Chryslers post war engineering team was manned by some of the most brilliant minds the automotive industry has ever known.
The little 170 Slant Six was loved by all, while it's big brother, the 225 was seen as a mistake and poor compromise of componentry to make the bean counters happy.

Did the same startup to a 1969 383 and 727 combo I found. We put it on the garage floor and poured gas in the carb and my large Itialian friend sat on the 727 and rode that for a good 30 seconds with open manifolds as the motor roared. It scared the neighbors and made all the neighborhood dogs bark. Good times.

I really enjoy reading the comments posted by the haters and know it alls on the Miata. They obviously don't see all the engineering that's going on. They also probably buy everything that goes on their cars and, quite possibly, pay someone else to build for them. Sure, I've seen a few things that I would've done differently than Tony on this project but, it's not my project. I'll just enjoy the videos and most likely pick up a few ideas in the process.

@@frenchonion4595 I don't think he believes it will be superior he's just looking at the miata as a good platform for him to test the 170 slant. He has mentioned he's tried to move the motor down and back as much as possible which is exactly what you want in a road race or grand touring car. Tony is a smart guy he is doing everything he can to make the miata a viable road race car. The slant six is flat out known for its reliability period. I dont know how old you are but the reliability of the slant six may pre-date your knowledge.

That’s crazy with the Miata purists! They are high production “paper cups” use it, toss it, grab another. They are great little fun cars! I don’t remember people bitching when Ford owned over 50% of Toyo Kogo Heavy Industries and the popular thing was slipping a 302 Into a Miata and making a sports beast, or the Pontiac crew crying about V8 Archie and his SBC Fieros (he is still cranking them out) but when you use a Slant, the world is coming to an end..... either they have a hardon for US Chrysler products, got a problem with mix and match manufacturers, or they are not fabricators, they are bolt together or hire it done guys....... or all the above!

Even Mercedes is going back to the inline six. From about 1996 to 2018 or thereabouts they played around with V6s. Recently they have introduced a new 3.0 liter inline six with both exhaust and electric turbochargers, a starter/alternator/21hp-169lbft electric motor between the flex plate and the torque converter. There are no belts on the front of the engine whatsoever. Go check it out the Mercedes Benz M256 engine.

Plenty of research was done when I bought a rotary powered RX-7. It was a whole new world. Mazda loved making the rotary work. @@livewire2759 I agree, the RX7 belongs with a rotary. I've seen the V8 swaps before and some other Japanese 6 cylinders and 4 cylinders. Much like Tony's Miata, the balance comes from having the rotary engine seated behind the front axle. It's considered a front midship engine placement.

Having 160hp at 1800 is pretty stout if you think about it. We don't rev generators much over 1800 rpm, unless it's a small air cooled and they run 3600. Even then most equipment won't be running over 2100 or so. They don't give any other ratings I've seen for the 460 other then 1800. Awesome... I had the same happy moment recently. The 170 in the Dart has been sitting for at least 15yrs. Initially I was dissappointed that it wasnt a 225 when i got the car, but youve made me rethink that!! Some fresh points, cap, rotor, wires n plugs, and a lil carb fiddling brought it back to life. I fact it fired so quick, I didnt expect it and it scared me haha!! Seems some rings were stuck and it smoked like a freight train, but by the time it got up to temp, it was running great!! Has a ratty exhaust system so was a lil loud, but its interesting how the 170 exhaust note sounds impossibly hot-rodish, almost like it has a hot cam, even though, of course, it doesnt!!! I envision a 5.7 carbed Hemi for the Dart, but itll be a driver project with the six for a while. Hoping to drive it around the yard once the new fuel tank goes in soon. A high school mate in the 70's ran a Valiant with the Leaning tower of Power. When he bragged about how reliable it was we would tease him with "That's because it cant make enough power to hurt itself." I have never seen a slant in anything as light as a Miata but I'm betting that its going to be an impressive combination for what UT has planned for it.

I've definitely found a new respect for the slant six 170. Sure I love powerful engines but I'm intrigued by reliable and indestructible ones almost more so. I grew up on American metal but fell in love with a Volvo that I inherited out of luck. It's no Chevy 350 but it will run one to it's grave. I've learned it's not uncommon for Volvo red block to throw down a million miles without being taken apart. Just properly cared for. I'd like to know if that 170 is a million mile motor. The perfect engine should. Thanks for doing something uncommon and being passionate about it. I can't wait to see the Miata go!

