In this video, ex-pro MMA fighter and jiu jitsu black belt Leigh Remedios unveils his current strength workout, which starkly contrasts his earlier workouts.
This workout is dynamic, unusual, convenient, and highly effective, backed by the latest studies. It can be done as little as once or twice per week, making it ideal for jiu jitsu practitioners with less time to devote to their strength and conditioning.

How are you quantifying what's "needed" and whether it's "working"?

That's a great question. This is where periodisation would come in to play. Depending on your sport and your own development, you want to determine which quality you want to prioritise with your S&C program. Are you gassing out? Then you need to address your conditioning. Are you getting overpowered? Then you need to get stronger. As stated, strength is a factor of two components; muscle cross sectional area and neural input. Neural component is built by playing your sport a lot and muscle is built through compound exercises and eating correctly. You know it's working when you're getting overpowered less. That's a bit tongue in cheek but t's true. Other indicators would be an increase in lean body mass and/or the exercises becoming easier and requiring additional weight/progressions.

@@LeighRemedios But doesn't all this only come into play _after_ you developed strength by traditonal strength training?Take Jon Jones, for example. he would never be as strong as he is now by doing a few push ups and unweigthted pull ups. I understand maintaining strength you already have by exercising mininally, but to attain it, I just don't see it.

@@ScorpionSuerte This will build strength. Without wanting to sound rude, whether you see it or not isn't relevant to whether it's true. You don't know that Jones wouldn't have built strength if he did this. The science is sound.

@@LeighRemedios But we go on what we do know, not what we don't know. We know traditional strength training makes you stronger at sports. Just look at Brian Shaw doing jiu jitsu. Are you saying he'd have even more grappling strength from doing your routine all his life instead of strong man training?

@@ScorpionSuerte "But we go on what we do know, not what we don't know." No, we try to understand something we don't know so that we can make an informed decision. You're using an outlier who's training routine, diet and supplement regime you can't possibly know. But to answer your question directly, if Mr Shaw spent the last ten years doing my workout plus jiujitsu, whilst keeping his diet and supplements the same, yes he'd be FAR more powerful at jiujitsu than he is now. Look, if you don't like the look of my routine, don't do it. I'm not bothered in the slightest. I've given you what I think is a more than fair response to your questions.
