Excellent watch, I have to say. They got it right at the first attempt or version. No overcooked faux patina and stuff. The first thing I look at on this kind of watch is how the end links fit into the lugs and on this one it really looks impressive. Very nicely done. Have to tried the hot water trick to fix the bezel alignment? Excellent review mate!

I've had this watch for a few days now and if we forget that its a homage, what you get is a watch with the new Seiko GMT movement, sapphire glass, a screw down crown, and a bi-directional GMT bezel (which is alined correctly), all for a very competitive price. I think it's great!
@RollingShutter8 ай бұрын
I bought this version as a "try out" version, to see if I would really like to spend my money on the Tudor GMT, after wearing the sn109 for half a year and not getting tired of it, I went to my Tudor AD to try one on and order it. I truly could not get over the huge polished slapsided side wall of the Tudor. It made it feel incredibly top heavy even on my 19cm wrist. So unfortunately I had to pass on the original and kept the hommage.
@thegorn Жыл бұрын
I love this piece. Such a better shape than the original. I bought the Black Bay Heritage 41 with in house movement. It was almost 15mm thick (14.75 they say online), and with those thick slab sides it wore like an absolute dog. So sold it. A couple of years later I saw one of the ETA Black Bay Heritage 41 come into a pre-owned seller and it was a safe queen and I tried it on and it was waaaay better than any in-house Tudor, so I bought it. My home calipers measure it at 12.70mm thick so 2mm thinner which makes a hell of a difference. So I was never going to get the Tudor GMT which is even thicker at 15mm. I plan on getting this and if anyone says "aww it's not the Tudor" I'll tell them to get effed and Tudor can get effed too until they make watches at non-stupid thicknesses again.
@LumePip Жыл бұрын
That's a really interesting insight. I think the problem Tudor's having with in-house movements is the thickness. Like the BB Pro, for example - all anyone talks about is how the thickness either DOES or DOESN'T make it wearable/unwearable. That might be why the BB58 and Pelagos 39 have done so well. They're in-house, but also just time-only three-handers so no extra GMT stuff, plus they're 200m water restistant as opposed to 300m. That also might play into being more appealing to the masses of enthusiasts who love the designs but can't stomach the potential dimensions. But you're right, San Martin nailed it here
@thegorn Жыл бұрын
@@LumePip BB58 has brilliant proportions. I don’t like the fake rivets but they aren’t terrible. I’d like to see something in that size from Tudor with a rich gloss black dial and gloss ceramic bezel but Rolex won’t let them as it would take away from the submariner. The fake rivets are basically there not so much for the vintage aesthetic, but as a forced design separation from “modern Rolex”. They want to keep Tudor “vintage” and Rolex “modern”. In older times it was all about differences in movement quality, fit and finish. Now it’s just arbitrary marketing/pricing difference. So we will never see a Tudor submariner ever again.

First off "This is 40" is hilarious. That aside...Great video...SM gradually has become more pricey which makes it more difficult for the buyer to justify. I buy off of WatchDives as well, they usually have the best price without Alie shipping that takes way to long. Im not sure I agree with your score on branding. SM's use to have a such inconsistency with their branding. A shark on the crown, a scripted San Martin on the dial, then the hex on the clasp. All on the same watch...at least now they stay pretty consistent. I love SM's, they do make a great watch...it just gets hard when they push their price near $400...If they can make pieces like this for under $330 or so they do have a lot of bang for the buck. Side note, your channel is becoming one of my absolute favorites. The drop in edits, like writing home about the caseback, is freaking hilarious. Those little add ons in your videos really make them entertaining, IMO. You give great information and insights, as well as some really great camera shots. All of that, coupled with the sarcastic add ons, really is great, keep it up!

Haha, maybe I was a little harsh on This Is 40 - I think compared to some of those other gems (Knocked Up, Superbad, The 40-Year-Old Virgin) it had a lot to live up to. I think you're right on the branding - they absolutely needed some consistency. That shark used to look insane; like something you won at a fair. The finishing it just exceptional - I'd actually pay a bit more for some of these GMT models if they offered them with a Swiss-made movement like they do some of the conventional three-handers. This watch with a Sellita SW330-2?! Take my money! (Creditcard approval pending...) But with the Seiko movements, I'd agree they need to keep that value factor in tact! And it's always lovely to read comments like these - I'm so glad you enjoy them and that it's as fun to watch as it is to make. Thanks so much for saying so!

I really do appreciate a smooth case back even a smooth and undecorated one. They feel comfortable on wrist, allow for a thinner watch than with an exhibition back, and leave room if you do want to engrave it. Honestly wish more brands would just cap off the back like this because It always feels to me more of a premium choice, as most low to mid range movements are nothing special to look at as well as adding thickness for something you aren't going to see most of the time you wear the watch.

