I honestly did not expect to like it this much. Yes, it's expensive. Yes, there's a lot of rules. But what Singapore has in beauty, safety, innovation and ease, makes it absolutely worth it. If you are thinking of coming to this island utopia, I would highly recommend spending more than the average 2-3 days. There is a lot to see in this city and not all of it is ridiculously priced. Join me as I tour around and visit some of the well known (and not so well known) areas of the city so you can be much more prepared before your visit. Hope you enjoy the video! xx

My husband and I are Canadians and have had the absolute pleasure and privilege of living in Singapore for the past 15 years. It is a beautiful city with a mix of modern and traditional, offering an exceptional quality of life. Yes, it can be expensive, but a lot depends on one's lifestyle choices. I love that Singapore is a clean, safe, and vibrant city and that everything is efficient and convenient. The city/state runs like a well-oiled machine! The thing that I appreciate the most about Singapore is its strict rule of law. Yes, I am in favour of all the rules! These rules are why Singapore is one of the safest cities in the world and continues to attract foreign talent, investment and capital. The strict rule of law has created a cohesive society where there is a lot of trust, be it in the government /politicians, institutions and people. Trust is the foundation of any successful nation, and in this day and age, it is sadly lacking in other countries. While things are declining in many parts of the world, I see Singapore continuing to thrive and enjoy economic, political and social stability. Majulah Singapura (Onward Singapore)!

Wow, you are speaking like a true Singaporean! ❤ haha… you see, Singaporeans are not very expressive generally, tend to be on the reserved side of things in most occasions, but you said exactly what we would feel. Safety. Trust. The software that clicked with the hardware of beautiful infrastructures. So much so that I know that folks around wouldn’t harm me one way or another, no guns, minimal crimes (usually very petty ones), no drugs… Am a frequent traveller myself, but I find it most comfortable here. May that be the conveniences of daily life, the efficiency of public transport grid, availability of nice food everywhere (literally everywhere!). Most importantly, communication. Everyone here can speak English (plus another language). I find it less appealing to go to another country and I can’t convey my message across effectively, or can’t read the signages. For example, I like Tokyo or Seoul, but I’m having tonnes of issues trying to get around or find something or just to express a request. So I’ll say Singapore is definitely much more liveable and cosmopolitan, at least among Asian countries…

I just got back to Canada from Singapore and my wife and I are already thinking of moving our family there in the future. There were no homeless drug addicts, tent cities anywhere in Singapore, our kids would have a much brighter future there with such high quality of life.

It's so funny that for other counties like America, EU & Japan people don't need to be reminded how "wonderful" it is. Because there is no need. As for Singapore I keep seeing por lam par videos that totally ignore the bad side of Singapore. I live here all my life, I've studied abroad. If not for racism I wouldn't have returned to Singapore. However when I started work, Singapore imported racism into our work place. Especially in MNC locals are being discriminated. Many sporeans don't work with foreigners they are happy in their own bubble

@@franciscody9622let’s face it. Foreigner with big paychecks probably has what it takes to warrant a big paycheck. Jobs which probably that require experience and exposure, or connection to the country they came from. Those cheaper salaried ones, Singaporeans wouldn’t even want. How many times have someone applied to be a janitor, general cleaner, construction worker. And stay in dormitories? As for white collar ones, whatever salary that are drawing, they have to pay for their rental, which could effectively wipe out half their salaries. Salaries as you’ve mentioned, lower than yours to begin. Foreign business owners, have to contend with local employment requirements, which is to hire certain quota of locals before they are eligible to hire foreign workers. They create jobs for locals. Finally, if you feel that your salary isn’t that good, 2 things. 1. Empower yourself with new knowledge to earn and deserve a higher salary scale. 2. Start your own company, the sky is the limit. If you have never been someone whom understand how to manage a company’s P&L, costs and expenses, it’s easy to blame everyone else. Bosses, foreigners… some even government. 😂

@@EVL-xj5vc 377a wasn't repealed until recently. It isn't strictly enforced, but it /is/ a discriminatory law. The situation here is some of the best for LGBT individuals in the region, but that doesn't mean difficulties don't exist. Marriage laws are a lot more important than you think, getting approved for gender change can be a complete nightmare... not to mention adoption... and the general backlash the community gets from religious folk. I do love my country, but it would be a disservice to the community to lie about them not being discriminated against.

