I personally think the PC98 era of Touhou has some of the most beautiful games I’ve ever played, the music (personally) is absolutely amazing as well as the characters that were introduced to Gensoukyou! (Yuuka my beloved). It really is sad that most of the characters never came back in the windows era. Thank you ZUN for making my favorite games of all time.

I'm just glad someone else didn't go for the low-hanging-fruit interpretation of Gengetsu that everyone jumps to in the Fandom. That just warms my heart. Also, it's good to see someone else who loves Nocti's content. She made me appreciate Gengetsu that much more as well as create some sick as hell Touhou Remixes.

I knew about the PC98 era of Touhou for a while, but had yet to look all that deep into it beyond going through TVTropes, and fanart. I did find Shinki's design to look pretty cool, and yeah, the Alice and Shinki dynamic in fanworks can be quite wholesome. Back on topic, neat to listen to the history of PC98 Touhou in one video here. Good job on it.

Interestingly, Genji was one of the few characters whose fate was explained. ZUN stated that he retired behind the shrine. He was also brought up in 19, where Reimu heavily implied Genji passed away of natural causes.

To think that from all the games I play the PC98 games the most to this day. HRTP and MS in particular. I dont even share the same nostalgia to them as a japanese fan would. But I played the games in order beginning from the very first when I became a fan. So they have this kinda "nostalgia" attached to them I suppose. Shinki rules supreme! I really want to find out why Wily Beast tortures your mind so much? Its my favorite (most played) modern era game. I should start a drinkin game whenever you bring up smashbros in the future. "How many times is he mention this game this time!?" instantly comes to my mind when I see a new touhou video of yours popping up. haha

The Rikaki hyper glitch is actually rather fair because she doesn’t keep her invincibility, only the modified shot type. It also makes it so that she can’t shoot anymore so she needs to get in melee range to point blank enemies.

Same. There's a reason I enjoy the music of the B-Side versions of Vampire Survivors' Stages or Mamorukun Curse. It's the same type of Genesis Soundfont you'd hear in a Sonic game or something. It's a really cool sound.

Instrumentation is kinda poor even for fm synthesis standards, especially 1 and 2, but 3 and 4 and 5, have solid/kinda good soundtracks, imo At least for all of the soundtracks, the composition is great

1 and 2 are a bit janky, yeah. The jank in 1 is very much resolved in the album versions however, since the songs are p much remade. @@LavaCreeperPeople Personally I consider the PC98 soundtracks, including the Akyu Untouched scores, to be some of the best in the entire series. Literally not a single song in 5 is forgettable, imo, (just as how basically no song in 7 is forgettable).

The game never mentions the Mugenkan getting destroyed. Also, Yuuka doesn't live in the Garden of the Sun, she just frequents the area. Nobody knows where her home actually is (if we assume that PC98 is canon, this would make sense because the Mugenkan is not actually in Gensokyo).

im going to get murdered for this but touhou 1 through 3 are genuinely some of my favorite touhous and extra fun fact as far as i know touhou is one of the few major game series that has 90s prerenders with non-identified programs used the only other game series i know of to have this occur is the mother series: 3 main models were made in cgi for mother 1 and 2, and a few items got renders in this program as well (the 3 "main" ones are giegue's ship, the skyrunner, and the phase distorter) oh yeah, and just so you know, sonic 3 and mario rpg ARE identified, just not widely known, cause i feel people will bring these up but no yeah that 3d program is just uh. Weird discontinued and technically available on steam through not being removed from a games download

Yumemi is my favorite character, I love how silly is her introduction, and how strong she actually is, and strawberry crises is one of the best ost from Touhou, pc98 is a really fun generation, I like all the games in this generation

Miler's MS 202m hasn't been WR for a year. It's now 203m. The LLS score bit didn't really need to be there if it doesn't talk about what makes the run truly unique (extend cancels and avoiding graze). The two bosses in a row isn't that special and you never see the infamous timeout phases in a scorerun. The score bug in PoDD has been encountered for the second time by Lorenzo during a Lunatic Kotohime scorerun... ironically 5 days after this video being published. Also Chiyuri/Marisa not being able to use Charge Attacks while bombing and hypering is wrong. They can use Charge Attacks while bombing and every character can't use a Charge Attack during a hyper so that's not even a bug to begin with. I think SoEW, while barebones and not as well refined, I still appreciate for what it is since it is ZUN's first real shmup game and I can see there being real love and passion put into it. I mean he made a scoring guide for game on Normal Mode. I believe he estimated you can go up to 19 million on Normal. The reason why HRtP is so empty on the survival side of things is because of how unexplored the game is and there is the reality that (among the other PC-98 games), the Japanese pretty much don't touch it at all for cultural reasons surrounding emulation and piracy. Kind of an L video mainly because of what's in th3-5 - script could've used proofreading.

13:36 The fast-tapping for rapid fire in SoEW actually is an intended mechanic and not just an exploit (it's explained in the game's manual). My guess for as to why ZUN decided to include this is that it's a mechanic also found in Darius Gaiden, one of ZUN's favorite old games, which generally had a lot of influence on him when creating Touhou.

I think it's funny how people think the PC98 Era is noncanon to the Windoes Games despite how it's relatively common for them to sometimes reference the early entries. Even Touhou 6 makes a claim saying it the title chronologically doesn't happen too far after the previous title, meaning that if isn't saying Touhou 5 is canon, it's saying Seihou is canon to Touhou, which means, in a convoluted way, the PC98 entries are still canon. It's funny how ZUN even outright explains stuff about PC98 characters at times in interviews, yet people still believe that the first 5 entries are disconnected from the rest.