Good review. I have GMT Master 2 and also this model. Accuracey wise the San Martin is running at -1 sec a day out of the box the rolex is -5. Not what I was expecting. The feel and quality of the rolex is there but guess whats on my wrist 99.9% of the time, the San martin Its a good looking watch, clear, accurate, the bracelelet being fully brushed takes a beating and still looks new. The rolex bracelet scratches as you put it on. Pees me off, forever polishing those centre links. If you want accuracy and quality at a good price go and buy a casio MTG from japan +- 0 secs a year and the build quality is class. Had mine 5 years and no scratches, DLC coating.

... and just for the algorithm, here's another comment: I did buy the black dial version shortly after I posted my first comment and the watch is still in my collection. It's on my wrist as I'm typing this, actually. :) I still think that it's a great piece for what the money - the level of finishing and the overall detailing are quite remarkable, considering the price. Perhaps not as good or "complicated" as on my Christopher Ward, but certainly within striking distance of Steinhart. Cons on my example: 1. GMT-hand is misaligned and not in a fixable, "constant" manner. Probably an issue with the NH34 in general or with the NH34 in my example. At least that's what my watch-maker thought. 2. Clasp has minor issues that *could* result in it coming undone inadvertently. Nothing serious, and it hasn't actually come undone once while I was wearing it. But one of the pushers doesn't properly "reset" when you push only it in. Meaning if you push and release the first trigger and then push in the other trigger without touching the first one again, the clasp can open. The "plate" within the clasp that houses the two triggers moves a tiny bit when I manipulate the triggers - looks like a minor QC-issue. 3. Re-starting the movement after setting the time can be tricky. If you don't do it carefully, the minute hand will "jump" and you'll need to set the time again. Could also be an issue with the NH34 and not with the watch or its crown. None of these points are deal-breakers for me - the watch looks and wears great and punches well above its price-tag, IMO. I love the lume and the colors on the bezel-insert. I'm usually not a fan of aluminium Pepsi-bezels, but this one looks awesome, thanks to the darker, more saturated looking red and blue. Also: The lume is very bright, long lasting and very evenly applied.

Great video! Congrats! No doubt SM it's a great homage and the finishing is superb. I own two models, the SN008 - PT5000 and SN015 - Hangzhou 6460. I've bought the BB58 mode firstl, which impressed me a lot! When I decided to go ahead with a pepsi gmt no question my impression and experience with the first model had a big influence. However, if you need to apply the warranty, it's really painful and time consuming process, my SN008 had an issue after couple of months of wearing it, so I contacted SM "customer service", long story short, the customer service is simply awful. Took me almost a year and after "tons" of message exchange to have the watch replaced. I just own these 2 models, and seems that they are facing some quality issues with the Hangzhou 6460, in some forums you often see similar issues with the watch (quality) and complains about the customer service.
@LumePip Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much!! The PT5000 movements haven’t given me any issues at all, but I waited until they started doing Seiko-powered GMT models before going for one. It’s a shame about the customer service - is that through SM directly? I think WatchDives handles the warranty of their sales, but not sure about the brands directly through Ali et al. I’m hoping I don’t need it but am considering asking for my bezel to get sorted but maybe it’s not worth the hassle based on your experience!
@mwu_10 Жыл бұрын
@@LumePip I made a mistake when writing the comment, actually the issue was with the SN015, the Hangzhou movement, not the SN008 - PT5000, which is working like a charm, no issues at all. I think the PT5000 is a great movement and it has proven that, no complains so far. But the Hangzhou 6460 seems that is not the case, also I've noticed that the quality have decreased significantly, perhaps I had a bad luck but reading the foruns looks like that is not only me facing this kind of experience. Regarding the customer service, yes I did through SM directly.

Did you fill out the date of purchase and watch model yourself? My copy of this watch arrived yesterday (finally pulled the trigger after I dropped a comment 5 months ago saying I was going to get it). Had been sleeping on it for a while. I love this so much more than the Tudor - which just looks wrong with its big polished slab sides, riding tall on the wrist, with faux rivets and weird looking crown. San Martin gets it right whereas the Tudor gets it horribly wrong. It just goes to show what listening to the watch buying public can do. San Martin get great feedback and execute accordingly, whereas the Swiss companies have their heads stuck up their own asses. I love the San Martin hex logo on this - matches the snowflake hands really well. I put it on the on-the-fly adjustable bracelet. Could do with some half-links but no too bad. My bezel is bang-on straight. Zero blue tint for the AR. I give design 10/10 as they do it better than Tudor. Movement is probably 8/10. Price is 10/10 during AliExpress sales. Execution I give a 8/10. Only marks down for no-half links, and the underside of the bracelet is a little bit of a potato peeler - maybe I will take a pumice stone to that but will see how I go.
@LumePip Жыл бұрын
Ah, nice one, mate! The sale is always the way to go with these things. And you're right about the bracelet - I don't know why they still have issues with sharpness, as, like you point out, they're usually so good at listening to community feedback and adjusting stuff accordingly. I must say, though, I have the latest Pelagos homage in titanium and there's barely any sharpness to speak of, barring the underside of the lugs, but that's it, and it doesn't lessen the wearability. So is it going to be a keeper for you? I've got to admit, since selling this, I've had my eye on the white dial version. That on a jubilee-style bracelet with the on-the-fly clasp would be sweeeeeeet
@thegorn Жыл бұрын
@@LumePip Definite a keeper for me. I have it on the on-the-fly adjustable clasp but the issue is that I’m between links so if I take a link out, I have to adjust the clasp all the way out, with no room if my wrist swells. Put a link in and I have to adjust the clasp all the way in, and it’s still not quite tight enough to stop it sliding down over the wrist bone like a gangster mob boss. Needs half links as each oyster link is quite long. I have the San Martin jubilee coming tomorrow and will try that. Individual jubilee links are usually shorter than oyster links, and thus don’t require half links, so I’ll probably get a good fit with it. Hopefully it’s not a cheese grater underside.

