We had a flying squirrel a raccoon and silver fox for some pets growing up in upstate NY. One day a DEC offer came and wanted to see our wild pets. We showed him and he said since we did not have them tied or restrained in any (meaning the window and front door were opened and were not tied or collared) that was good enough for him. And when time came for them to start families they left. But stopped by once in awhile to show off their family. Sorry for your loss
