on purpose, maybe seeing her desires (not a hot take, I know), be it quiet tactless & him believing that his somewhat "coldness" he gave her through this season was the only effective way for a companion to leave in a healthy way when time is due; without it ever be too much of that emotional struggle of a painful choice/none-choice clouded by overly-attachment or romantic fascination. Maybe he wants to be able to see a companion leave with less of two broken hearts and all this nastiness of too much co-dependency, & he failed at trying this! Now, a the end of this episode he regrets not having more time with her as companion as a result? Her leaving WAS painful and, unsuccessfully for him, her decision to quit is shaped by those feelings of fascination, because, unlike with Rose, the love and desires went far too much unaddressed. I think there's a BIG failure on the Doctor's part to try and shape it into a strong friendship, talk about where they are at, and build kinship away from romantic feelings. But, you know, he still has a lot to learn like all of us; That's a good thing for a character. Martha here realises she can have what she wants on earth with people that don't keep her at bay. She sort of gotten everything out of this what was possible; saving the world, see the universe, but not the warmth of love OR devoted friendship? Personally (subjective), I don't see or maybe I don't want to see the Doctor as too much of a romantic being and I don't ship them with companions - yes, that does sometimes frustrate me watching some reactors on YT be all in on shipping, but again it's subjective, and the show has many writers and I can imagine they differ in opinions on that as well. I always hope for a deep friendship-kinship to develop with companions instead. I really love Martha and I also like that they showed the Doctor in this season struggle with knowing what he wants from companionship after Rose. EDIT; I want to add that sexuality and romantic feelings can be a messy experience and I'm not clear-cut against the idea of the Doctor being able to feel these things.

I don't really see any comparison with Martha and Ruby they are totally different characters Martha is a 20s something Dr. Graduate and has her real family Ruby is 19 and doesn't have a job yet as far as we seen and more vulnerable than Martha was and she was adopted I don't see the comparison in that at all other than their companions of the Doctor.

I thought the Dobby the house elf doctor and floaty diety doctor were kinda lame. Glad you liked it. Maybe just the fx, made me not like it. But then seconds later I’m crying with the doctor when the other last time lord dies. And the Face of Boe? Holy cow that was amazing. Go back and watch the cat nun episodes. And realize this is Jack. The interaction of the Doctor and Master also gives us an inkling of just how powerful Time Lords are. The Doctor plays human but Time Lords are far more powerful. It’s scary what they could do! Scary what he could do but chooses nothing to.

Good reaction. Besides the killing for fun being pretty dull, they could have gone about it better, oh older get killed by younger years later and oh the craziness and no actual safe place in the end so madness, it's kind of cheap. That and the reaching for the time agent device at the treehouse pockets, the rest is pretty good. Face of Boe is such a good detail, but then again Cassandra being last human..... They go that way that far in the future. So second last human I guess? No idea. A lot of interesting details, the fake out gun, the messaging to use the satellites was great. Ah Martha and well saving people and also saying yep Doctor didn't see her interest in him and well got her family/regular life to lead now. Next Christmas special incoming. Martha returns but when dun dun dun.

Yes, her family played a huge part in her decision to leave, but imo, the main reason was realizing there was a human male that she could admire almost as much as the Doctor, and he is even a doctor, and the chemistry between them promised such a wealth of real connection, but as EQUALS. The intelligent choice, yet made with a lot of emotions and oh, so much hope!
