A psychopath 'drained' my late husband's life 2 years ago after years of various forms of manipulation and torture! We'd known him for 24 years - my husband considered him a friend in spite of some odd/inappropriate behaviors. It's been a nightmare - caring for my dying husband (poisoned) for 2 1/2 years and coming to realize who had planned and acted in various ways to cause his death. There are many people like this - we need to be on our guard! The 'demon' I've described is active in his church - even preaches sometimes!

When I was still a child I tried to wrap my head around how my family functioned. We didn't have terms like narcissists or psychopaths back then. I figured, in my family, we were divided in two groups: the ones who took and the ones who gave.

I didn't even realize that the narc was preying on my finances, my professional network, my social circle, my name... even now that we're separated, he's trying to get his hands on payment for work I'm doing 100% on my own. It's so disgusting once you finally see through the BS about 'the dynasty we were building together', how he could 'sell sand to the desert' but never seemed to be able to keep a job or stick to a business. How can you have all of the ambition but none of the skills or work ethic?

All of this is pretty chilling but I would like to add that psychopaths can also seem to perform in social situations a bit like robots with a learned script which can fail them sometimes when their behaviour/words don't seem to match the nuances of the situation or conversation. I think the average person, once armed with education or experience of these types, can begin to detect these patterns of behaviour and thus disengage from them ASAP.

@@einstein63 Yes, they are the ones who can’t read the room and will casually say something that leaves everyone else frozen with their mouths open in disbelief. And of course the psychopath may not even appear to realize they’ve just said something far out of the norm.

100% once we see it it becomes easier to spot but the creepy part is they know that we can see through them. I feel like they either become very fixated on us with an intent to undermine us or they scurry like fleas from pesticides.

I used to think my ex husband was just narcissistic: that he believed he was entitled to status that he had not earned. Now I see his psychopathic, parasitic tendencies as well: he felt entitled to my resources as well: my income, my assets, etc. and was never willing to pull his weight.

Garnering sympathy has become a red flag in general since learning about how to live abuse free. It's not always sinister when I feel sympathy for someone but I do have to apply a lot of reflection on whether it is a manipulation tactic.

@@llhannah9297 It is a spiritual battle going on so l do think as above so below. Doing a major parasite cleanse along with spiritual and emotional work could be beneficial. Then again a narcissist does not think there is anything to improve upon as they are perfect and everyone else is flawed.

I think predator is a more apt description of a psychopath whereas parasite better fits the narcissist. The psychopath can go from prey to prey simply acquiring what is needed and moving on, but the narcissist wants a host to provide narcissistic supply over time.

Interesting comment! As I listened to his succinct description of a psychopath as a parasite I tried to classify my father as Type 1 & my partner as Type 2. Both actually stayed with their first partners for decades, so it’s difficult to see them as moving on for supply, but remember the narcissistic trifecta is always sex/cash/show. Although most narcs are autoerotic & possibly gay, they need feedback about their wonderful sexual performance or power over another… however, money seems to trump (pun intended) their supply line as they age. Surprisingly a show of normality, as in a monogamous heterosexual union, can be very important to previous generations, so even boomers can cling to the marriage. Since narcissists are incredibly insecure & more neurotic than psychopaths, it’s really difficult to decide… but certainly the psychosis worsens with age & eventually cannot be hidden from the public.

Thank you for your brillant observations Darren. Psychopaths are more common than we think. Many people live parasitic lives and live by the rule that end justifies the means. Cold, calculated cruel, entitled, exploitative yet superficially charismatic, charming and allegedly full of concern and care for the greater good and well being of others. Lies and manipulation all along. I have been dealing with it for many years now.

Yes, I’m a victim of diagnosed psychopath ( F1)- pure horror! But I’m trying to look at the good side of the holocaust torture and senseless abuse I experienced; I’m alive, free and I learned so so much! This lesson money can’t buy and I turned this experience into something so significant for me. Today I’m grateful for what I have ( and I have so much- I’m not hungry, nor homeless and I’m free) and I don’t worry about I don’t have and any really not important things. Who survived a psychopath will see the world like never before and be grateful for every little thing that they never even noticed before. You will strive and I wish you the only very best!

Think of them as quadruplets. A quad may differ from the other three, and this may be true of each of the other three, as well, but each is far more like the others than would be true of four ordinary siblings.