I love these old school I6s! They usually sound kinda ratty without an exhaust, but that sounded great. Now I know you've got some beef with the engine masters guys, but they did a really interesting test with manifold temperatures and such, what they found was that what often is thought of as high inlet air temps from hot manifolds is actually the fuel in the carburetor being heated! Like in the float bowl. So it robs the fuel of it's charge cooling effect. All that is to say, the heat riser delete is a good mod, and tests have shown that. Granted you probably could achieve similar results using a phenolic spacer, but welding can be free, spacers cost money lol.

I want to see a high rpm N/A 170. I think that would be the most fun in a miata. Choppy idle and comes into the power band around 3500-4000 rpm. Sit down and rework the cylinder head too port the intake and exhaust and fit some bigger valves into it.

You see? There is method to his madness. As a Corvette guy (Corvettes originally used straight 6 engines) I can totally relate to his slant 6 obsession, especially now knowing it was designed to be a road course racing engine for competing with european cars... JUST LIKE THE CORVETTE! I still would have put the slant 6 in an american car, but I don't think Chrysler ever made a little two door, two seater back then... did they?

So simply! Start it right on the floor! Now a days, stuff is so complex! We had lots of dodge & Plymouth 6 cyls in the 1970's. Old family freind had a 74 dart 4dr with 6cyl that burnt a exhaust valve. I went down to either the dodge dealer, or a auto parts store & bought the one valve & gaskets and lapped in the valve and had it running like new for her! (Pretty good for a 16 year old kid at the time) So easy to work on!

The idea of a 'perfect engine' being the 170, reminds me that in Australia General Motors Holden started in 1948 with the inline 6 135 'Gray motor' based on a pre war Buick design. In 1964 they came out with the inline 6 Red Motor which was a completely new design. Holdens were the car to own in Australia - well ahead of Ford and Chrysler. And if GMH produced a 'perfect' 6 it would have been during the Red Motor era, which parallels the Slant 6 era in a country where in line 6s were much more important than in the US. In terms of CID it evolved as follows (Wikipedia) 130 cubic inches (2,130 cc) 138 cubic inches (2,262 cc) 149 cubic inches (2,447 cc) 161 cubic inches (2,639 cc) 173 cubic inches (2,835 cc) 179 cubic inches (2,940 cc) 186 cubic inches (3,049 cc) 202 cubic inches (3,298 cc). I'm an American who moved to Australia in 1976 and I have no experience based opinion of which was the best - the closest to perfect. I defer to my Australian friends who know these engines inside out. I owned a 173 for some time and would not put it forward particularly even though it is closest to the Slant 6 in CID. I can say that among Australians in the 70s and 80s I most often heard the 186 put forward as the best of the lot, with the 202 as being 'too heavy on juice' - ie not economical on fuel. In Australian Fords by far the most developed engine would be the more recent cross flow 250 CID which, with an alloy head, ruled the Australian Taxi market until very recently. Perfected, perhaps more than perfect. The earlier pre cross flow 250 Ford cid engines were solid performers and had early 170 and 200 variants. I've owned several of them and found them completely trustworthy in the bush - even when badly worn you could keep them chugging with spare ignition parts and good supply of oil. The slant 6 also has a history in Australia, and received a fair amount of 'go fast' attention because of the importance of in line 6 motors here. So there would be plenty of opinion and solid knowledge about all the in line sixes here in Australia way beyond my experience. Come on Aussies - edjumicate Tony.

Tony, I hope that you are aware of the history of Chrysler in Australia? We started off building cars that were basically copies of American A-body cars. Then in 1971, we designed our very own straight-six engine with hemispherical combustion chambers. It came in three sizes: 215, 245, and 265. The next model, released in 1972 was a totally Australian-designed body. We made a 2-door version - our Charger. You could buy it with a 318, but the R/T version had the 265 engine with triple webbers, revised cam, and factory headers. This gave it 300bhp and 0-60mph time of 6 seconds! I would love to be able to send you one of our "Hemi" straight sixes. You can get some serious power out of them and they are built Chrysler tough.

We never got the 170 ci in Australia, only 225. 225 was pretty good compared to the other 6 cylinder engines by GM and Ford, but they did seize and throw rods out the side of the block when run low on oil. In 1970 the slant was dropped for the Hemi 6....the use of hemi was more of a marketing ploy than anything. This motor was originally going to be used in trucks and was partially developed by Chrysler USA and finished by a team of engineers in Australia. Original design was 245 ci and in 1971 they released a 265ci and then a 215ci sharing crank, rods, cam. The 215 was a low comp dog for government fleet cars. The 265 was the pick and quite strong, it has 318 pistons and lifters. The R/T 6 pack came with triple twin side draft webbers, high comp, cam etc and produced around 300 HP in top spec and the E49 option R/T charger (Aussie Charger) ran 14.2 quarter mile. The 265 was a better option than the 318 for economy and performance.
