Blackie, I have carried my 1858 Remington for 26 years with 6 chambers loaded. I did the exact modification on my repro after handling an original back in 1995. I thought I was clever coming up with this idea, and you came up with it too!😁 My wife ( R.I.P.),often teased me claiming she was sure I was a Civil War soldier in a previous life. I reenactor for 20 years so I understand her sentiments. The old guys knew what they were doing. I have always carried my Remington in a period correct replica of the Army regulation leather flap holster. In my opinion, these are the best for these old style guns.

I filed a bevel on the bottom of the hammer on mine, so it would clear the back of the cylinder. Filing the cylinder means you have to either file all six notches, or pay attention and use the same notch every time. Also, if you get extra cylinders, you have to do this every time. Modify the hammer, and it works with any cylinder that will fit your gun.
@bobsullivan57148 жыл бұрын
I was about to make the same comment. I filed the nose of the hammer on my stainless Pieta Remmie... I carry with all 6 loaded and the hammer secured in a safety notch............I just don't see the problem with that.......The danged thing is a 6 shooter after all! I am also a believer in carrying a 1911 in condition 1. If you have to rack the slide, it ain't loaded!

I have a update for this! My Pietta made this year, 2018 had the bottom of the hammer being the problem not the back of the cylinder! I went filling as shown, and sure enough it made no difference! I then looked closer and noticed the hammer planted firmly on the TOP of the cylinder. I filled a bit off the bottom of the hammer and all is cured.
@BLACKIETHOMAS6 жыл бұрын
glad you got it..when i did mine i had to look close to see what was hitting as well
@1337penguinman5 жыл бұрын
If you're not sure you could put that blue dye gunsmiths use for bedding stocks on the hammer face and see where it's hitting. I imagine something like a dry erase marker would work as well if you don't feel like buying it. Auto mechanic here, not a gunsmith, but the same principles should apply.

The ruger old army .44 had those notches and the hammer sat solidly in them. I carried six in it all the time. All of my other cap and ball or cartridge revolvers I carried 5. I also used a hammer thong on all my revolvers. That was back in the early to mid 70s.

I gotta hand it to you Blackie, you analyze and come up with solutions very well. This mod, the suggestion of the "Brass" frame "stretch" solution ring and your solution to "sucking caps" on Colts are spot on good suggestions. Pietta and/or Uberti should sign you up to make an "Official Blackie Thomas Signature Conversion 'x' Revolver" Model. ("X" being whatever one they want to modify.) Know what I mean, $$$? ;)

I was thinking of doing the same myself, so it's nice to get a second opinion. My new Uberti has an even shallower notch. It hardly takes anything to advance the cylinder onto a nipple. Obviously, this completely voids the entire purpose for the notch to exist. I am more than willing to use the empty chamber method if I can't get the notches to be at least as safe, but it would be nice to load six at least at the range.

In a good holster that protects the gun, why isn't the Colt design also sufficient? I can see those pins breaking if you're throwing the gun around, but under normal carry conditions it seems to be locked in tight.
@BLACKIETHOMAS6 жыл бұрын
usually you are correct..its when you look at many of the originals and the pins are gone..they are thin and easy to be bent from rough handleing ..plus the shock of firing can loosen them..i have used the pins on mine to good effect..BUT..you must notice the condition of the pins..every time you use them..if the pin lets go..it will be easy for the hammer to slip past and if a heavy mainspring is used snap down on the next cap..i was not there but a close friend was drawing a 1851 navy to shoot a snake ..as he pulled the gun with his finger off the trigger it went off..on closer looking he found the pin was missing and he had let hammer down on the gap..all he could figure was the act of drawing may have caused the cyl to rotate just enough....i hope this helps..safe journeys
@BertieW0oster6 жыл бұрын
@@BLACKIETHOMAS thank you, yes that makes sense. I have an 1851 Navy that I load with 6, but when I put the hammer down on the pin I always wiggle the cylinder back and forth to make sure it caught. Also checking the pins is part of my routine cleaning inspection. My NAA mini revolver is similar.