I am not a professional. But I was married to a diagnosed psychopath for 3 years, and I have known people with each. Narcissists, psychopaths, and sociopaths all lack empathy and can be superficially charming. Here are the differences I have learned. Sociopaths: are more power motivated like psychopaths but they tend to be the easiest to spot of the 3 because they are more chaotic. Sociopathy is also known as Type 2 Psychopathy mentioned in this video. Sociopaths are usually in and out of jail their whole lives. They are more impulsive. You won’t find a sociopath in the corporate world. They tend to be too chaotic to hold down a job for long. They usually grew up in really rough, chaotic environments where these traits were encouraged. Sociopaths are the people that will think, “oh I need money. Let me just rob this gas station real quick”. Psychopaths: technically fall under the same disorder as sociopaths but psychopaths have better impulse control. Sociopaths and psychopaths are both power motivated. They like money to gain more power. They like to have power over other people. Psychopaths play the long game. They can excel in their careers. Psychopaths were usually chaotic like sociopaths in their youth but they learned how to control it because that is the easiest way to gain the most power. Psychopaths have a dysfunctional nervous system where they do not experience the “fight or flight” response. They don’t feel anxiety or nervousness. Psychopaths are impossible to spot. Even after being married to a psychopath, I still would not be able to spot one. Psychopaths usually also have narcissistic personality disorder so there is a lot of overlap, but they don’t need to be the center of attention like narcissists. They don’t have the same fragile ego narcissists have. Psychopaths know they are the best. Our marriage counselor said being married to a psychopath makes marriage to a narcissist look like a walk in the park. I feel that. Narcissists: are all ego motivated, instead of power motivated. Narcissists want to gain money just to look better. They tend to project a cocky exterior to protect a fragile ego underneath. Narcissists feel extreme jealousy, unlike sociopaths and psychopaths. Narcissists can also have a low level of empathy, guilt, and remorse. Vs. Psychopaths have no empathy, guilt, or remorse. You may find a narcissist crying and apologizing to keep you around. You will rarely find this in a sociopath or psychopath. Sadists: sadists just means someone gets enjoyment / satisfaction from hurting others. Any of the above disorders can also be sadists. They also may not be sadists. They may not enjoy hurting people, they just don’t care when their actions do hurt others. Hope that helps!

I just watched the documentary about Lois Riess on Crave last night.. wow does she ever fit these characteristics!! Everything from the superficial charm and attractiveness to lure in unsuspecting people to the manipulation to get what she wanted. And finally used them parasitically with zero compassion or empathy. The crazy thing is that she didn't seem to truly show these characteristics until she was in her 50's.

Now that I'm older and I wouldn't tolerate an ounce of their behavior it's unbelievable how I had to slowly learn. It is very scary the people I've known. I ONLY had psychopaths close to me. After my son passed and his psychopath father passed that let the psychos from when I was 15 contact me. Because they were afraid of my husband. They stalked my husband and I dating and he literally kicked them right up the center to permanently damage. I'm tired. Out of curiosity i talked to the driver of the psycho. History he had older parents mom came from Russian exile as a toddler she was 4ft 10in. He was weaving into the conversation the technique they use for diminishing you. To gain power.They figure if they lower you enough they can bait you. Now im like a seasoned psychiatrist. 😊

Wow, you are extremely critical of your "friend"! When you're thinking about Karma, you need to remember to look in the mirror. I think you have really forgotten the saying "love is blind." She probably was love- bombed all the way to the altar, as I was. I'd never even heard of narcissism or love bombing. Try cutting people some slack instead of being so judgmental it feels like you chopped her head off.

