Their goal is still to eventually have the entire island of Mindanao be their own independent country. As an example, in my city, they migrate here to build families and increase their population so that they can call for a referendum in the future. Now that they feel empowered they try to destroy the local culture that has thrived for many decades and bend it to their will. In their eyes we Chavacanos will always be in the wrong. We get loud stares from them when we publicly speak our own language and yet when we call them out for the most minor of wrongs they will cry Islamophobia. They want all business establishments to cater to only them and if businesses dont comply these businesses would be publicly reprimanded for being Islamophobic. It's hard to compromise with a group of people that's beset on their ways. They use the "multiculturalism" card only for their benefit and not for all people.

And I must admit that for almost all my adult life, I have never entirely understood the difference between the MNLF and the MILF and the history of their conflicts with the Philippine government. Ethnic and ideological, mostly. Nur Misuari of the MNLF was Tausug. Many of his close people are allegedly ethnic Tausug. Hashim Salamat of MILF was supported by Maguindanaoans. MILF broke away when MNLF accepted semi-autonomy offer from the Philippine government. MNLF ran ARMM initially. MILF only accepted autonomy relatively recently. Both groups were aided and supported by Libyan Muammar Gaddafi.

The Moros claim of Mindanao as a whole is bogus to the max. They only partially settled the Western Mindanao, while the native Lumads settled on the inland, and Visayans were already native to the island since early middle age on the eastern Mindanao. The Moros also a historically marauding people with piracy as their main income resources even before the Christianization of Philippines. Ancient Tagalog, Visayan Hindus, Buddhists, and Lumad folklores all talk about the muslim Moros (Tausugs, Sulus, Maguindanaoans) as being "villainous" horde due to their many slave raids and aggressive warfares against "infidels". I dont agree whenever Moro independence leaders all are victimizing themselves historically for their so-called cause as they still conduct piracies and clan wars up through present era.

It's been peaceful these past years. Our Muslims are nicer. A lot of them are peaceful and reasonable. I've met some of them who do not practice strictly. Some of them in the big cities report extremists hiding within their ranks. They do not kill apostates. They allow children, including girls, to get proper education. It gets bad when the extremists get support from outside Muslim extremists. Hopefully, things continue to improve.

It's not all cash. According to the video, only 100,000 is given as cash. That's barely enough for a family's survival for a year in the provinces. The rest are in things like livelihood, housing and educational assistance. The government is having trouble with housing because of multiple claimants in some properties. That support seems reasonable especially if people follow the agreements.. These people cannot transition without such support.

Foreigners commenting here without knowing why there is a conflict anyway. It's not about Mohammad or Jesus, it's about ethnicity, the land, and history. Sure, religion can play a role, and there are islamic terrorists (e.g. Maute group), but it's not central to the root of the conflict. It would still exist if the Moros were, say, Hindu

