I am learning that I want anything that Nancy Fraley produces. I'm so mad that I missed the Still Austin Tanager, which I thought this was going to be about. I did get two bottles of Still Austin's Monster Mash (one is almost gone already) which is probably the closest I'll get to a Joseph Magnus Cigar Blend. Oh, and amazing sweater, Erin!

JMCB is just *chef's kiss* - So much flavor, drinks below its proof, and is very nice with a cigar, too! Hard to have more than one bottle at a time at that price, but I'm with Erin - this could be a bougie daily pour if it didn't cost so damn much! 🤑 I like cigar blends quite a lot, and I like the "regular" Joseph Magnus bourbon, so JMCB was a unicorn bottle for me for years before I finally stumbled upon one at MSRP. And then ANOTHER ONE at MSRP in a different store! And then I went and bought a lottery ticket... and won nothing 😅

The best cigar blend bourbon is the new Still Austin Tanager which was also blended by Nancy. Unlike all other Cigar blend whiskeys it is not finished in secondary barrels.

I knew as soon as you said "doesn't drink to its proof" and with the Nancy Fraley tidbit that this was a blind of JMCB. I have now had a pour of this and I agree 100% with your blind sentiments of it, trying it not blind at a bar. Was always hesitant at the 200$ bottle price tag. Had a pour over Christmas myself actually with a friend in town from Florida. We both loved it. I would buy a bottle. It's very, very good.

They’re simple 2 oz Boston round sample jars that we sticker on the bottom with a number, and we have a corresponding key. There’s so many samples in our pool that there’s no way we could keep up with what’s what, leaving us completely blind. It’s a ton of fun!

@@stuffandwhiskey you're not going to believe this.. I just found a little surprise at the abc store that I want to send you. Don't know how to go about this. Do I give you my email address so we can communicate offline or what?? How do I go about sending it to you?

Maybe I missed this mention but who is the actual pourer for your blind tasting samples?
@stuffandwhiskey16 күн бұрын
We pour them into keyed sample jars, mix them up, and are constantly swapping single samples as well as paired samples (for the Thursday head-to-head matchups). I (Josh) do the pouring and keying as well as the shuffling, Erin does the drawing so she doesn't know what she's pulling. All our single samples for these Monday videos are in a big box and all the Thursday head-to-head samples are in another box. You can see an example key @ forms.gle/QNS7WJFnKvRUqfTf9 for reference.

I own both Joseph Magnus, and Good Times cigar blends. They're both triple finished MGP and the Good Times (at least the bottle i have, and i bought 2 backups) is way more rich and concentrated. The notes of dark stewed fruit and tobacco are ridiculous. The Good Times is also a lot less. I found bottles on sale at Total Wine for $109-80.

I have batch 304. I got it for $99. The liquor store catered to tequila and the owner said he won’t be able to sell it for $199 to his clientele. I bought one and the next day went back and he hadn’t sold any so I bought another. A week later he hadn’t sold any so I bought about her two. I left him two and it’s been two months and I haven’t been back to see if he sold the rest. Love this stuff. The Wheel Horse Cigar Blend is really good as well but not in the same league. Love the sweater as well!

The age of the whiskey Has deviated. Their website states the earlier batches, 98 and below I believe, had a base of 14 year bourbon.
@stuffandwhiskey6 күн бұрын
It’s worth a listen to Nancy Fraley’s interview with Jason at The Mash and Drum. She’s the one that’s been blending JMCB since the beginning and does specifically say that the age hasn’t changed. With that said, she is only quoting a range, and she didn’t get into percentages.

@@stuffandwhiskey I have it playing in the background. I'm about an hour and a half in, hopefully I haven't missed that part of the conversation. In the meantime, check out their site where they mention it being 14+ years old. It's not on the label of course, so maybe the site isn't held to the same accuracy standards. Maybe I can't include links here, my comments aren't posting. The old batches only say 14 year, search for josephmagnus cigar-blend-batches-85-90-and-93-98 Here they specifically note the 9 year, search for this: josephmagnus tasting-notes-cigar-blend-bourbon-batches-183-188

@@stuffandwhiskey after watching that stream, I didn't hear her specifically say the age hasn't changed. She actually makes comments about getting "back" to being older. At 2:01:43 she says batches after 280, or so, are over 8 years old again. That implies some batches were 7 or younger. Close to the end at 2:32:40 she says they're back to 10 years being the minimum, and at the very beginning the youngest component was 9 years old. I don't think that implies they never got older than that. I think the ages in the tasting notes are accurate, and some of the more legendary batches had some pretty old stuff in them. It looks like batches 48-98 had 14 year as the youngest component.

3:11 Erin, you're showing my age. 😂 Franklin Roosevelt died years before I was born, but I grew up around people who'd lived through World War II, and I heard a ton about his fireside chats. 🙂 5:27 That flavor wheel y'all put on the screen looks like Texas. 🤠⭐ 6:20 If I might make a suggestion, Erin, don't drink just higher proof whisky. Without ever planning it I've been drinking whiskey for three years now in a range from 80 proof (Jameson) to 130.9 (Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Barrel Proof, the strongest whisky I've had so far), and one of the benefits is my palate hasn't become insensitive to lower proof whisky. And there is good whisky that's 100 proof or below - for example Laphroaig 10 year Scotch, Abasolo Mexican corn whisky, Balcones Texas Pot Still Bourbon, Woodford Reserve, or Oregon Spirit wheat whisky.

It's a way to reset your nose if you're overwhelmed by a smell. You may see people sniff coffee beans for the same effect.

I've done it, but *for me* it makes no difference. OTOH I use Coke to clear my palate (water just doesn't do it for me), and that no doubt has a different effect than more common palate cleansers. 🙂

Michael nailed it. For some, it’s a good way to reset your senses, not too dissimilar to smelling coffee beans when trying to choose colognes. Smelling coffee beans also work great for whiskey, but my arm is always handy.
