I really love the show and how it reinforced that Penguin is not at all a misunderstood character. He's a vile monster. The only thing I would say didn't work for me is the character of Dr Julian Rush played by Theo Rossi. I didn't feel like the character was ultimately terribly necessary and often felt like he was there for the sake of being there. Also I think this might be a me thing, but I personally was actually hoping that Sofia would actually die in the end. It's because I'm honestly extremely exhausted of the Falcone family constantly being adapted in Batman media as opposed to actual Batman characters. The Falcones were always in the comics just a generic crime family from the olden days of Gotham that were there to show Batman transition from fighting regular gangsters to actual supervillains and yet we keep revisiting them. To me they are just placeholders for the real villains.
@MelchVagquest15 күн бұрын
Sofia is a good character, though. By not dying, she is suffering much worse. Also, she was a cautionary tale about how hard it is to break away from Gotham. As for the doctor's role, without him we have no climax where Oz finds out that his mother always knew what kind of monster he was. I understand wanting to see more colorful villains from Batman's rogues gallery, but Carmine Falcone was in a ton of comics where Batman has been active for years already. Catwoman scratching Falcone's face leaves a scar and that becomes one of his most prominent features
@TheDarkGBJ15 күн бұрын
That's exactly what they are here as well. They are perfect for introducing how corrupt Gotham is. It makes it believable you start seeing his rogues gallery recruit police officers, government officials, civilians etc. into their schemes. The Falcones set the bar for how messed up Gotham is so that once they're out the picture, we can watch the criminal underworld go from organized crime to straight chaos. I love the idea that on some level the Falcones keep the bigger freaks and villains at bay
@The_Phantasm15 күн бұрын
@@MelchVagquest Carmine Falcone isn't an actual character. He is just a Godfather rip-off. The best thing about this show is how they actually commit to making Penguin a villain and as irredeemable as possible. This will make Batman's beating of him feel all the more satisfying. You see, Sony, this is how you do a good villain-focused project! Oz is a textbook delusional pathological liar and narcissist, and the lengths he went to believing his own lies and finally rising as the kingpin of Gotham show how he truly is a monster. No matter how much we think there's something redeeming about him, just like Victor, we hope there's something good we can believe about Ozwald Cobb(lepot)... but nope! No matter how we try to look at it, *the Penguin is rotten to the core* . Colin Farrell, Cristin Milioti, Deirdre O'Connell, and Rhenzy Feliz all deserve Emmys for giving such phenomenal performances. 10/10 This show is up there with Daredevil as arguably the *BEST COMIC BOOK SHOW!!!* 🐧☂🎩🧐🚬

People I know are Batman purists, so they won't watch it simply because all the characters don't follow their strict archetypes. Just because he isn't 'Oswald Cobblepot, son of a wealthy family', just because they kill off some characters that don't die in the comics, because some characters are different than they were... On some level, I can agree with that. But Penguin is a WELL-WRITTEN AND WELL-PERFORMED SHOW. Those are so exceedingly rare in this day and age that I don't care how it might deviate from the source material. It fits with this version of Gotham, and treats both its characters and its audience with respect.

I think it is a good call for Matt Reeves 'The Batman'-Universe not to be a part of James Gunns new DC Universe because I don't see Reeves take on Batman interacting with anything fantastical which the batman in the other universe could do. Also, I think it gives Matt Reeves more freedom to cook more awesome storys like this, without having to worry about it being connected to the other DC Universe projects. Also this way we might get more batman conetent in the future from both universes. I also think it is quite the good call for batinson not to show up in the penguin, I think one week after riddlers explosions and the flood he might have something better to do, while I do agree with you that it would have been very cool to see the batman from the POV of some criminal (again), even so, we already saw that at the beginning of the Batman, so it might have felt a bit repetitve if we saw that again

@ I don’t think so. One is a Batman franchise, one is a DC franchise that has Batman in it. I don’t think the Matt Reeves Batman fits with the James Gunn DC vision. @trevonpernell0814 Did Iron Man 1 Tony Stark look like he was suited to go toe to toe with extraterrestrial gods? No, because it's a story about him fighting terrorists and a businessman. If the only thing you ever read was Year One, could you see Batman fighting aliens. No, because you didn't have to establish anything of the sort to tell that story. What I'm saying is that conjecture like that is irrelevant. When it's time to tell a larger story, any halfway decent writers will be able to take them through the evolutions necessary to address power scaling concerns. What we need if we want the universe to even get far enough to have that problem, is for the people in charge to stop looking gift horses in the mouth and capitalize on a well-made, well-received movie as their foundation when it comes out, instead of shackling the fate of the franchise to whether or not a theoretical future take on the character happens to be any good.