Being from Vancouver, I find the prices in Singapore to be comparable. A large latte/bubble tea here costs something like $7-$9 (CAD). But Singapore's redeeming quality when compared to Vancouver is that there are much cheaper options, especially for food, that we just don't have in Van. Also the weather and services industry in Singapore are way better than in Vancouver!

naw. weather is miserable in singapore. the insane humidity which makes the heat that much worse, the annual haze coming in from indonesia. you can't be outside for 10mins without sweating profusely. you can't do any sports outside during the day without being in serious danger of heatstroke or sunburn, and you don't have mountains anywhere that doesn't require a long-ish flight. you're just constantly on the lookout for the next climatized indoor venue to escape to. i can't stand it. and that's leaving out the prices, materialistic culture and rampant use of slave labour. already knew it wasn't for me when they announced on the plane coming in that drug trafficking carries the death penalty (and that is me being clean as a white sheet, i don't even drink). guys had me so spooked i almost flushed my aspirin down the plane toilet. what a welcome. no thanks. apart from that I actually did like it but climate is the biggest turn off of them all.

I really liked Singapore when I was there, and I'll agree with you that the Botanical Gardens are amazing. I would say I'm an ambivalent flora type of guy, and I'd go back there in a second. It's an amazing place and the orchids are not to be missed. I also had my first Calamansi juice which during the hot humid days quenched my thirst like nothing else. It's a citrus beverage that a cross between a lemon and a lime. The Gardens by the Bay were being reconstructed after typhoon damage about six months before I was there and were nowhere near as spectacular as they now are. In my opinion there are two gems that you missed. Even if your not staying at the Marina Bay Sands you can purchase a ticket to go up to the Sky Deck on the 56 or 57 floor and the view is stellar. I caught a sunset from there and it was truly breathtaking. It only cost about $25 or so Sing but was worth it to me. The other is the Night Safari which not quite a zoo or wildlife park but something in between. It's it's own unique thing. The animals aren't enclosures as such but many of the animals that are nocturnal and as such snoozing during the day are out and active. I went twice cause it was raining during part of my first trip. I don't really think Singapore should always be called super expensive. It is more expensive relative to most of it Asian neighbours, but like you said it equivalent to Canada, and although I believe we're being ripped off, I don't not do things because it's so expensive. The other thing Singapore didn't decide to become independent they were kicked out of Malaysia, and Britain refused to take them back as a colony, so they're the only country that became independent against their will. It truly is an amazing place to go and really should not be missed. As usual a great video.

food is a secondary, or tertiary issue if you live there. housing is no. 1. and food does quickly become an issue worth considering, too, because most foreigners will, at some point, want the staple foods they are used to. Like dairy. And then you are paying out of your ass again. If you 100% change your diet to a local one, sure, it is possible to eat affordably.

A Malaysian fresh grad earns RM 2.4-2.8k. A bowl of noodles cost SGD 3.5-5, whereas a bowl of noodles cost RM 7-12. @@vennsim71 my how edgy you are....'pack up and leave!' you go girl! if you are there as an expat and do not have access to rent controlled housing it will quickly screw you over. Rent increases of 30% (and much more ) after 1 year in a place is tough. Is it possible? of course. you pack up your household (again) and move another few kilometers away from the CBD. All I am saying is that if you come from a western country, it MIGHT be worth it. But at the cost of some conveniences, stability and long-term planning that you might be used to. Just remember the classic 5Cs. If you used to drive Mercedes or Porsche in Central Europe on your professional salary chances are you will have a Toyota or no car at all in SG.

I think you get a good vibe due to the cleanliness, integration of greenery with city structures, futuristic designs, amazing food, picturesque cafes, neighborhoods, malls, delicious hawker food, over the top airport and interiors everywhere, the fact that the locals all speak English and are polite and friendly, the Asian diversity, high number of Western expats and Western families that make you feel comfortable and most significantly the safety. A single woman can walk around at 3 AM and nothing will happen to her in Singapore. This mix of traits doesn't really exist outside of Asia (Maybe Australian cities come close, but Australia is part of APAC geographically and culturally in my opinion). So it is refreshing for you.