I agree. These Muslim tribes are even fighting against each other. Even family members have a tough time co-existing for peace. The government is serious about ending this war but it’s the tribes having issues with each other trying to get more from the government. One more issue is a foreign country is supplying weapons and ammo to these rebels to fight the Philippine government. 1 incident to question the gains made under the peace agreement? There are various armed organizations there and we only have 1 incident in almost a decade of signing. This is way better than the previous situation. Basilan was a hotspot for kidnapping, extortion and murder. Various criminals and terrorists roamed freely there. 1 incident is a blessing. MNLF was given authority to manage the ARMM decades back. The leader treated it like its fiefdom. There was no improvement in the lives of the Moro citizens. The leader, like other Muslim separatist leaders worldwide, had a huge entourage and stayed in five star hotels. He hobnobbed with the rich and famous. Moros remained one of the poorest demographics in the Philippines despite autonomy. Muslims who went to peaceful areas in Luzon and Visayas were able to lead peaceful, comfortable lives. I see them everywhere. The BARMM was the most peaceful I've seen it in decades. It is also true that some Moro communties hide criminals and terrorists among themselves. These criminals hide among relatives and friends. The Philippine Army knows that once it seeks permission from MILF commanders in those areas, the criminals will be tipped off. That was the basis for the covert operation launched against Marwan. It wouldn't have achieved the objective if it was coursed through MILF commanders. The Muslim community there and MILF members were complicit in hiding him. That's the reason why he was able to remain hidden for years. That's also the reason why the Maute terrorists were able to take Marawi. Local Muslim leaders helped them. These various liberation fronts used to fight among themselves. It does not really seem to be for Moro liberation but a way for the warlords to keep control of these areas and their citizens. Mindanao is also the last frontier for the communist New People's Army. The economic developments of Luzon and Visayas has rendered it obsolete. It is only in Mindanao that it can continue to brainwash ignorant, vulnerable people. Some interest groups have vested interests in making ARMM the way it is. The BARMM has a huge potential for development. Once development sets in, warlords and traditional dynasties will lose influence and power. Ordinary Filipinos will probably visit BARMM areas once they feel its safe to do so. Bulk of Philippine tourism comes from locals. It seems encouraging to see that the decommissioned fighter and the BARMM leader are still optimistic and have already seen personal and community success. Once that former fighter's daughter, who already got her license, finds government work, there is no going back. She will be able to help her sisters finish their own studies and the burden on the father is lessened. Those successes wouldn't have been possible without peace. I am also glad that the BARMM leader graciously credited the various parties including government, MILF, members, NGO and Filipinos for trying to make things work.

You need to know that Mindanao is always comprises of three demographics: Christian Bisaya (animistic tatoo bisaya from northern mindanao who got baptized by christian spanish missionaries), Lumad (non-christian natives who refuse to be baptized by spaniards and preserved their indigenious beliefs) and lastly Muslims from Maranao, sulu and Maguindanao who remain independent until the american occupation. Christians and Lumads in Mindanao are also natives of Mindanao and stop spreading false theory that Muslims owns Mindanao. it is just its power and influence of Muslim leaders faded which the Bisaya of Northern Mindanao pays tribute to the Maranaos during precolonial but we see a reversal as those bisaya are becoming the powerful and influential but in Lanao, Maguindanao and sulu is still under the influence of Muslim leaders as it had been before, development on those areas hindered due to local politicians regardless of Religion.

During my travels from Dipolog to South Cotabato, I observed that despite receiving substantial funds from the National Government and international donations, particularly from the Middle East, the BARMM has shown no significant improvement or progress. Instead, it appears that only the politicians are getting richer and richer. They tend to encourage their people to blame the national government for the lack of support while they themselves live comfortably inside their mansions.

In every religion there's a dark side. I can clearly say that when Spain brought Christianity to Philippines there are alot of wrongdoings. However our Lord bless us with our brains to think, to differentiate between good and bad. I can't say anything about Islam because first and foremost I'm not a Muslim and all I can say to our Muslim brothers to widen understanding, there's more to life, living in peace and harmony among communities where children safely can go to school, play around and achieve their dreams. As an adult or a parent it is our responsibility to provide our children with a safe environment.

@klewank2615 where are you from? I may not agree that the IP groups in mindanao are nearly extinct. Every fiesta, there are always IP groups that are represented. It is known. Even in every major city and municipality or province, IP groups have a representative in politics in the LGU sector. And to tell you, they are now very educated too and wear a regular clothes (not their traditional clothes). BARMM area, there are still IP groups that are present too. BARMM area, as what I recall, the place where a lot of IP groups were affected. What usually happened is IP groups (non-Moro IP groups and Moro IP groups) were trapped by family feuds (rido) and political conflict, causing death and land take-over.... this may not be the case in every part of mindanao since IP groups are well respected and recognized now compared before, but it is known that BARMM govt is taking actions on this matter especially in the coming election... people seem to forget, that these extremist groups came from moro tribes that wanted liberty from the PH govt. But, it's really a different case now, all of these groups are one BARMM govt and it is at peace with the PH govt.