@huntermckinney1199 Was Iron Man made with the intention of starting a cinematic universe? YES. Was that the case for The Batman? NO. Man of Steel? NO. Batman Begins? NO. Never forge a universe out of a movie that was never intended to start such a universe.
@huntermckinney119915 күн бұрын
@trevonpernell0814 Yes, Iron Man was made with the hope of starting a cinematic universe, but so was Green Lantern, so was Dracula Untold, so was The Mummy (2017). It didn't work as a launching pad because of grand plans and a Shield subplot. It worked because it was a great movie that laid a strong foundation for a particular character and setting, which left room for expansion. It's not like anything in The Batman requires it to be some one-off art film. It has a spin-off show and an upcoming sequel. It's already a multimedia universe. All they have to do is say that more characters exist in it. DC has had enough false starts as it is, it doesn't need to make things more convoluted by having two concurrent, but unconnected franchises featuring many of the same characters, when they could easily just fold that already successful stuff in.

I wasn't feeling the story between Oz and Vic, as in it seemed a little sappy. Oz is a villain. He isn't supposed to be cuddly with people. It took 8 episodes to get me to the point where Oz and Vic had to exist as this until that point. This had to happen this way so the Penguin could be a real villain vs Batman. I feel that Oz was good with Vic up till he felt Oz was his family. Oz's look when he says "Fuck, Vic . . .." I knew that was the exact moment when Oz decided he had to kill Vic. I mean he was going to anyway at some point, or that Vic would die by someone else - he's a villain not an anti-hero. Vic was a dead man from the start. And it is about time we got to see the Penguin as he needs to be. The modern audience lost with this show (lol thank god), and you know what? We're back baby!

I totally don't agree about two Batman franchises. The character thrives on variation. If you put this Batman in a world with Superman in it, something essential is lost. This Batman is built on the unique absurdity of this guy putting on this outfit and doing what he does, and doing it well enough that he's earned the trust of a police lieutenant. The fact that he's almost believable is the magic. Introduce him to Superman and Guy Gardner, and you lose that magic. So I think the best thing they could do is create a new Batman for Gunn's DCU that's as far away from this one as possible, and as much a reinvention as this one was. And given that Gunn's Batman movie will be set around not just one Robin, but at least two, I think this is a mission statement that it's going to be a new era, abandoning the gritty realism of Nolan and Reeves for more of a fun Suicide Squad vibe, a true superhero universe akin to the DCAU Justice League show. Let's face it, Pattinson's Batman isn't meant to fight Starro, or goofy Jack Kirby creations like Darkseid. He's not meant to share a universe with Superman. That's a very different kind of Batman. And hopefully, he'll be unlike any live-action version we've ever seen before. Maybe he'll be a bit more fun than mopey Robert Battinson. There's room for both. And doing both gives each a chance to be all the way their own thing, instead of trying to stretching one over two very different kinds of stories.

Fran wasn’t tragic for me, her ending up in a vegetable state felt like a punishment from Os. To me she became just as big of a monster as Os the second she decided to kill her son, and then after that the only other option for him was to be used for her own gain.

Fun fact: batman can't appear in DC tv shows (at least live action) because they don't have the rights. Batman sadly couldn't be in the show

I enjoyed every minute of every ep until the last 10min. I only wish bad things to happen to this guy in The Batman 2

Personally, I like that this franchise is disconnected from the DCU. I, like many others, am tired of this approach towards a realistic Batman. Additionally, I like the idea of having multiple different interpretations of the same mythos, which is one of the driving reasons why I have a love/hate relationship with marvel, or more accurately the MCU, as that’s most of modern marvel. Oh, and speaking of the MCU, erm, Agatha All Along, She-Hulk, and Wandavision disprove your claim. Though all 3 projects are certainly not equal, looking at you She-Hulk, they all prove Marvel knows how to do all of the things you said they don’t. Including writing actual TV, or deciding when to show and when to tell.

I like the fact that they didn't reference The Batman. DC would go out of the way to reference characters in movies and television in an effort to tie them all together. It was lame. 🤡
