"The illusion of choice" is so relevant nowadays, as we have plenty of "choices" all the time. People think that more is better, while in reality in mainly creates envy and discontentment.

I disagree with the premise, more choices just means a greater capacity to attain an ideal outcome. I think it would be more accurate to characterize the issue as "analysis paralysis", a neurotic cognitive distortion predicated on unrealistic perfectionism. Meditation, specifically Breathwork, is the best way to deal with neurosis and enhance metacognition, this way considering your options remains in the realm of rational contemplation as opposed to harmful rumination. To further illustrate the point a person could hypothetically be in a situation where the choice is completely binary but if the underlying anxiety still permeates their thought process they could still remain mired in indecision. However, we all have an infinite amount of potential action we can take in any given situation, outside of relatively static material constraints, our internal world and the relationship we have between our consciousness and reality is extremely dynamic. This is why I take issue with premeditated techniques for working around these issues, it fails to address the fundamental patterns at issue in regards to their psychological and neurological roots and only does a modest job of managing the symptoms. Ultimately, the contrivances of this kind of self manipulation become apparent and the method loses power as the individual finds themselves deeper in the type of problematic scenarios they were seeking to avoid in the first place.

When I was a kid in the 1960's we had 2 sneaker choices...lace-up or slip-on. Nobody cared since the goal was playing not prancing around like a runway model trying to get oohs from your peers. We made our points on the streets.

I spend much time in bed due to pain and have a home cinema too, so I got Netflix which kept me entertained for a while. Then got Stan. Followed by Kayo, Binge, Prime, Apple and recently Disney plus. (and spotify for music)... But now it takes too long to find the best movie or tv series. I should artificially choose a time limit and not watch things for a few minutes to choose something else. And only watch science fiction and cut out the rest. And be satisfied rather than worrying about watching the best from all of the services. another good video and book summary

To many people it is very important that they have choice in their lives. Some people vigorously fight to defend their right to choose. In many ways, however, we seem to have a lot less choice than we think and, ironically, it could be the most important aspects of our lives in which we have the least choice of all

I like the idea and the message, but I like being adventurous from time to time, and 'making the same decisions' doesn't give me new experiences in life, I'd rather try something new, and if it doesn't exceed my earlier choice I'll just be grateful that I always picked something better in the first place then... But good points tho :))! (Satisfier* not Satisficer)

My decision? Not to choose at all and watch a video on "7 books that Changed My Life," at the end of which I clicked to watch this video. Too many choices :) .

Finally a clear explanation of why it makes me laugh whenever people say "being vegan must be so hard" but I personally feel my life is so much simpler and easier than theirs. not so much for the lack of food choices (as you can make pretty much any food from scratch using plant-based ingredients) but mainly because I've removed 99% of restaurants and take-outs from my daily choice list and we no longer spend 1.5-2 hours a day just deciding what to order for dinner. All the 20+ ads in my face daily for mcdonalds and other food places don't register in my brain as options, just visual static. same goes for clothing, beauty and hygiene products. So many variables that used to factor into my daily decision making turned out to be pointless and now I mostly go with 2: not cruel + does the job. freed up so much RAM in this tired old brain.

This is bullshit for me tbh. Just settling makes me miserable. I'm built for exploration and curiosity, trying new things and striving to be better makes me happy. I am not terribly materialistic but I always want to try new things and go new places. Just settling for a job I'm 51% happy at kind of neglects the purpose of being alive, which for me is to strive to be as happy as I can and to avoid being unhappy whenever I can.