@@yvetteandjorgenlarsen9753 wow maybe I should’ve given an explanation. I’ve known my friend since she was six. She’s an alcoholic and we both came from abusive homes. She is known for her cruelty but I saw so much more in her. She’s heavily degreed and a member of Mensa, so very intelligent. I started dating someone years ago who at the time drove a truck and had lost his job. She said to me “how disgusting I would never date someone who drives a truck and doesn’t have a job.“ Of course he eventually got another job and who cares if someone drives a truck. she very much is concerned with image so to her the car mattered. She’s very entitled and grew up very spoiled. She reconnected with a guy we all grew up with who at 50 years old was driving a truck that mom and dad made the payments on, while living at home with mom and dad and who has never held a job or made his own money or owned a home or a car at age 50. my friend at the time they connected was in AA for 10 years and her life had gotten back on track. We had a great relationship because she was no longer drinking. It was actually really nice until she connected with this giant loser. He called her of course because she has money and the very first time they went out of course she paid for everything and that same night he coincidentally said he had a fight with his mom and asked if he could stay in her guest room. He never left. He treated her like dirt and yet she pushed him and pushed him to marry her. I tried as did many others so hard to intervene and point her to help, and even her own therapist told her that if she married this guy, the therapist would have to discontinue therapy with her. I’m guessing that Therapist drew the line because abuse was involved so when someone willingly walks into an abusive relationship and stays I guess the therapist had had enough. This person is very judgmental of other people and yet she will turn around and do the very thing that she criticizes others for doing and it’s a very mind-boggling dynamic. It sounds very coldhearted what I said but decisions like this impact everyone around them. I was her maid of honor. Every time they had a fight it was me she called. She would text me 20 to 50 times a day telling me how awful he was and yet she stayed. She finally called the police on him and had him thrown in jail and all of this drama was causing chaos in her family and in our relationship. It was like watching somebody walk right into a freight train and you can’t do anything to help them. Of course, she went back to him and then blamed me for getting “too involved“ then she literally smeared my name, telling everyone that I was jealous of their love. The classic statement. This is not the first time I have been through this with her and toxic men. This is a pattern. I started looking at myself, asking many questions as to why I would be drawn to someone like this, who every time I try to help, she treats me like dirt and I recognized the pattern in my own family and the toxicity of these people that I myself was drawn to. I got into therapy and for the last 10 years have been healing from a terribly abusive childhood and toxic childhood. She and I bonded because we had the same similar upbringing. I went through hell and back with this person. She didn’t like what I was saying when I told her she needed to be strong and break free and then as a result, she would discard me for months even years. She would always come back to the friendship and I would always take her back. Over and over and over. That’s on me now and I recognize that. There are countless people that she drew into her circle and then when they served no purpose or told her things she didn’t want to hear her she would discard them as if they were trash. I’m sure my comment sounded cruel without the back story. Oh, and this guy when she connected with him had four DWI’s and a criminal trespassing charge. She willingly went into this and let him accuse her of being the raging alcoholic, basically projecting his own loser behavior onto her, and because she just can’t work through her trauma and her demons and doesn’t want to hear me or my opinion, she dumped me. She has tried to resume the relationship many times and I will never resume contact with her while she is with this person and drinking. I feel it in my bones that one of them is going to end up dead. It’s so horrifying and heartbreaking to feel so helpless and so angry at the same time of course that anger was years ago and not a part of my current life mostly now I just feel really sad for her because she could’ve had such a different and beautiful life. So again, when karma comes for her I won’t be sad because sometimes karma is actually what it’s going to take for her to make changes in her life. Somehow, I don’t think she’s going to come out of this and be OK. When she threw him out of the house just months after they were first married, he got a lawyer and they had only been married less than a few months and he told her he was entitled to half the house and half of her savings. Can you imagine. She didn’t see that as a red flag. He used her and married her for a place to stay and a checkbook. And then anyone who tried to help her she discarded. Maybe I do sound cold but at some point, I think you just get fed up.

She treated me like dirt for trying to tell her that he was treating her like dirt. Her own therapist told her he was terribly toxic and she needed to get away so what did she do? She dumped her therapist. Her therapist told her that she will not take her back or see her again until she is out of this relationship, but that was over 10 years ago. He had four DWI’s when they met and a criminal record. She was Mensa with multiple degrees. I’m sorry that you got loved bombed because it’s terrible. I bet though that you didn’t discard or blame your friends, when they tried to counsel you. She called me 50 times a day and texted me 50 times a day to tell me all the horrible things that he was doing to her. It was just a living nightmare to then watch her go back and tell him everything I said so that he could call me and scream at me and say I was trying to break them up. It was truly the most toxic and disgusting thing I’ve ever been a part of. I will never get involved in somebody else’s relationship ever again no matter how much they call me or how much they ask for my help nor do I ever want to hang around someone who doesn’t have more respect for themselves. I had to claw my way out of codependency because I took a long look at myself and asked why I would ever let a friend treat me like that, I got myself into therapy and realized that we both came from similar toxic families and she has chosen to remain a heavy drinker and live in that enmeshment world. I hope you are proud of yourself and know how strong you are for being able to break free and get away. It takes incredible strength to be able to do that. Not only did you save your life, but you probably helped the people around you who watched how strong you were and who watched you break free because living in chaos and dysfunction is a horrible way to live. I do believe now there are some people who need chaos because they grew up in it and they just cannot let it go. Some people don’t want to live in peace and calm and not to mention she is an atheist and so there’s an undercurrent of anger that prevents her from living a better life and treating herself better.

This is a good observation. They think and act in stereotypes. Like they just read some book on effective catch phrases to make friends and influence people. They are very shallow and surface oriented.

Pretty sure my neighbor whose home just burned to the ground (arson imo) is a psychopath. It’s horrible what he’s gotten away with and how he has exploited so many people.

How can normal ppl be so okay about such terrible psychos? I feel that we all hv some sort of mental disease or the other nowadays..
