I was part of a team of prisoners who volunteered to go to hart island to bury the poor in 1984 , it was quite an experience because there were boxes marked with body parts, like arms and legs , boxes marked , child under the age of 3 , boxes marked, fetuses ,,,,,, every once in a while a big box would come over leaking some kind of green fluid from it and this box needed to be removed by a machine and placed in a special hole, I asked what was in it and was told it's all kinds of organs in smaller bags thrown into one big box ,,,,,,, I'm in my 60s now but will never forget my time on hart island as part of the burial detail , and the way things are looking for me , I'm going to end up getting a paupers ending , only where I live now they cremate the poor , makes me think why don't NYC do the same thing , cremation is a far better way to dispose of us poor once we pass on , certainly more dignified in the 21st century . Anyway ,,,, thanks for sharing this video with us all it certainly brought back memories .

The Dark side of New York. Away from all the glamour and awe. A city of 8 million people, the lonliest place in New York with a population of 1 million. 1 million dead. A mini city North of the Big Apple. A City of the dead. It's depressing how so many people died alone. That's one of my greatest fears.

I think it’s a good use of the land. Would it be better to have cremated all these people and put their ashes in a landfill? I mean, the deceased have to go somewhere and if someone has no family or can’t afford proper burial where are they supposed to go?

Why is it sad that New York has enough respect to bury people in coffins on the only land they have open ? Stop viewing these body’s As the spirit that was living in them, once we are gone that’s it. The only thing that upsets me is how bad record keeping was for decades and that people can’t visit found loved ones on a regular/ easy bases.

Video title is misleading since there’s *always* been a way to visit the island -- and even more now, since in 2019 it became part of the New York City Parks & Rec Department (previous to that, when it was under the Department of Corrections despite no longer being a prison, you could visit with reservations). But thanks for the 'spooky' attractant headline used by clickbait.