The “Garden City” vision was introduced by then Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew on 11 May 1967 to transform Singapore 🇸🇬 into a city with abundant lush greenery and a clean environment to make life more pleasant for the people of Singapore 🇸🇬 to live a healthy lifestyle.

I share your sentiments completely. I'm here now for a second time after 5 years and will be spending weeks in the city. It was the only thing I was thinking about for the past 5 years. My top 2 are also Singapore and Tokyo :) The relocation schemes are a bit bothersome, but that's completely understandable. But yeah, you can't choose which city you fall in love :) Cheers Alina

@@lawrencemitchell5983 I did some backchecking, the Singapore River cleanup was only completed in 1987 so if your late 80s was about that time period, yeah you probably caught the final part of the cleanup. Before that, the river really, really stank to high heavens. One thing I do notice about the difference between the cultures is that they approach problem solving very differently. Singapore has no qualms about making a development or problem solving plan that'll span for a few decades, while in the US, if the plan is not completed within 10 years or less, it ain't worth doing. This is kind of a big problem because long term problems become endemic and over time, solving them will start requiring huge amounts of money up front, which the US can't afford. Basically, the US system is a lump sum plan while the Singapore system is an instalment plan. You can guess who has it easier financially.

So proud to be Singaporean, and honestly, after years of living in London, I'd say Singapore is actually more affordable due to having affordable choices, e.g. hawker centres that are cheaper than a Tesco's/Sainsburys meal deal. Also, it is safe and clean, which are all things I took for granted...and now I really miss home.

Experience the life of the locals and where we go to shop or eat. Some good, cheaper local food you can try in the heartlands. There are also malls you can check out. Yup, not sure why people get so frazzled when I say the US could learn a thing or two from Singapore (I mean, that is true, 100%). I stayed at the Marina Bay Sands in December for an entire weekend. I splurged and even got the upgraded room since this was a bucket list place for me. From my balcony, I had an unobstructed, front and center view of that nightly Gardens By the Bay show. The rootop pool is to die for. Yes,, expensive stay, but honestly worth every Sing dollar!!!! (Yes, there is a daily resort fee, but in your room, you get unlimited FREE snacks and drinks!!!!)

For breakfast, you should try roti prata with curry or if you're not looking for a punch in the morning, then sprinkled sugar on top. 😊 Another favourite bread option is kaya (coconut jam) on toast. For the chicken rice, a thick dark soy sauce usually accompanies the chilli sauce. Never mind, you have a few reasons to return for another food safari.😁 Happy to hear you enjoyed your visit. As a Singaporean who's ethnic Chinese, I've to again enlighten foreigners, especially Chinese Mainlanders: Singapore is NOT a Chinese nation. In reality, Singapore has always been a multi-racial, lingual, cultural and religious society. Our forefathers and pioneers who laid the foundation for this country comprised not only Chinese but also Malays, Indians, Pakistanis, Eurasians, Sikhs, Arabs and Jews. That's why you can also find a Hindu temple and a mosque in Chinatown. Not just Confucianism, but also Asian values such as being family-oriented, respect for elders and teachers, diligence, thrift, emphasis on their children's education and care for the community. P.S. Our national anthem is sung in Malay.

I absolutely LOVE Singapore. I've been a few times for business, and it is without a doubt my favorite big-city destination on the planet. The city feels is so clean, safe, and vibrant. Everything is planned so well, and because of it's multicultural history it can feel like you are in many different countries at once. The food is absolutely top-tier, from the stalls to high-end options; if you are a foodie, this is a bucket-list destination for sure. I actually ate at that very Tian Tian Chicken stall 12:40 last year, and I loved it (get the cuttlefish and bean sprouts!). Yes, it is expensive, but I was able to great food for very reasonable prices if I excluded alcohol (which is really pricey). Cafe Sia w/Toast for breakfast and a meal from an average food-stall can all be had for under $12/day total, easily. That is way cheaper than the US, for example, with out high taxes and tips. I got a fabulous room at a 5-star hotel for under $300/night. The same room in US/EU would be double that. Also, you can get a Metrocard and use that to get around, and it's very affordable as opposed to using Grab taxis to go everywhere. Can't wait to get back over there, it's an awesome city!
