Thank you for doing this video. (Even though that issue was on a Colt I bought) I bought an 1861 Navy by Navy Arms (Uberti) manufactured in 1975 at an auction recently, it was an estate sale gun & when I got it, it didn't work. The cylinder was stuck, you couldn't even cock it. Ironically that was exactly what was wrong with it, the grease was hard. Hell even the loading lever was stuck. After I took it apart & cleaned everything it all works great now. I will make sure not to use petroleum based grease! I'm also going to cut my Remington cylinder pin. Thanks for the great tips! I actually found your channel by recommendation from "Lame Beaver" & I'm glad I did.

I made this modification to my stainless 1858 Remmie. I never really believed it would do much of anything but to my surprise it made a big difference. I heavily greased the notched pin with Bore Butter and it kept the cylinder turning smoothly through the 25-30 rounds I shot. It used to start stiffening up after 2 cylinders.

When I was stationed in Heidelberg Germany in 1988 Master Gunsmith Thomas Schmetzer recommended to me boring rings around the Remington cylinder pin which I had him do and lighten up the hammer spring tension all for 100 DM. I noticed an immediate improvement. I have also herd that by having a stainless steel collar bored into the surrounding cylinder pin hole should stop fouling from entering the cylinder pin. Something to further look into. I also found that a mix of 16 oz Bar of Pure Bees Wax and 14 oz of Coconut oil makes for the absolute best Black Powder lubricant to arrest BP fouling. Good educational video. Please keep up the good work.

I cleaned and lubed my new Uberti 1858 and the cylinder started to drag around the 9th shot. Rather than force things, I put it away. After arriving home I attempted to remove the cylinder. The pin REFUSED to move forward. I ended up using a brass hammer and drift on the T shaped head and it broke off the pin. I wasn't aware that Uberti silver soldered that 'shovel-head' shaped piece to the pin. I cleaned everything up and soldered the end back on the pin. That was 3+ years ago and I've not fired the thing since. Your 3 year old video perfectly explains why this happened as I was using wheel bearing grease. DUH! Thanks Blackie, all 6 of my 1858s will get this and your deburring mod very soon. ~Montana Jim

@@BLACKIETHOMAS A followup question if you have the time Blackie. I got some Crisco and 2 Lbs of pure beeswax blocks. From what I saw in your video, it looked like the stuff you were wiping on the cylinder pins had the consistency of wheel bearing grease. I'm thinking about making up 3-4 jars to grease for various temperatures. Would I be better off just using a thin vegetable oil on the pins?

Hey my friend, (sorry this is so long) I have been using bee's wax and lambs tallow. I came across the information in a number of reference papers and articles that in the day it was the prefered lube bar none. For patch lube, lube for the mechanics of weapons, preferences for both by the US Army in their manuals. Because lambs tallow doesn't go rancid at room temp. I found it available through Dixie gun works. I use a steel bowl on top of our crock pot as a double boiler, as mix the tallow with pure local bee's wax, and Cisco ( when I want it thinner). 1 cup - 1/3 to 1/2 cup - (thinner 1/3+). I had seen a previous video on the grooves and it works great. I used a thread file for 8-32 thread to not go very deep. It is a bit of a specialty tool that I use in my profession. All the above is inspired by your videos, and because of your instruction I have a pair of 58's that the actions are smothered as glass. Thank you.

Cool....Great advice as always Blackie.... The only 'modern' lube I have found that works on Remington base pins is "Pro Gold" which is actually designed for stainless steel auto pistols. It's great at preventing galling on s/steel and seems very persistent in that it stays on the base pine where other lubes tend to disappear. My Reminstons are Stainless, which is why I tried it in the first place, having used it on auto pistol before. It's very soft in consistency, but 'stringy' like chain saw bar lube.... there's a word for that.... thixotropic I think.

I found that lambs tallow , beeswax and I throw some pure almond oil into the mix for a winter mixture or food grade mineral oil works great for bores and internal parts as well. The almond oil makes it a little softer when it's cold outside and I adjust my tallow wax mixture a little. It's also great for dry cracked hands from cold weather as a bonus lol.

@@BLACKIETHOMAS so after some trial and error i been makeing paper cartridges in my 1858 today i had a sorta miss fire or maybe the cap pushed the ball out just enough to jam the action and simotainously had a damn cap jam.picked cap out and tryes like hell to get cylinder out till i figured out that the ball was holding up the action not the cap jam.so i took my cleaning rod and beat the ball back into the cylinder. Recaped it and it squib loaded the ball on out at maybe 100fps. Thanks Blackie, your vids are short on bs and long on info. Just finished this mod, it was a problem with my 58 Pietta Navy. I used a few applications of cold blue afterwards. On another note, I did a trigger job on her, got rid of long creep and lowered pull significantly. Really helped accuracy for me. But have one cylinder that fires 100fps slower than the others, I assume it's an alignment problem. Only ran thru two cylinders during test so will try to reproduce those findings making sure powder wasn't compromised by lube.
@BLACKIETHOMAS6 жыл бұрын
a slight diffrence in powder..loading compression..or the inside of the chamber may be a bit bigger ..that and many factors could cause a flux in fps..as you said repeat test..and if it hold up mark that chamber for the empty when carrying hammer down on a empty..thanks for the comment..safe journeys

I’ve been shooting my 1858 Remington over 20 years now. Always put unsalted crisco on top of the ball after loading, to prevent the blast from accidentally sparking the next chamber. Would this take the place of lubing the barrel before firing? I always clean the barrel first anyway after the pistol has been in storage for a while. But I haven’t been lubing the barrel.

Blackie, Such great info...thank you! I want to ask how you feel concerning lithium grease (soap) as a lubricant? I remember in an NRA publication from the 1950's where a discussion was held about cast bullet lubricants by Col Townsend. He found lithium grease to be the best except it was so soft that he didn't deem it practical. For me, I found water pump grease (lithium,) with a plasticiser, works well with round balls except I don't cover the chambers of my BP revolvers, I simply roll them in a pie pan with a very thin film of the grease on the bottom of the pan. So far it's worked well...any thoughts on this? Again, thank you so very much for all the time and effort you have taken to share your vast knowledge and experience with all of us!