the sole reason you'd buy this not the Tudor is the price, so if that's what you want to say about yourself, go for it.

Not sure you can use the "lack of design" against this one. After all: People who buy this and other similarly styled SM watches buy them *because* of their "lack of originality". Just ask SM themselves who have stated that their original designs don't really sell all that well. I am very close to pulling the trigger on this model - I was looking at ceramic Pepsi homages, and Steinhart was out since I've already owned a bunch of those (and still have two) and I want a different case-shape. Plus I don't like the 120 click dive-bezel they put on their GMTs. Which led me to the Cronos and SM Pepsi models but, to me, they look too similar to the real deal. I just don't want to come across as a poser ... :) I doubt any non watch-nerd would know about the Tudor GMT, so there's not a huge risk of having to get into conversations about homage-watches and how they're not fakes. Plus I prefer the smaller size and more subdued looks of this one over the modern-day Rolex homages.
@LumePip Жыл бұрын
That's a good point! But neither do I think I can give out points FOR the design, if you get me. Credit is definitely owed somewhere for this badass design, but not owed to SM! 😅 And great point about the whole recognisable homage thing. It's definitely one of those things that I reckon still bugs even the LEAST insecure homage-wearing of us - "Is that a real Rolex?" Like a dagger to the eart every* (both*) time. I'd probably pick up another of these, maybe in the white - especially as Tudor are now even making one. It's a solid piece. Probably the best SM I've handled of late. But more reviews of theirs coming soon.

Joke to content ratio is off the charts. I think it detracts from the video IMHO. I had to bail before the end because I just couldn't take the constant braking.
@LumePip Жыл бұрын
Fair enough, mate. I’ve watched enough channels with videos of somebody literally talking me through a spec sheet without any care or effort. I’m not doing that, and I don’t watch many watch reviews on KZbin for that reason. But the beauty of KZbin is if that’s something you want, chances are, someone’s done it and it’ll be there. And if someone hasn’t, well, there’s no stopping you from doing it yourself 🤷🏼♂️

SAN MARTIN really need address there ALIGNEMENT bezel Issues..ive two san martins one ive had to adjust fully to line up the other is slightly off which im not that fussy to alter but as youve stated theyre getting dearer on all models and fit n finish is excellent so plz S.M sort your BEZEL ALIGNMENT OUT OVER ALL YOUR MODELS...
@LumePip Жыл бұрын
Yeah, definitely starting to hear more and more people say they’ve had QC issues - I think it’s the exception and not the rule but it’s not a good look. To me it looks like complacency after building a lot of goodwill with a few years of solid pieces. They need to remember that that is what separates them from the competition!
@drewsykes8152 Жыл бұрын
The indices just look a little oversized. Otherwise very hard to fault!
@LumePip Жыл бұрын
Maybe they modelled them a little bit on Rolex’s maxi dials and had some parts from their other Submariner-type homages. Superbly finished though! For me, I just wish the logo was a bit bigger, or wider or something, to differentiate it more easily from the markers
@drewsykes8152 Жыл бұрын
@@LumePip Yeh probably. Unfortunately I don’t like the more modern maxi look. Agreed on the logo! I also just find the bottom edge of their cases oddly sharp and can’t help but wish for a more robust 200m WR. Nitpicking but being so close to perfection makes these small details that bit more annoying.

@@LumePip I'm aware it takes a long time for editing etc. I used to do watch videos myself. I'm personally waiting for the GMT master 2 homage to be released with the Seiko movement from SM with the jubilee bracelet. Pagani do it, but SM strangely have kept thier lower grade Chinese GMT movement in what is one of this most expensive watches. Very strange.

The category is design not originality dude. How can you like Tudor and give this one 0 for design. My god it’s just pure stupidity
@LumePip Жыл бұрын
It’s not pure stupidity though. Actually think about it for a second. The DESIGN category actually did have ORIGINALITY as one of the key things it was judged on, which I don't think San Martin deserved points for given it wasn't them with the original idea. And this was very early on in my thinking about how to aggregate with a scoring system. This video's nearly, like, a year old.