Thank-you for a very good overview and handling of a very delicate subject. I gained great respect for the players who work/worked for peace. I like gaining knowledge of regions before travelling. My Father was tortured, starved next to death in Germany as a POW. I can relate to intergenerational trauma having developed Post Traumatic Stress Disorder as did my siblings which is common among POW children.. Thank-you Peacemakers for taking care of the children. I will be visiting Mindanao latter this year and I am looking forward to meeting all the great people from Mindanao. Peace, Love and Kindness. Shout out to Tawi Tawi!

The big problem in Mindanao is that the arrogant Spanish Government during their colonial stint in the Luzon and Visayas tried to extend their control in Mindanao. In that case, different tribes of Mindanao not just the Muslims but also some Lumads fought against the Spaniards. In truth, The Mindanaoans never surrendered and never ceded to the Spanish Government. In short, The Manila Government, Under the rulership of Spain has no right to claim that Mindanao is under their control. When the Americans arrived and defeated the Spaniards, the story will be the same. The Mindanaoans never gave in or never ceded into the American Government. When the new republic has been declared under the first Philippine President Emilio Aguinaldo was declared, it was not even honored by the Muslims and other tribes of Mindanao. In fact, until now, Many muslims could not accept that the Bangsamoro or the Muslim land of Mindanao is under the government of Manila. I myself, a mindanaoan, who finished a college degree and did undergo the subject of History of Muslims and Lumads of the Philippines. I graduated 2004 at Mindanao State University, Main Campus, Marawi City, Lanao Del Sur, Mindanao, Philippines, I can testify to all of this as a proud Mindanaoan. The solution of the Philippine here is contrary to LKY strategy. In SG design, Muslims must not live and converge in one place and therefore they should live side by side with Indians and Chinese families in every community. The logic there is that they could check each others frequently so that one group may not able to devise anything that could harm the other groups that belongs to different ethnicity and the result is peace and harmony. You forgot to mention that during 1910s, Mindanao was 98% Muslim but when American regime started recruiting settler colonists from Luzon and Visayas the population drop to 70% Muslim and this settler colonialism continued until Philippine Independence from the US which made the Muslim population drop to the lowest of 20%.

After the conquest of Mindanao by American regime, they established Moro Province which lasted 1903-1914 and it includes undivided provinces of Cotabato, Davao, Zamboanga, Lanao and Sulu Archipelago. After the dissolution of the province, Christian settler colonialists started settling in small numbers then continued since then.

this have never been told in mainstream media, did you know in most national departments in Mindanao was occupied by muslims? Did they told you that most muslims are businessman, politicians, nurses, teachers, polices and even part of Armed forces of the Philippines? Did you know that during Marawi siege that there are muslim personnel in Philippine Army who were part to quell the rebellion? This documentary never fully mention half of the story but only small portion. If there are least heard in Mindanao, it will be the lumads whom until today haven't heard their plea that the government must protect their ancestral lands from land developers. It's time for the Philippine government to focus on lumads. they are the most helpless.

For example, the Igorot people of northern luzon, they were never colonized by the spaniards and they fought the Japanese, but they easily intergrated and they are very peaceful people right now despite their headhunting, they are one of the most peaceful filipinos and their culture is pure Austronesian. And they welcomed the Muslim Maranao people, now these muslims are everywhere in Cordillera, but the Igorots does not discriminate them or as they are or treat them as an outsider.

To be fair, na-maintan yung peace sa halos isang dekada maliban sa dalawang insidente. Hinihintay pa rin nila yung ipinangako ng gobyerno. Naiintidihan ko din kung bakit ayaw pa bumitaw ng armas ng iba. Hindi pa sila kasama sa batch ng returnees. Proteksyon din nila yung armas laban sa mga personal na kaaway, kalabang political at iba pa. May sagupaan ang MNLF at MILF dati. Tapos andyan pa Maute at Abu Sayyaf.
