The "romanticization" of Pirates apparently has a pretty complicated history, rather than just being "Time numbed the terrors". I... don't know the *full* story, but apparently the original Peter Pan's Captain Hook played a major role in that mess, and various other fairytales and children's stories followed suit, kind of... respecting and admiring the "freedom" aspects of pirates, being not exactly tied to any particular nation or flag aside from their own. (There also were some pretty badass pirates out there!) No rules but your own out beyond the borders of nations! Yo ho ho... ... In today's politics, the anarchy of piracy, plus the obvious nods to *internet* piracy... well, you can see why they've gotten ever more popular in the recent years.
@Kristina-qp1dl2 жыл бұрын
It's pretty interesting! Since you mention Captain Hook: I've got some semi-related/additional context on some of the history of pirates in children's literature. Robinson Crusoe (1719) started the castaway novel obsession, and then early and mid 1800s there was a boom in children's literature and a lot of the stuff aimed towards boys were adventure novels following in the same vein (and school novels but those are less interesting). One of the biggest adventure novels of the time was R. M. Ballantyne's Coral Island (1858) (which was later parodied through Lord of the Flies), which had 3 boys getting stranded on an island, very paradise and Garden of Eden-like, fending off pirates, playing the good old white Christian saviors to the savage natives (one of many classic problematic tropes of the time period), etc. Part of this was to push the whole "Whoo! Colonialism! Adventure! Britain is the best!" schtick. There were a lot of copycat books but many of them weren't so enduring (and Coral Island itself isn't /too/ well known anymore outside of people familiar with the background of Lord of the Flies and people studying children's literature). So a lot of times in boys' adventure novels: pirates were fairly cardboard (usually non-British), vicious villains to outsmart, fend off, and escape. Since kids were often getting the better of them in these novels, I imagine that it probably helped downplay things a wee bit. And then there was pushback as the century went on because the boys' adventure novel obsession also led to families fearing that future generations would neglect the domestic sphere and would run off and never return home, so other adventure/pirate novels like Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island (1883) made attempts to try to discourage that romanticization: yes, adventure, pirates, treasure, all fun stuff, but the novel focuses less on the "Yay freedom and adventure" and more "Look at all the hardwork, misery, manipulative people, and terrifying things you'd have to deal with on these seafaring adventures away from home" by having Jim being miserable with all of the hard labor they make him do on the ship, Jim eventually noticing Silver's manipulation of other boys and realizing that he wasn't the only one he fed honeyed words to, and Jim also facing potential death at various points and only escaping it by sheer luck and no skill of his own. Hilariously, on the subject of Peter Pan, if you read the original Peter and Wendy book, there's also an implication that Peter is just as messed up, if not more messed up than Hook. There's a part in the book where it talks about Peter "thinning out the Lost Boys" when they get too old, implying that he may or may not kill them.
